  1. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

10:12 p.m. CDT 20170727. Lots of sleep today, and lots of weird dreams. Still getting the Lyrica coughs. I also feel like I'm making reverse progress in my throat/voice treatment with the magic mouthwash, probably because of the Lyrica. Not as much double vision as yesterday, but I haven't pushed myself as hard. I don't like the fact that I have to sleep in order to keep things stable, but that's the truth of the matter. Oh, and the Lyrica isn't doing its job yet. I'm still getting stone bruise pain from my 2nd and 3rd left metatarsals. Even my big toe hurts like hell, and it was making progress. I still can't wear my left shoe on a regular basis, though, due to the swelling in my foot. My "consultation" appointment with pain management doctor #3 is scheduled for just under a week (Wednesday, August 2nd), and I don't know what he's going to do if I show up as a Lyrica zombie. I hope Mrs. Prof is ready to speak on my behalf. Seriously—I'm scared to death over this.
  2. I need to vent.

I'd like the 10 minute argument, please... OH! Oh! I'm sorry! This is abuse!
  3. Things That Are Just Annoying

Trying to set up an old Insteon webcam to track possible bed peeing by Loudmouth. It dates from the time of the KittenCam, so I couldn't remember the username/password. Pulled the Big Red Switch (i.e., used a straightened paperclip) and reset the thing to the factory settings. I read through the instructions to set up the thing for a wireless connection. It mentioned entering the router password, but it didn't say how to get the thing to connect to the router for the password. Then, at the VERY FREAKING END OF THE INSTRUCTIONS, it says something to the effect of, "you may now remove your ethernet wire." I DON'T HAVE A FREE ETHERNET CONNECTION WIRE YOU IDIOT AAAUUUGGGHHH I've had enough problems with the Win10 Creators Update finally deciding to upgrade my music system today, and two important plugins thinking my system ID has changed so they won't run. AAAUUUGGGHHH. That's not me typing repeated letters, that's what it looks like from my end when I type under the influence of Lyrica.
  4. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

Had a bit of a "back off!" moment a couple of hours ago. Loudmouth was discovering the house, but Baker was trying to discover Loudmouth. They kept near-missing each other until they met, face-to-face, at the hall corner. Loudmouth had had enough. He went into full growl mode, and eventually opened up his mouth and gave him a warning "tiger growl." Baker backed off really quickly and left Loudmouth alone after that little encounter. It's pretty clear that Loudmouth is willing to coexist with Baker. He's just not willing to be "best buds" yet. Baker pushed the boundary too far this morning, and he got told to back off, which he did. Neither cat wanted to kill the other cat: it was more of a, "Hey! Get out of my face/rear end!" move by Loudmouth, and Baker honored it. Could be much worse.
  5. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

9:28 a.m. CDT 20170727. Woke up around 6am or so and took my pain medicine. Took the rest of my medicines—including the Lyrica—after getting a cup of applesauce into me. I'm already feeling the discombobulation and the double vision. Just had an argument with Mrs. Prof about whether or not I should call the podiatrist and ask him to get off of the Lyrica. She said I'd "done the research" and determined that it was going to take two weeks for my body to catch up. I reminded her that she treated me like a drunken zombie when I tried to show her a spreadsheet the other night. In the end, it was decided that I'm going to stay on the Lyrica, and that she's just going to have to put up with me having problems with it. Right now, my head's telling me two things: one, that I'm tired, and two, that I need to work on internet stuff. Not sure which choice I'll follow. Probably one.
  6. What Are You Ingesting?

Sam's Club salad: spinach, feta, almonds, strawberries, blueberries, and pear vinaigrette. With thinly sliced smoked goose breast. Not even the wonderfulness of smoked goose breast can overcome the meh-ness of a Sam's Club salad.
  7. I need to vent.

It's quite all right. It's the internet. It's a chat room. It's a webcomic. And finally, it's in an unmoderated environment. Stuff like this is bound to happen.
  8. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

2:38 a.m. CDT 20170727. I stayed up until 5am typing something rather complex for Scribophile after last night's 2:40 a.m. report. I then went back through it and started capitalizing a word that starts with R. I hit Shift-R after Shift-R, over and over, until my finger slipped and I hit Ctrl-R. Guess what that does in Firefox? Reloads your page. I lost a whole project thanks to one little finger slip. At that point I decided to go to sleep. I woke up at 2:00 p.m., wondering where everything was and why Loudmouth was out. I counted the time between as a "missed dose" and did not take any of my morning medicines other than my pain medicine. Guess how much work I got done? I swear, this Lyrica is a productivity killer. I went ahead and took the evening dose tonight, and I'll take the remainder of my doses until either my next doctor's appointment or until Mrs. Prof forces me to stop taking it.
  9. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

He's going to the vet, probably Thursday. The wetting issue has continued unabated. He's not even using his litter boxes for anything but poop now. Mrs. Prof found a waterproof beach blanket at a store. It fits over the whole frigging bed, I swear. It's an interim fix for a problem that needs another solution, and I'm not even sure it'll fix the problem, since he could just move to another bed.. Baker isn't the problem in this case. He used to sleep around Mrs. Prof, but he hasn't done that in ages. Baker's got a window hammock that I don't think he'd share with Loudmouth, but there are several trees that Loudmouth could use if he wanted to elevate himself. Loudmouth was a low-level percher even when he was an outdoor cat. He never got any higher than a planter's table. Mrs. Prof is getting desperate. She's tired of having fresh sheets every night, to use a bit of cruel irony. EDIT: I'm being told that there were three separate spots on the bed where Loudmouth went. I'm also being told that Loudmouth's pee does not have a strong cat urine odor.
  10. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

A nice moment tonight between Baker (left) and Loudmouth (right): ... and within 15 minutes Baker had jumped down, Loudmouth had jumped over to the bed, and peed on it. Mrs. Prof caught him in the act, so he knew he was doing something wrong. We have a chronic Loudmouth bed pee problem. Extra litter boxes don't help. Different litters don't help. Our last option at the moment is to take him to the vet and see if there is something physically wrong with him.

  12. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

2:40 a.m. CDT 20170726. I'm up because I collapsed at around 10pm last night. I managed to make it through the start of a DVRed show Mrs. Prof wanted to watch, but I couldn't finish it. Gave her the remote and collapsed. This was about an hour after being told that I'm acting stoned—"thinking" that I'm getting stuff done, when in reality I'm not. Also in reality, I'm having a hard as hell time verbally conveying ideas and actions. I'd set up a spreadsheet (so much for #1) and was trying to ask for help on turning it into a database, but couldn't get the idea across (point #2 confirmed). This is all Lyrica-based. I still haven't got used to it yet. I may need to go back on the magic mouthwash. I had trouble swallowing spoonfuls from a bowl of cottage cheese. Felt like I had a lump in the back of my throat that was making it hard to swallow it. No such lump now, but I'll bet it'll come back soon enough.
  13. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

9:14 a.m. CDT 20170725. I'm getting forgetful. Had to go back and insert the time zone in the message header. I'm having trouble remembering the names of things—all I can remember is the letter they start with. Mrs. Prof (or a Doctor, if I'm at an appointment) has to come up with the word for me. Dry mouth. Biotene spray. Enough said. Thanks to the Lyrica, I feel like I'm shuffling around the house like an old man, especially when I don't use my cane. I'm not wearing my shoes, because they hurt too much. I think I've gathered enough data for the podiatrist to let him know that I'm still getting stone bruise/gunshot pain in my left foot. Why torture myself further? Still dealing with the Lyrica-induced cough as well. It starts up about 10-15 minutes after I take it and really lasts for a few hours afterward. I'm just about over it as of this writing. The sleepiness is made worse by the fact that I take lorazepam, I've learned. It's a drug interaction. I'm just gonna have to fight it.
  14. Story Monday July 24, 2017

The owls are not what they seem. ... what, doesn't anyone remember the log lady from Twin Peaks around here?
  15. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Thank you. Doing my best. At odd hours again. No real double vision right now. I was able to fire off a major administrative missive to the Ubergroup team that I Captain on Scribophile. It even made sense and didn't ramble like the typings of a madman. Mrs. Prof is the one who's probably worrying about it, but not telling me. She wants me driving again, and there's no way I'm doing that in my current state.
  16. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

5:49 p.m. CDT 20170724. The struggle to get through the Lyrica has turned into an outright war. I almost feel like it's giving me double vision. My typing speed has dropped dramatically, unless I close my left eye, and I can't type one-eyed for very long. I can think when I'm on the computer, but talk to me and it's like I've gone senile. And all of this is supposed to be over in a week of so. Thank God I don't have to go anywhere important this week. It's next week that I'm worried about, because my consultation with the pain management doctor is next Wednesday afternoon. On top of the vision issues, I'm having fatigue issues. Working at the computer wears me out like crazy. In fact, I'm going to take a nap break in a few minutes.
  17. Things That Are Just Annoying

The circuitry of the USB nib? I think those are universal and cheap, aren't they?
  18. Story Monday July 24, 2017

To her family, direct and extended. To others, not so much.
  19. Story Friday July 21, 2017

Couldn't you have written it in cuneiform on the back of all of those Danish Butter Cookies you make?
  20. What Are You Ingesting?

Yeah, but you've got to cook them to get the maillard reaction, and that takes time to get it just right, and by then the guy's gone ...
  21. What Are You Ingesting?

Bailiff, whack that comment with a large mallard duck.
  22. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

Just had an interesting moment with Baker and Loudmouth. Loudmouth was on top of the bed, letting me give him a tummy rub, while Baker was walking around my feet. Baker then disappeared. Next thing I heard was a fabric scratching noise coming from the other side of the bed. Loudmouth started growling, even while I was petting him. I went over to the other side, expecting to see Baker, but he'd ducked under the bed. Project: block off the space under the bed so that neither of the cats can get under it. That's a JG tip.
  23. What Are You Ingesting?

Having another smoked goose breast sandwich, this time warmed. Mayo and Muenster cheese again. Warm smoked goose breast rocks! I've always heard that duck fat is king when it comes to frying other things. I hope goose fat is close, because I've never had duck fat.
  24. Loudmouth's Journey Inside

As long as Mrs. Prof doesn't get Loudmouth too hyper by playing, yes. Otherwise, it's barf city.
