  1. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Justifiable vigilance is not a bad thing. I'm watching what I'm taking, and I'm staying true to my word. No increase before Monday, if an increase is warranted. Well, I was using my ear (which my primary care doctor thinks is developing a basal cell carcinoma and is painful to the touch, even by a pillow) as the #1 test, since it was the easiest item to judge if I was getting relief. It's been interfering with my sleep, especially getting to sleep. As it turns out, my back and my foot are valid indicators as well. Getting up, walking, bending, other daily movements—they all hurt. I just thought it would be easier to zero in on one item rather than have 14 or 15 indicators. Doesn't look that way now. OIC isn't a problem anymore, at least. (Anyone else, don't make me explain the acronym.)

  3. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

I think Mrs. Prof is bringing Dumbass B home tonight. He'll probably bolt the second the trap is opened, so don't expect any photos. She spent some time at a volunteer meeting last night trying to hone her camera skills. We've got an old Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd digital camera (looks like an old SLR) that she uses instead of her phone camera. Still works great, even though the instructions have "Designed for Microsoft Windows XP" on the front page. Normally, she lets the camera fly on autopilot for cat pictures through cages and behind the glass. She decided to start learning how to fly it on her own last night. Said the auto settings came out better than her manual ones. I assured her that it'll just take a lot of practice, which is a LOT less expensive now that film isn't an issue. (You should have seen some of my experiments with an old Pentax K1000.)
  4. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

5:59 p.m. 20170811. Lots of entries in the chronicle today. The five hours on the left side didn't cut it for me. I switched back to the right side and took a long nap. I don't know what time I laid down, but I woke up around an hour ago. Overslept my pain medicine dose by a couple of hours. I'm going to have to extend my last dose of the day to make up for it, so that I don't overdose. Even though I overslept, it wasn't restful. My right ear especially hurts, and of course my back is sore. Damn this ear. It's going to force me to see another doctor.
  5. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

8:28 a.m. CDT 20170811. One thing I haven't noted during all of this is the effect of the Cymbalta, the drug that began this thread. That's because there hasn't been any effect that I can tell. What am I supposed to be watching for? There hasn't been any additional pain reduction or depression reduction. Maybe some extra sleepiness. Oh yeah, sleep. I fell asleep between midnight and one, then woke up around three. Stayed up for another hour, then slept until seven. I think that's about five hours. Mrs. Prof wasn't up yet.
  6. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

Well, whatever it was, I calmed Loudmouth down with a good ten-minute-long nuzzling session (him doing the nuzzling, not me). Mrs. Prof and I agree: Loudmouth's probably the equivalent of an old geezer—like me—and, like me, he can't stand this darned kid chasing him around on the lawn.
  7. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

Why the hell does Baker charge down the hall, chasing Loudmouth? Is it dominance? Play? Wanting to do damage to another cat that has entered his domain? I don't get it.
  8. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

... aaaand Baker has found his food! Of course, Loudmouth has been eating his own for some while now. Gravy first, then meat. Who thought of that idea for cat food? Where do cats get gravy in nature?
  9. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

This morning, Mrs. Prof put Baker's food back where it had been before Loudmouth came in. We didn't see any real reason to keep it there, because feeding time had become so tense. Plus, it was dangerous, because we had to step over his tail when he was eating. That would freak him out further. Now, Baker hasn't eaten. Loudmouth has, but Baker hasn't. He's played with his mouth, chased Loudmouth, done just about everything else, and is presently lounging across the hall from where his food had been. But he isn't eating his food. I say give him the day to find it and eat it. And NO TREATS.
  10. Story Friday August 11, 2017

f!Tedd has the closest thing she's ever had to a mother, and that mother is worried about hurting her. Strong foreshadowing.
  11. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

12:01 a.m. CDT 20170811. T minus one week, 12 hours and 19 minutes and counting until my pain management procedure. I'm still not 100% sure of what'll be happening, but I expect a full explanation on the day of the procedure. I just hope it's one where I don't have to be awake during it, because the doctor mentioned "an hour or two" as the time span. I don't think I could remain sane for that long with medical equipment inside me while conscious. The pain medication isn't helping yet. My ear is scary looking and still hurts. I think I'm going to sleep on my left side tonight, something I hardly ever do. Then again, my left toe and foot are throbbing from the pain of the break, so I'll have to deal with that. In short, The 45mg dose has until Monday to kick in before I bump it up to 50mg. Going to try and get more than 5 hours of sleep tonight. How I'll do it is anyone's guess.
  12. What Are You Ingesting?

Ohmydearlord. HoWe Nuremberg Bratwurst breakfast links. Good lord. American sausage links have nothing on this stuff! Do yourself a favor and order it!!! Just make sure you don't cook it too fast, and that you add a few drops of oil to keep it from sticking to the pan. Don't even need a knife to eat it if you cook it right.
  13. Things That Make You Happy

This is more interesting than happy making. I got a postcard with the following on the back: If you own copyrights in musical compositions that Spotify made available for interactive streaming and/or limited downloading, you could get benefits from a class action settlement. It goes on to say I've received the postcard because I've been identified as a potential owner of a registered copyright in "one or more musical compositions," and says Spotify made them available without a license. It then re-directs me to a web site, which explains the class action and says the claim form will be available sometime in December. If I file, I get a share of the pie plus future royalties. I'm guessing that this is for Grabbag, the theme song I wrote for Duke Nukem 3D. I hold full filed copyright on that sucker.
  14. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

6:35 a.m. 20170810. I slept for about five hours with the extra hydrocodone. I don't know if it made a difference, though, because when I woke up, I was on my back and not resting on my ear. The ear is still sore to the touch. I gave Mrs. Prof my plan for testing the dose, using the ear pain as the margin against which the dosage would be tested. Her response? "Always gotta be looking for some reason to increase the dose." I took that as an insult and told her that I had to pick something as a test. I couldn't use 15 or 16 items as tests, now could I? "I don't know," she said. I'm starting to feel like she's always looking for some reason to keep the dosage down, even if it's not working. We are at loggerheads with each other over the issue. It's frustrating. In any case, I took my 15mg dose at 6:00 a.m., with the next doses due at 2:00 p.m. and 10 p.m. CDT. Let's see if the new spread makes a difference.
  15. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

We definitely got the Elavil pill down into Baker last night. I hope it makes a difference. At least Mrs. Prof will be working from home today to help separate the kids, if absolutely necessary. Baker's already up. We should be letting Loudmouth out of the cat room shortly, once Mrs. Prof is up.
  16. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

I think she was going with the "too dumb to find the food in the trap" motif. When she captured him, there was other non-trap food all around the area. This time, he picked the one in the trap.
  17. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Mrs. Prof got the hydrocodone refilled today, for which I am most thankful (and for which I was about to drive her crazy, she said). I've just taken my first 15mg dose. Future doses will be 15mg 3x daily (45mg daily), to be raised to 50 if that doesn't work after 3 days. I have a bellwether against which to measure if its working: my right ear. It's hurting like hell and spotting on my pillow after the cryo treatment I got Monday. I normally sleep on my right side. The hydrocodone's going to have to make that possible again. If not, the dosage goes up.
  18. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

Mrs. Prof FINALLY managed to capture the elusive Dumbass B! He's in the process of being transported to the pet adoption center for tomorrow's TNR surgery sessions. And so ends his baby making days.
  19. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

Both cats settled down eventually. I don't know if that's just their crepuscular behavior or if it's got something related to Baker getting sick. I hope they don't kick back in later on, because Mrs. Prof isn't going to be home until late.
  20. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

We're not sure if we got Baker's pill down inside him last night. Seems like we didn't, because Baker has been stalking Loudmouth all morning long. I've had to get on Baker's case for swatting at Loudmouth once already. I can't track them like this all day. I hope they tire each other out. Yes, Mrs. Prof is working from her office today. That's how I inherited cat watching duties. I *think* I just calmed Baker down a bit with some treats ... or powered him up. Not sure which.
  21. Things That Are Just Annoying

Is this with the "fresh" or "still" distribution? Report it on bugzilla!
  22. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

Found more bed pee, this time on Loudmouth's mattress. Don't know when it happened, but Mrs. Prof thinks he did it right after she prevented him from making a dash outside. He was pretty pissed at her (hands /me the list). I got him to calm down and slow blink at me. BTW, on the subject of nuzzling, Mrs. Prof says she's never got Loudmouth to nuzzle her. Then again, Baker is really her cat, while Loudmouth is turning out to be mine, affection-wise.
  23. What Are You Ingesting?

You share my wife's opinion of stevia, although I don't know if she finds it bitter. She just doesn't like it. Damn it, though, she's found she can tolerate sucralose, which I'm allergic to. Makes up for her shellfish allergy, which I love. Problem is, shellfish aren't 0 calorie ...
  24. What Are You Ingesting?

Coffee with BariatricEating.com's Inspire High Protein Coffee Creamer (Vanilla Cinnamon flavor). Bit of a sham—on the front, it says "0 calorie natural sweetener." However, on the nutrition facts, it says a serving is 80 calories. I guess just the sweetener (stevia) is 0 calories. Anyway, it's got 8g of protein in a serving, which is worth it for post-bariatric patients like me. The stevia isn't sweet enough, so I toss in a couple packs of Equal to make up for it. Woke up much earlier and had leftover shrimp sushi for breakfast. Bought extra yesterday with that intent.
  25. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

A rare shared picture: Loudmouth (foreground) and Baker (background) sharing a moment on the master bed this morning ... with the waterproof cover on the bed, of course. I have learned that Loudmouth is a nuzzler. Baker never has been—he's an "I *might* let you touch me" cat. Loudmouth seeks out human contact when it's nearby. Baker's jealous as hell over this, of course. P.S.—Baker just barfed his breakfast in the middle of getting treats. Sigh.
