This would be especially difficult if you were playing a mime, and had to do Charades for everything you said.

I am of 2 minds when it comes to "just roll for persuasion" vs role playing the encounter.  Just rolling for it wasn't a choice before 3.x and the old school gamer in me sorta misses the role playing aspect.  On the other hand, I have a slight stutter and have a bit of trouble doing off the cuff speeches, so not being penalized for not being able to role play something is good.  Of course "bard" as a primary class didn't exist before 3.x any way.
