April Fools Filler 3/28/20 - Nite Stick and Ms. Rocket
heroesofcrash posted a topic in Heroes Of Crash
http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Looks like Cannon's prank was FOILED this time! It's that time of year again: April Fools' Day! Every year, Cannon likes to prank other webcomic characters, usually behind the scenes. This time, he's decided to prank TWO characters: the title characters of Nite Stick and The Adventures of Ms. Rocket! However, it seems that two pranks may be too many, as his plan may have backfired on him just a bit... Usually, Cannon gets away with his April Fools pranks without any sort of comeuppance, but I suppose he just bit off more than he could chew. While Nite Stick and Ms. Rocket take center stage in this filler, I couldn't resist giving a subtle shout-out to two other comics from the Collective of Heroes: Shane Rivett's Heroes of the World and Beyond (Or "HOTWAB") and Corey Kramer's Wonder Weenies! As this comic is non-canonical and happens "behind the scenes" of making a webcomic, the first panel contains a sign pointing to the HOTWAB set in the background, right next to the sign for the Collective of Heroes Webcomic Studios. The building in the final panel has a sign with a Wonder Weenies logo. It was going to be a window, but I forgot to put highlights on the window, so now it's a blue sign. That's what I'm going with. I've had a version of this gag floating in my head for YEARS, only with Belt Boy on a flying invention and smashing into a billboard (But still singing the theme to "The Greatest American Hero" with the tweaked ending). I initially figured I'd have Cannon prank Ms. Rocket, then brought my old gag idea into it while brainstorming, then finally added Nite Stick's staff to kick the comedy up a notch, making it into a twofer prank. It's kinda neat how my joke evolved. Many thanks to Michael VanSlyke and David Fleming for the use of their characters, and a shout out to Shane Rivett and Corey Kramer. You can check out ALL their comics by clicking the Collective of Heroes button at the top of my main page! Don’t forget, I still have my birthday contest going on, and I want to see some fan art for my birthday!-

http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Cannon pranks the cast of Band Vs. Band in our annual April Fool's Day strip! I'm sure a bunch of you were expecting me to get someone from the Collective of Heroes to make a cameo appearance. I definitely want to do that eventually, but I'm still catching up on a lot of their comics. There's only three that I've read fully; two I've already done April Fool's fillers with (Gyno-Star and Grrl Power), and one I have... other plans for...! Besides, Band Vs. Band is a lot of fun, and I've been dying to draw this comic for a while! If you're not familiar with it, Band Vs. Band centers around two rival band leaders: the Candy Hearts' goody-two-shoes Honey Hart, and the Sourballs' crude, vulgar Turpentine. However, their rivalry masks a mutual attraction, turning every "battle of the bands" into a battle with their feelings. With its limited color palette, retro art style, hand-written text, and borderless panels, Band Vs. Band has no shortage of eye candy, but it's the story and characters that you'll truly fall in love with. Check it out through my Links page. Many thanks to Kathleen Jacques for letting me use her characters! Drawing this filler was tricky. To make the joke in the last panel work, I needed to incorporate elements of Kathleen's style into my own, most notably the color palette. The only colors she uses are shades of blue and pink, which contrast with Cannon's green-and-purple ensemble (Normally, he doesn't wear purple pants, but I stretched his wardrobe a bit to help him stand out more). Trying to emulate her lettering and rounded borders was a bit too daunting (especially for all the things I wanted to fit in the panels), so I stuck with my old fonts and borders. But I did color the letters and word balloons like Kathleen does. The final panel is chock-FULL of music-themed gags. Can you spot all of them? I'll give you a minute. (Doo-dee-doo...) Was that enough time? Okay, let's run through all the hidden jokes, starting with the audience. The audience members are modeled after various musicians from fiction (with some tweaks here and there), plus the very real (or rather, SURreal) Weird Al Yankovic (my favorite music artist!). The fictitious artists, going from top left to bottom-right are based on: - Ember McLain (from Danny Phantom) - Chap Lipman (The Beets, from Doug) - Marina (Off the Hook, from Splatoon) - Danny (Love Handel, from Phineas and Ferb) - Manolo Sanchez (from The Book of Life) - Sakura (Franchouchou, from Zombieland Saga) - One of the Aquabats (from The Aquabats Super Show) In addition to the audience members, there's also a bunch of parody posters in the background: - Linus N. Lucy (The title and moustache are a reference to Vince Guaraldi, who wrote my favorite song, Linus and Lucy - better known as the theme song to Peanuts!) - Lease (Parody of the musical "Rent") - Elwood Pretzel (Elvis Presley) - Holly Graham and the Gem Stones (Jem and the Holograms) - Brentalcase (Brentalfloss) - Rosie and the Kittycats (Josie and the Pussycats) - The Fad 4 (The Fab Four, AKA The Beatles) - Linda Silver (Lindsey Sterling, as you may have guessed from the violin) - Stephanie and the Stephanies (Steven and the Stevens from Steven Universe, as the star symbol suggests) - Specter of the Rock Opera (Parody of "Phantom of the Opera", obviously) - She Loves Fabric (Referencing the notion that "She Likes Cloth" would make a good band name from HomestarRunner Dot Com's "Teen Girl Squad Issue 12") Despite this being one of the more detailed strips I've drawn in a long time, I managed to complete it in a surpisingly fast two days; perhaps the lack of colors, action poses, and dramatic camera angles had something to do with it...? Drawing this strip as a form of fan art has been a lot of fun. :-) If you want to get in on the fan art train, why not enter my contest? There's still over a month and a half to go, and ALL valid entries win some art as a prize! Happy drawing... and happy April Fool's Day!

April Fools' 2018 Filler 3/31/18 - "Alvery and Ardrienne"
heroesofcrash posted a topic in Heroes Of Crash
Featuring the cast of "Alvery Nerveaux's Secret Case Files" (used with permission from the author)! TheHeroesOfCRASH.com It's that time of year again...! Every year for April Fool's Day, Cannon pranks someone from another webcomic (Whose characters I use with permission). This time around, the characters are from Alvery Nerveaux's Secret Case Files; the heroic Alvery Nerveaux herself, and the villainous Ardrienne Renelsoir. It's a funny, wacky comic filled with spies, robots, costumes, typewriters, and Weird Al references, and you can check it out through my Links pages, which have recently been updated with LOADS of new webcomics (Nine in the G/PG section, and eight in the PG-13/R section, all of which have been marked)! Drawing other artists' characters in my art style is always fun. :-) It is a bit tricky, though. I didn't want Alvery and Ardrienne to look like the same character with different hairstyles - I was already making them look similar to each other by giving them both opaque glasses. In the comic, Alvery's glasses always hide her eyes, while Ardrienne's are always seen through. I took some artistic license to keep Alvery's eyes hidden and made both characters' glasses opaque (You can blame the lighting in the room). But I digress; I made sure that Alvery and Ardrienne had different noses, face shapes, and body types, taking how they were drawn in the comic and exaggerating them a bit. Alvery has more curves, whereas Ardrienne is thinner. I made sure that for this comic, Ardrienne's body is a bit more angular, harsher, and more streamlined than Alvery's. Anyway, if you enjoyed this comic, then I suggest you do the following: 1. Go to my Links pages and visit Alvery Nerveaux's Secret Case Files, and get archive-binging! 2. When you finish Alvery, check out some of the other new Links I've added! 3. Enter my birthday contest; everyone who submits a proper entry by my birthday gets a prize! Filler 4/1/17 - April Fools 2017 featuring Gyno-Star!
heroesofcrash posted a topic in Heroes Of Crash
theheroesofcrash.com One of my favorite website traditions is the annual April Fools' Day filler. I'm not big on practical jokes, myself... but Cannon sure is, which is why he pranks a character from someone else's webcomic every year! This year's target is the Happy Homemaker - a supervillainess bent on taking away her fellow woman's choice to have a career. Her arch-nemesis is the feminist superheroine Gyno-Star, who appears in the last panel. If you want to read a feminist webcomic whose wit and flawed heroes are reminiscent of one of the GOOD seasons of The Simpsons, then check out The Adventures of Gyno-Star via my Links page! Many thanks to the talented Rebecca Cohen for letting me borrow her characters! Last year, I had considered having Cannon play a prank on Gyno-Star, but I couldn't think of a practical joke that was clever enough. I like to make Cannon's pranks take advantage of the target's attributes, or at least be poetic in some way. While Gyno-Star does have a few character flaws (she can be a bit vain or self-absorbed at times), I didn't feel like Cannon's pranks could take full advantage of that, and I felt that it wouldn't be right for Cannon to play a prank that mocked Gyno-Star's feminist ideals (That's the sort of thing that Gyno-Star's villains would do). This year, I considered Gyno-Star again, but then I thought it would be fun for him to prank one of Gyno-Star's villains, and playing this joke on the Happy Homemaker just sprang to mind. I have to be honest, Happy Homemaker looks kinda like an evil version of my own mom in that first panel. But I suppose that she is, essentially, an evil mom, having unsuccessfully attempted to rebrand herself as "The Stay-At-Home-Mom". I had fun drawing her retro 1950s look, which seems to work well with my drawing style (Which was partially inspired by retro-style cartoons). Sharp-eyed viewers might notice that one picture frame reads "Lair Sweet Lair" (although it's partly obscured by a text balloon). I liked that gag, as well as "Out Darn Spot" (If that's not the name of a cleaning product, it should be!). Drawing this comic was a lot of fun, which probably made it easier to stay focused and complete it in record time (I submitted it to Rebecca Cohen for approval before posting it). I consider it an honor that she liked the concept when I first proposed it, and an even greater honor that she liked the finished product! :-D I do like making fan art, but if you want to let me know how much you like MY characters, don't forget that I still have my annual Fan Art Contest going on! You can click the "Contest Rules an' Stuff" button on my main page in order to read the rules in FULL detail. Be aware that I've tweaked the contest this year, and now EVERYONE is guaranteed a prize! So click that button for all the specific details, and have fun entering! -
Cannon respects Belt Boy... but his definition of "respect" still allows for a few practical jokes like this. And getting free food is the most practical application of practical jokes in his book! By the way, I'm reminding you that there's LESS THAN A MONTH LEFT in my fan art contest! I'm also reminding you that if you're not so great at art, that there's an avatar contest to see who makes the best avatar using a video game or online character generator (Like Miis, Sims, etc.). Remember, you must enter by or before my birthday on May 19th! Check out the rules on my main page and get to it!

It's that time of year again! Well, almost. This is the last scheduled update of March, so I'm uploading my annual April Fools' filler kinda early. For those of you who aren't familiar with HoC's annual tradition, Cannon pranks someone from a different webcomic each year for April Fools'. This year, he's pranking Carol and Reggie from the webcomic Between Failures. His prank is based on something that actually happened while I was working at a retail store; some dope pulled the store's fire alarm (which had been placed above a toy shelf), thinking that it was a child's toy. No harm was done, and we called the fire department to let them know it was a false alarm. Still, I couldn't help but glare at that moron as he asked his girlfriend to take a picture of him next to the fire alarm to commemorate his great moment of supreme idiocy. Anyway, Between Failures is a great webcomic about the people who work at a Megatainment book store - their lives, their relationships, their dorky conversations, and their experiences working in retail. Fans have compared it to the movie Clerks, although the comic's creator, Jackie Wohlenhaus, likens it more to Empire Records. If you liked either of those, you'll probably enjoy this comic. And if you haven't seen either of those movies, you might want to rent them... but not before reading Between Failures. If you don't mind a comic with some swearing, sexual situations, semi-nudity, and one instance of extreme violence against a shelving unit, you can check it out at betweenfailures.com and give it a read! Let 'em know Josh sent you, and while you're at it, wish Jackie a happy 10th anniversary to his comic! :-) Speaking of webcomics celebrating their 10th anniversary, don't forget that my comic is also turning 10 this year! And for a webcomic, the 10th year is the Fan Art Anniversary (Although, to be fair, my comic celebrates the Fan Art Anniversary every year!). Be sure to enter my contest if you haven't yet...!
