Illusions and dreams are shattered every day.  But when the dream is all you have,  losing it can be worse than losing something you actually held at some point.

This will be a Tedd*Elliot plot, but it could be more in line with canon if Prince Elliot choses Ashley, but Cinder-Tedd gets to meet Grace and everyone lives happily ever after.

That would be an interesting twist if the fairy godmother attends.

Reviewing the comic, I just noticed that Voltaire grew spikes out of his neck in the last panel. Channeling his dragon nature, I think?

Curly hair might be more appropriate, because he's just a dick.
