Today is the 1st Sunday in Advent. Light one of the blue/purple candles. Leave the rest of them alone. Say a short prayer or read a short passage from the Bible.

It's not even close to Christmas time.

It’s closer to Christmas than the beginning of Lent is to Easter.

True,  Advent is only ~25 days while Lent is 40.  While you do see “Easter” stuff for sale before Easter, during Lent, it's not the massive commercial juggernaut that Christmas is.

A few centuries ago, Advent began with Martinmas, the feast of St Martin, November 11.  Much closer to Lent's length. 

And while we're on the subject, neither the old style Advent nor Lent is exactly 40 days. 

A lot of numbers in religion are "close enough".  The current Pope earned his undergraduate degree in Mathematics.  Maybe it will make a difference?
