Jay did exactly the right thing here, even it was personally embarrassing.

Yes, involuntarily having an epiphany about her own motivation was exactly the right thing to do. And it was even beneficial, unlike when Wiley Coyote looks down and then starts falling.

She does make an initial choice verbally that she want to be friends after being called out on pretending in the past, but she's already made that choice in this arc, just not said it specifically to Grace (who is uncharacteristically slow to pick up the cues).

And she is friends enough to ask for a favor from Hope, who takes her rhetorical request at face value and offers to do so, but to her credit asks, "Do you really want that?"

This seems entirely realistic. People are a hot mess, and progress toward mental health is not a straight path. Two steps forward and three back and forth sideways before the next step forward seems a bit better than par, especially considering the degree of trauma she experienced and how young.

Commentary:

"I enjoy when the answer to weird questions can be yes."    " I tend to enjoy when the answer is yes."

What is the name of the band who had artsy LP covers featuring winged wooden ships flying and floating land masses?

The only member of the main cast that has age comparable trauma is Susan.  Of course, Susan's magic related trauma came later in her life, but still seems to be a major thing with her.  See “Not for Ashley” party, where she and Nanase have a mutual break down over Paris.

If Jay is being fully honest and if Grace believes her, forgiveness and a super glue level bond is soon to follow.

That seems to be a given.

Does Jay know anything about the Nest or Damien?

Not that we've seen, and it doesn't seem that she would have met the 'need to know' criteria, which seems to be a factor in everything she does know. If Arthur thought knowing Grace would be beneficial to Jay, seems that she would know of Grace to the degree that she knew of Tedd, but Arthur may have judged the circumstances too dissimilar or may have judged Grace's secret to be more of a secret. Spilling the beans about Tedd did not divulge 'magic exists' to Jay, who already knew in a partial sense (seems necessary), but spilling the beans about Grace would have spilled many beans she does not yet know and some she probably does not know; aliens exist among the humans, hybrids exist, Grace is such a hybrid, out of control hybridization was carried on, Grace is essentially a super weapon (albeit a very nice one).

Grace's secret is more than “magic exists” but “aliens exists”, the masquerade of which hasn't been broken just yet.  Granted, Grace did tell Ashley, and wants to tell others, but so far, she hasn't.  And so far, all Grace has said is that she wants to talk about “magic” with a friend, nothing about aliens.

Was that not clear? Arthur would have also weighed how all of that would have impacted his granddaughter; I'm thinking TMI. And 'does not meet the need to know criteria'. She did need to know about her magic, so as to not be a loose cannon, and also for her (relative) mental health.

Well, there is finding “magic” that she couldn't copy.  Granted, Edward has said there are spells that can't be copied by wizards, but she didn't know that re Grace transforming.  If she asked about that, it might lead to some awkward conversations which may or may not lead to Arthur thinking she needed to know there was more than one kind of magic, human and, ah, other.

Hmm. That is possible. It is also possible that she didn't trust him enough to tell him. It is also possible that even if she did, he might have thought, insufficient need to know, especially since she is over ten years past the traumatic event.

I suspect it will come out soon.

At some point, she has to tell Grace and Sam that she's Smoke.  Well, maybe not Sam.
