  1. Story Friday May 4, 2018

... damn they did ... I feel old ... It's not (only) about being spoiled ; truth is that the same movie looks worse when upscaled on modern TV than when shown on old one. I still hope IMAX and similar technologies will help at least little and stops this trend of making TVs wider and wider. And I would really like if, instead of cutting part of image, someone would ADD image to fill those black bars. In lot of cases it would be possible to do mostly automatically, even if the movie wasn't originally shot on widerscreen cameras or if the negatives got lost. Although maybe not in DBZ. Also, even if partially automatic, it would probably be too much work for most movies. However, there is another thing which needs to die even quicker: interlacing. Some TV shows are done so instead of having 25-30 frames per second, they have 50-60 half-frames. Maybe it really was necessary in past, but 1080i shouldn't ever happen.

It didn't used to be this way, but yes, recent development, despite the hints that even in Magus's world it may be more general assumption than truth, does get close to that ... and, unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any girl around who could arrive, save day and prove to magus that girls are stronger. Unless Ellen herself got overpowered more than we expect.

My first take was that the smallest of the catgirls was actually transformed DOG. Yes, dog transformed to catgirl. But I suppose child could get into play this fast ... or, possibly, was already pretending to be dog (I heard kids do stuff like that sometimes) when transformed. Yes, dog. That position looks much more like dog to me than cat, although I'm not exactly sure why. According to original myth, Pandora's Jar was WORSE than any bomb. And presumably Kitty is much more careful when actually in canon.
  4. Story Friday May 4, 2018

I'm not sure how that's related to "CGI isn't just CGI" but I definitely agree. Some cartoons are BETTER. Oh, wait, you said "cheaply animated" so you already recognized that. I suspect Hollywood is blinded by fact that CGI monster is not negotiating for pay raise. Yet. They just don't make them like that anymore. I think there still are people like this. Problem is, they don't get the funding they would require because someone else will do it for less and claims it's just as good (which isn't true of course).
  5. Story Wednesday May 9, 2018

It's been a week since he's realized that he can't fight well while flying, even if he did start training with Greg again, 1 or 2 classes likely wouldn't be enough, but there's no indication that he's done so. Yes, there wasn't enough time for him to get better yet, but there WAS enough time of him starting some training or at least talk about it with others.
  6. Story Friday May 4, 2018

Those are still relatively recent and might look worse later. Or, maybe we reached point where the quality of CGI is good enough ... ... but I doubt it. For one, read all the reviews about Hobbit being shot in 48fps and how bad idea it was. IT WASN'T. There are just two possibilities: either it was shot incorrectly because the producers are not used to 48fps, or the viewers are not used to 48fps. Either will change with time. I'm not sure if 3D will stick or where the resolution will stop, but we already know what gamers thinks about games with less than 60fps. And any movie shot with less than half of that fps, less than quarter of "ideal" resolution, any which is 4:3 if the 2:1 will stuck ... will need to be either "remastered" or be completely remade eventually. See how they remastered TNG. Most of CGI has lower resolution than the movie it's applied on. On the other hand, it is possible we are getting close to point where it WILL be possible to do "remastering" which will actually enhance fps or resolution of movie mostly automatically. That might work. Along with movies where the CGI scenes are supposed to happen inside computer or something, there will be cases where unnatural and artificial is ok. Not for majority of movies, though.
  7. http://www.egscomics.com/index.php?id=2495 Yeah. The golem must be destroyed. Definitely no sympathy. Also, Mantle of Heka proved he didn't get the job just because he has connections. Although I don't believe he send the golem flying over ocean. For one, I suspect that the necessary speed would be over orbital speed ... wait ... EDIT: No. Apparently it's rocket science and can't be verified by few minutes of googling. But maybe not. It's "just" quarter of earth circumference away. For two, I suspect the necessary speed would melt the golem. For third, it would be BIG luck to hit land with such trajectory. Comparison with Juggernaut is not fair. First, it wasn't THAT far. Second, he's unstoppable - I mean, can't be destroyed. Also, ancient Uryumocco confirmed.
  8. Story, Monday May 7, 2018

Other questions here. I especially like biology and extra credit. May 4th's comic showed that there were at least 2 Uryuoms among the golems, they both had ponytails but yeah, no antenna. The "leader" might be the Uryuom on left of May 4th comic, which only highlights the problem of missing antennae ... But yes ; we definitely should've discussed this.
  9. Story Wednesday May 9, 2018

I'd like to see Elliot step in. Dan's kind of used him as the Worf of EGS...he gets beaten up or shut down to show how tough someone else is. It wasn't that great with Worf already. And we have better baseline with how powerful Nanase is, I would say. Of course, she's unlikely to appear. He definitely needs to. I really hope he actually will, as so far he didn't shown any attempts ...
  10. Story Friday May 4, 2018

I suppose I haven't really seen a lot of movie remakes (particularly if one were to rule out new adaptations of stories that have been adapted before that aren't trying to remake the old adaptation), so I can't really make a definitive statement on the matter. Also, come to think of it my experience with remakes, reboots, and new adaptations in general is pretty mixed - though I will say that cases I've seen where the newer version is unquestionably superior to the old one(s) are pretty rare, and as such the idea of a new version will replace (as opposed to coexist with) the old one really rubs me the wrong way. I suppose the movies are not here long enough to see how the long term effect will be anyway. It's possible I'm just optimists when I think we eventually get good remakes even in those cases where some remake failure already happened. However, new versions might replace old ones even if we don't agree with it ... and the idea that "new" viewers will be watching multiple versions just to decide which was better doesn't sound likely. They couldn't be. Noone had computers capable of doing good CGI back then. This MIGHT be nostalgia talking.
  11. Story Friday May 4, 2018

There once was a man named Oedipus Rex you may have heard about his odd complex his name appears in Freud's index because... he loved his mother. Oedipus also killed his father. I don't think Perseus needed to worry about that. And he definitely needed to marry Andromeda (or at least ...) because he found the dynasty and had lot of descendants, including Heracles, who was his half-brother and great-grandson, proving that Zeus doesn't care.
  12. Story Wednesday May 9, 2018

Seems that Magus was ACTUALLY TRAINING fighting when flying, not like Elliot. Well, it's probably mandatory course on his school. Sooo ... Dan is trying to be vague about Magus's and urteronc's power? How long can he be doing that? Pity we don't have Dame Tara here. She would show something more flashy already (And Ashley should totally kick something ELSE than Kevin on urteronc. There are plenty of other crates there, aren't they? ... sure, opening or moving them could awake something even worse ...)
  13. Story Friday May 4, 2018

And most of the time they'll fail to capture what made the original good in the first place, though at least that often has the upside of bringing the older, better movie back into the public consciousness. I don't think it's most of the time, although the cases where it happened are often VERY visible. Like the Clash of the Titans, where the better CGI and better looking Kraken can't save the fact that Hades CHOSEN to get Underworld and not counting the issue with Persephone was satisfied with it, that Kraken was Poseidon's monster, and that Perseus definitely didn't married Io, his great-great-great...grandmother. It's true that 20th century special effects can be better than modern CGI - because they are done physically instead of digitally. Land of the Pharaohs was also be one of the movies which took advantage of cast of thousands of real people, which is something not really possible to replace with digital effects ...
  14. NP Monday May 7, 2018

It would take longer. It was less than 5 months for Rhoda (probably considerably less, as she had multiple spells already), while Kitty probably needed most of those eight months. (Again, that's how I read what Dan said.)
  15. Story Friday May 4, 2018

Christiansborg, the site of our Parliament, lies about a hundred feet from one of our main thoroughfares and still seems to be only tenuously in contact with reality at all. Our Parliament has three blocks of buildings next to each other. The next building in that line belongs to university. Doesn't seem it's helping.
  16. NP Monday May 7, 2018

Are you sure? I actually read this as "it's not just possible, it's certain". Again, she's actually implied to be awakened in that thread. Of course, that's referring to summer, not "present time" of main story.
  17. NP Monday May 7, 2018

I think it wouldn't count like asking her for the purpose of Genie enchantment. Maybe. Definitely lost opportunity. That's extremely likely and might contribute to her not noticing she doesn't have to yet.
  18. NP Monday May 7, 2018

The Genie outfit grants her the ability to transform anyone who asks for it, as discussed here. Which means she can't just transform her, she needs to ask. And she was soo looking forward to actually transform someone ... well, shouldn't distract her for long. Hmmm ... does Kitty NEED to gesture this much? If not, did she already noticed or did she not tried yet?
  19. Story Friday May 4, 2018

"In Europe, 100 miles is a long way. In US, 100 years is long time." And yes, it's about the mental distance. There are governments which fail to be in contact with people living just few miles away. The Old Hack will probably confirm that, based on his previous comments I suppose California had similar problem when being ruled by T-800 terminator.
  20. Story, Monday May 7, 2018

The golem may remember what happened ages ago, but the amount of damage might have affected it's logic and make it believe that it needs to finish what it's creators started, or maybe it does have a will of it's own now and and is pissed off about getting blasted by Heka. Maybe it developed a superiority complex. I would say it's definitely pissed off, and the question is if capability to get pissed off is part of his programming or bug. Even Japan and the rest of the world, they thought that conquering the world required an iron fist and military prowess, when all they really needed was a firm grasp on technology and business, and Anime. Japan and (south) Korea don't like each other, does they? And seems that they are competing in that conquering the world by technology now ... on the other hand, on the anime front, Japan won. Some even say that anime by definition can only be made in Japan ... flawless victory. YES. Given that Dan's commentary states that modern Uryuoms wouldn't understand the ancient language, it's at least like comparing modern English and Old English (like what the original poem of Beowulf was written in) as modern English speakers can understand Shakespearean English(also known as Early Modern English), albeit with some difficulty. I agree that it's what Dan SAID. However, by making the "Algolem" he undermined that position. There is also the additional point of Uryuom generally learning language in few seconds. How well this knowledge work? We can assume Elliot wouldn't be able to understand the golem, would he be able to realize he's speaking in ancient Uryuom? And if we wouldn't, would someone else we know have better chance recognizing it? Yes, but the golem has been inoperable for all that time, with it's systems and functionality being actively suppressed. Any internal chronometer likely wasn't running either, so while the golem can obviously tell it's not at the library any more, it most certainly doesn't know how much time has passed. That's likely true and proves that the ones building it underestimated the importance of internal chronometer. They should make it more resistant to suppression. Why don't humans like humans? One hundred words or fewer, please. Because, being humans, they KNOW humans.
  21. Story, Monday May 7, 2018

Yeah, but comparing it to modern Uryumocco would probably be like comparing Common English to Latin, though Latin of course isn't long forgotten but it's very niche in it's usage today. So far it actually seem like comparing current English to Shakespeare one. Or look at Germany and France. Who would say how close friends they would be later considering their relationship during second world war. That's why the most important device on any machine is internal chronometer. Any war machine should suppose that no order is valid for more than 100 years and if more than 1000 years passed, it's certainly museum exhibit now.
  22. Story Friday May 4, 2018

I can assure you that I don't know anything about Richard III - either the real one or Shakespeare one. Also, as far as I know, Shakespeare didn't made any movies. Unless he borrowed Leonardo da Vinci's Camera Obscura to shot them. I suppose you can reach up to one frame per hour with such device and quick painter. That's tricky but probably only way how the movie's influence can last. Which was unpleasant but not exactly long term. (Note: the understatement is supposed to be joke. I'm aware that lot of people would use stronger words, on the other hand, they will definitely agree it wasn't pleasant.)
  23. Story Friday May 4, 2018

Yes. Hollywood History will lead a blitzkrieg, conquer almost whole world, fails to secure it's supply lines and few decades later capitulates. Jurassic Park is less than 25 years old and people already accepted that dinosaurs should have feathers. They even acknowledged their dinosaur are not historically accurate in sequel - ON SCREEN. Movies don't last. Even if the topic stays interesting and doesn't get outdated, the special effects certainly will, and so will the quality of material it was filmed at. Hollywood will make new version of the movie, with new stars and new effects, and it can use that opportunity to fix mistakes made in original movie, especially if people who knew better was making fun of the movie on social media.
  24. Story Friday May 4, 2018

First, either they missed someone or building pyramids is really easy, because there are so many of them. Second, records sealed into the tomb totally counts. In fact, even the destroyed ones counts, although it's hard to count them. Wait: maybe the signature that the stone block was put on proper place was ON that stone block. The inside face of it, of course. Meaning the person responsible for putting in the final stone needed to sign it from inside and then stay there. (Later, the requirement of being on inside face was relaxed, but the signature was still there)
  25. Story Friday May 4, 2018

Hmmm ... how big the paper trail was for pyramids? Papyrus trail, I mean.
