Not only that, it seems that he noticed it's being cast. Now, how well is Susan capable of fighting without the slow spell? ... assuming she will catch him.
  2. Story Friday March 27 2020

Her default form can't lift 4 times her weight unless she only weighs 50 pounds. That has to be her fairy form that Ellen was talking about. Maybe she got stronger meanwhile? Not that Nanase wouldn't be able to stay on scale and make it say 50 pounds. Maybe, but I don't think six is that many ... well, not every exercise is record-breaking. Bull or bear is where I would put her. Bull probably. Note that she's probably not destroying punching bags always, just when ... "focused". Maybe if she would be benchpressing in THAT state she would do more.

Yes. And that Power-per-weight thing should be converted to unit s-1 meaning how big part of it's mass the machine can use for usable work per second. Preferably, in scientific notation, as I don't think we have big enough SI prefixes.
  4. Story Friday March 27 2020

I never really thought Nanase had a ego problem, throughout the comic she'd shown a lot of selflessness and I never got the impression that she tried to flaunt her abilities for attention, even when she wasn't being discreet about using magic I don't think she was intentionally showing off. Any kind of attention she got, she probably enjoyed, but I doubt any of it was forced. I'd say an unhealthy ego would be going out of one's way to make someone notice you which I'd have to say was what Nanase was doing with Ashley earlier, but at least now Nanase's realized that before it got worse. Yup, and I already discussed it in previous comics forum topic. Dan's giving her some depth, which is good Also, like, while she started relatively complicated compared to some other characters (like Diane or Susan), those got recently serious depth upgrade, so it's probably her turn. Nanase isn't the Mary Sue of EGS, if one exists at all it is Grace. I don't think that the term, as originally meant applies to any character in EGS, but as I said, Grace comes the closest. Well, if you are looking in the "correct" wrong way, you can see whole casts of Mary Sues in multiple comicses ... and, if you are looking for the self-insert element, then Tedd and Susan should count as well. Personally, I think that no character can be Mary Sue by itself. The negativeness of Mary Sue is not in any trait she has, nor the combination: it's in what she does with the story. (Also, I really liked the example where someone wrote deliberately overdone Mary Sue story ... and then someone else rewrote it so it happened exactly same way, but additional explanation made everything totally normal.)

Yeah, that's one of those non-obvious ... although it might be generic enough for anyone except atheists ... You're better than me in this. Only results regarding offensive swears I got are negative. Of course, even those are not necessary. Prayer should be just between you and the God anyway. Matthew 6:5. I think it is the idea of meeting that is emphasized, and that's not entirely without merit. Social isolation is unhealthy, and even though some folk prefer it, it's not without costs to them in terms of mental health. That's true, however is still mixing two totally independent things - religion and social life. Also, I would argue that church would be even worse for social life than theatre/cinema ... or did YOU ever saw groups of people discussing preaching in front of church? (And, obviously, the best place for social life seem to be pub. Which is not exactly compatible with religion, unless you worship Dionysus.) I've just said that it doesn't seem it would matter to them. Engineering not relevant? Is there such a topic? I see control systems in everything around me, including the way COVID-19 spreads. Who wouldn't want to maximize his tomato crop? Well, I see IT all around as well. You know they are planning to use phone tracking data to find who the infected were in contact with? But I must admit, it's hard to see it in my tomatoes. Wait. Control systems? That's programming isn't it? Actually, there are possibilities which would allow acquired immunity to work without providing workable options for vaccine. Are you an adherent to Gnocchicism? Definitely no. And I would rather convert to Pastafarianism than to eat that. Spaghetti I at least like. Well, megaton of TNT is not exactly SI either but pretty standard ... and of course, energy should be measured in grams, anything else is just adding unnecessary unit as if it would make the calculation work in different universe ... Wait what? You mean that haircut length can differ between units without causing any interoperability issues?

  8. NP Thur March 19 2020

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/textarea-cache/ - thousands of thanking posts I though we are talking about abuse (of power). THAT tends to happen basically always. Because we are humans, power corrupts and while there MIGHT be few people who can overcome the temptation there is not enough of them to keep even single office corruption-free for long. Well it wasn't THAT long after the fact. I agree that later it became hard to do any significant change, but in those first few centuries ... Castles also have cultural value. In fact, ANY building can have cultural value if old enough. And, while the monasteries used to be centers of learning, that's more about the books and teachers, not the building itself. That was what I was talking about. Jesus didn't ever do any attempt to build any temples and start teaching from them - he was teaching while walking ... well, traveling. Exactly. Yet, lot of Catholics and Christians in general consider for some reason important to be in church in Sunday. If it would be known I wouldn't be the only one knowing about that. Like, obviously, there were some pretty big changes, but it's not known if it involved rewriting of bible. Yes. There are parts which ARE falsifiable. Also, you can show a contradiction between two articles of faith: usually, neither is falsifiable by itself, but you know both can't be true. Farming tends to be larger. I'm growing the tomatoes on window, and my IT job having any relevance to it was a joke - reaction on what you said, which could be read to imply engineering is relevant. Hmmm ... maybe he got wiser during his life? Not actual trainee, but the calculations used to be done by flight engineer before. This plane was supposed to only need pilot and co-pilot, and while those were not trainees in piloting, they didn't had that much experience with refueling. Also, they switched from imperial to metric recently. And the plane itself was new with higher-than-usual number of problems. It's described in detail on wikipedia. Huh, I thought you said you were, at some point. Sorry. No, I was talking about the COUNTRY being mostly atheistical. There are lot of atheists around but I'm not one. I'm roughly same level of sure last twenty years, but I'm not sure if I'm as sure as you are now. And I'm pretty sure that my combination of believes is unique enough there is no group. I very much agree, though even joking can be overdone. You can say single joke too many times and you can joke in bad moment, but you can't overdone joking itself. We'll see. There's probably some stable portion of the genome that can be exploited. I don't think the whole thing has the same variability. Features may vary, but there is an underlying structure that is stable, even across species. Viri have much bigger variations than eucaryotes, so, not that much. Most coronaviri attack cells in nose, not in lungs. If THIS specific difference would go away, the mortality would go WAAAAY down for people infected by the mutated one. And yes, the mutated one could provide some (at least partial) immunity to the original, AND spread faster, thus help getting rid of original. Ridiculous? Burn the heretic! (Ok, I'm not actually Pastafarianist ... I did however converted to Discordianism during studying university and I'm pretty certain that I still count as Discordian no matter what I do or what else I believe.)

Some comic advances the plot without single word of dialogue. Granted, not in EGS, in fact I can't remember ANY page without dialogue OR narration in story section, but there are comics like that. Could be. Except, of course, it's no more Noah than Rhoda is Rhoda - I mean, we call her Rhoda but she's some monk. Unlikely. I think he would be stalking them personally. THAT is possible.
  10. NP Sat March 21 2020

I think you mean gratuitous. That means free, but is also used to mean putting it out there or excessive, depending on your tone. Gratuitous fan service would be boldly displaying fan service, and/or using it a lot. Gracious means full of grace, kindness would be in the same vein. Ok. So google's dictionary is wrong.

Too little ego is unhealthy. So is too much ego. Agree. Only question is if Nanase's ego is too big
  12. Story Wednesday March 25, 2020

Hmmm ... yeah, I would say that talking about the sexy party game with Ashley first, to give her option to reject privately, is a good way to go. Susan is completely ok with rejecting publicly and Diane is unlikely to reject, just like others. Of course, they should only start PLAYING the game after eating. Yeah ... Nanase clearly complains about herself and Diane having bigger ego that they should. Ellen only dreams to have so big ego. Ellen is still mostly Elliot. She doesn't want to, but she must be spending effort to be like she wants to. To Diane this comes naturally.

The way Justin was outed and treated might have kept others from coming forward too, wouldn't be surprised if some joined in on the bullying out of fear of getting outed, like coming to Justin's defense would make people suspicious. I didn't meant immediately afterwards. I'd say he was operating on emotions back then. This time around Justin isn't doing this because he's looking for a relationship. He may be analyzing the emotions more than on the previous party (he's more certain what he wants now) but still not as much logically as you described.

Anyone who fails to understand why it is a bad idea to let his slaves know more than he does, deserves to be outwitted by them. Unfortunately, barbarians got them sooner. ... although ... let's think again about what happened in Eastern Roman Empire ... oriented towards Greek rather than Latin culture ... at one point ruled by illiterate Justinian I, possibly last Roman emperor who was native speaker of Latin, and his wife Theodora, of Greek Cypriot descent ...

Well, it was Soviet Union shuttle program. Despite the linked article claiming it was canceled, I would suspect what actually happened was that after collapse of Soviet Union it never actually turned into Russia shuttle program ...
  16. NP Thur March 19 2020

Actually, what I meant is that the OTHER gospels might've been altered - like, not that it couldn't happen in Tomas's, of course it could, but it wouldn't be because it's gnostics but simply because it could happen to any gospel (and probably happened to all, even if in various degrees). Has that ever NOT happened? It's possible that Gnosticism is too focused on one aspect, but it's certain that the reason it was labeled heresy was because it didn't required clergy. The quotes I mentioned actually say it directly. In one movie, they said it even more directly I didn't find it verbatim in the gospel itself, but it seems to be exactly what the gnostics believe: That churches - the buildings I mean - are completely useless in religion. Them being labeled heresy for that is obvious, and not for any good reason. Discussion wasn't an option, because how can you argue against that, considering Jesus's opinion on churches as shown in other gospels? Well, the authors who get to the bible in first few centuries could get away with more significant changes. I think that's in conjunction with The Book of Revelations aka The Revelation of John, which is a recount of a vision he had, 'he' being a dude named John who is said to be the same John that wrote The Gospel of John and the Letters aka Epistles of John, but there were a lot of Johns. So yeah, what you said. Yes, exactly. There is a serious serialization happening at birth. There is no way two children would fit at once, so one of the twins is always older, even if just by few minutes. These people affect our nominally secular text books, ('teach the controversy' <eye roll>), so it's kind of a big deal here. Google 'Monkey Trial' and be amazed at how long we've been dragging this dead weight around. 1925? Unbelievable. Note that the article doesn't actually mention Catholic church's opinion on that, nor Evangelic or Protestant, so it's easy to misunderstood who was the party claiming it (although World Christian Fundamentals Association article mentions something about Protestantism). There is a saying, "Never mud wrestle a pig, you'll both get dirty, and the pig enjoys it." One of the problems with debating these yahoos is that it's giving them a measure of credence to even do so. Bear on mind, they're not even wrong. Yes. Proof by contradiction is basic logic: if you take some proposition and prove that true is false, then the proposition is false. Anyone who can't understand that is not worth discussing with. As an engineer, I'd say, 'It's close enough'. That .002 seconds is not going to matter when you are covering your tomatoes for the night, against the frost. As IT, I waited with planting tomatoes until it will be warm enough even in night. In his discourse, Jesus expected his first century listeners to be able to follow multiplying two numbers, so it wouldn't be much of an excuse. He also expected they would spread peace over earth. He was naive optimist ... or didn't mind to be seen as one. True, it was only innovative in the context of their own culture. The Greeks were far ahead of them, which they knew and they valued Greeks for their knowledge. Literally. Slave culture. I don't know why mathematical knowledge did not bleed over from one culture to the next more efficiently than it did, because surely the Romans had access to Greek knowledge. I suppose different number systems and systems of calculating was a hindrance. Also, I would assume lot of Romans valued knowledge only in abstract way - like, they understood it was important but didn't think it was necessary for them personally to have any. They bought slaves to read and write so they didn't need to. I can understand ordinary people are using such units in ordinary lives. I don't understand why they are used in science. The expensive probe wasn't only thing that crashed. There was at least one airplane crash caused by assuming the amount of fuel was in pounds when it was in kilograms. The airplane was cheaper, but there were people onboard. They were lucky. Well, you've got to scream something during sex. Do you say, "Oh, my lack of God"? No I don't - it's usually the girl who screams However, yes, I do use obvious and non-obvious religion terms and names when swearing. (Which Christians actually are expected not to, but that's another thing). Somewhen on university I realized the paradox and tried to learn to swear differently. Still trying. (Note that changing "Oh my God" to "Oh my gods" would actually be simple, and I'm not atheist personally.) Jokes are important. And much healthier than alcohol. (I had this discussion under different comics. We agreed that humor is best solution, but even alcohol or antidepressants are better than suicide.) I don't think it's going away. In a few years, it will be one the the shots you get. I don't think they will have more success developing vaccine against this coronavirus than they have with others, like HCoV-229E or HCoV-OC43. They mutate too much. Hopefully SARS-CoV-2 mutate into something less serious ; after all, killing the host is not in his interest either.

I suppose that depends on if Dan has figured out the next part of the plot in enough detail to start in on it. Based on tweets and commentaries, several of the recent strips have been written last minute, and Dan has been suffering from a lot of writer's block. He hasn't said so outright that I can recall, but I think this Catalina+Rhoda romance sub-plot has been mostly filler (at least in the sense that Dan has been using it to stall for time). That, and also I suspect that he LIKES drawing it, in a "it's relaxing" way. I think there was some tweet about it or something, considering I don't see it in any commentary ... I remember I was wondering if Dan ever gets to the point where he would be drawing more and more gracious fanservice just to relax (Wait ... is gracious the right word? Alternative spellcheck offers would be gratuitous, but that can't be it as it's definitely called for.)

... with hands offscreen. She very well may have "fab abs" in canon. The last time we say Rhoda in canon, in The Legend of Diane, she was wearing dress that covered her abs. Likewise in Escape from the Mall she was wearing a shirt that covered her abs. Granted in EftM she had just started her magic so it had not had a chance to make for the effortless six pack abs. Yup. She may have "fab abs" and we just never saw them. Possibly noone saw them. SHE may not notice she has effortless six pack abs ... ... ok, Catalina probably know. And Rhoda seems like exact opposite of exhibitionist. I think he also meant "not every person who frequents a gym is gym-rat.
  19. Story Monday March 23 2020

Justin also has it in his head that gay men aren't very common, Grace of course doesn't think so, I'm really surprised that Sarah hasn't chimed in on that considering 4 out of 5 men she talked too back in Identity turned out to be gay. Neither Grace's nor Sarah's experience is representative. The statistics probably holds, but it's big school. .... and, remember, Justin was outed before whole school. It makes sense that he's skeptical when even after being outed this way he didn't get any boyfriend. Hopefully. Probably because they were giving him attention for the wrong reasons. Granted, the one that stated her frustration for not being having any chance of dating Justin might count on it's own, but it does get watered down by the rest of it...also the fact that she already had a boyfriend might not give the feeling that she'd only date someone because they might have done something cool, which makes it possible that she'd jump ship the moment someone else does something cool. Then you have this page, where it seems like some of the people complimenting him might have been the same people that pestered him for being gay, the last two girls might have also fell under "it could have been nice to hear on it's own but the other stuff kinda diminishes the effect" also not sure how Justin would feel about people quoting disney movies in regards to him. I would expect he get look like this more often ... but most times he won't even notice BECAUSE it's from girl. Oh, and I think that the boyfriend of that girl is sort of already used to it - I imagine that she was already reacting this way to some movie stars and similar, although this might be first time she had this kind of reaction to someone who was actually near. He probably hopes that if someone else like this appear, he will be also gay or at least already taken. When Justin became female at Grace's birthday, he had a crush of Elliot and Elliot's reaction to Justin's form only fueled that more. Maybe Justin wants to see if there's any difference between being considered attractive by someone they knew, and at the time had deep feelings for, and being considered attractive by complete strangers. Hmmmm ... that would make sense if Justin would be thinking logically. I don't think he does, he probably operates on emotions now.
  20. Story Monday March 23 2020

I'm still not sure why he wants that look but I understand that it's hard for him to get it in normal way. Also, I would totally give Dan incredible magic power if I could. I would also totally assume he would change gender of multiple people, but I think he wouldn't kill anyone. Unlike lot of other people. (Also, I would totally turn him immortal if I could, but that's for the selfish reason of wanting to see Nanase's and Ellen's children.)
  21. NP Thur March 19 2020

I disagree. Gnosticism is a known entity. Considered a heresy by what is now viewed as mainstream, is has distinguishing features. That a Gnostic might want to make his views known and feel like (s)he has to resort to a subterfuge seems likely. On the other hand, Gnosticism was only recognized as heresy later ; it IS possible that Thomas the apostle had opinions later labeled as gnostic. His "I don't believe until I see it" would point in such direction, wouldn't it? The apostles obviously had reason to write something down ; however, later authors had reasons to modify what they wrote. I'm not expert on the issue, but I remember to read that those gospels (or at least some of them) don't even read as consistent texts and that parts seem to be copied between them or from older source. In fact, see wikipedia take on this subject. Also, there are speculation about John's use of Psilocybe. Or was that different John? On wait, it's unlikely someone would know. Your experience is much different than mine. Catholics here are not particularly vocal about such nonsense, here it's the Evangelical fundies, and they are rabid. We have a Creation Museum. In Kentuckyt, there's a Noah's Ark Park. I must admit it's not my personal experience, just something I read, and I might misremember who it was. The Creationists disagree; to them, 'a day' is 24 hours. And logic has nothing to do with it, so don't bring up, 'but the length of the day changes daily'. It's not surprising they disagree OR that they fail basic logic. As a bonus, none of those days is really 24 hours. The solar days is closest with current value of 86, 400.002 seconds. And, yes, it changes. I wouldn't be surprised if many creationists would have similar issues with understanding squaring numbers. However, they don't have the excuse of living in first century AD. Although I would argue against your implication that Romans were first coming with term for ten thousand. They might make it popular, but in 400 BC Greek already used οἱ Μύριοι. In fact, they normally counted up to myriad myriad (one hundred million) and Archimedes proposed system counting to 108x10^16. We have a constitutional amendment which prohibits the US from supporting a state religion, but that does not keep folks from promoting the notion. Regularly. Like water flowing down from the mountain. Because it's obvious we need to support my religion. I used to think the atheist were obsessive about fighting this, but they have a good point; it's insidious. There's never enough. The only recourse is to draw the line at 'none'. Yes. Unfortunately, even our mostly atheistic nation isn't completely immune to this ... It will be interesting to see how this plays out, in a "May you live in interesting times" sense. Definitely. Of course, we DO live in interesting times. Unfortunately. And it seems that something like this wouldn't have even just chance to be the most interesting thing happening. (I think that specifically Coronavirus epidemic will remain on quite short list of notable epidemic quite a long time. I mean, I hope so because it would only disappear if there would be something worse soon.)

  23. NP Thur March 19 2020

I think they're a shade nastier than the 'invade your neighbor' variety. Some lean more toward genocide. Ours, the French, and the Russian had elements of 'show no quarter'. Ours had a lot of irregulars slaughtering neighbors in contested territories. Ours had troops that refused to honor the surrender and became notorious outlaws until killed. Our split our country to this day, the French and the Russian led to brutal slaughter of the other side, and others, well, genocide. (Sam is local news, I've driven past this statue.) I would expect that the wars where the surrender is generally honored would be the exception. But I'm not doing statistics. ... which, back in era where it were usually the educated intelligent people who emigrated because they turned to be too educated for European establishment, led to even more technology forward. To be fair, there is even more people who failed to adopt the culture when they immigrate ... to America settled by natives. At least most people are not calling native americans immigrants. Yes, it is; Indians have many regional languages, so, to speak to each other, they all learn English, and their thickly accented version is actually the norm. Exactly. A bit of conflation there, I think. The Gospel of Thomas is also attributed to the same Thomas, but I don't think the indigenous Indian church holds it as anything; they only share alleged source. Pity. I find Thomas's authorship as likely as authorship of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Those seems to be also disputed. Both originals and translations are linked from the wikipedia article. ... ok, those "originals" might not be everything available ... They're not that old. True. Although there are some group of Catholics which claim that Tyrannosaurus rex went extinct during the Flood because Noe didn't allowed it on his arch, even THAT would be well before the start of Catholics church. Day is defined as one rotation of Earth around it's axis. Which day was Earth created? When it started to rotate? Exactly. The capital punishment has bad PR because it's usually overused, and because it's used just as another point of scale. In my opinion, no matter the severity of crime, capital punishment should also require better quality of evidence. But there ARE cases where there really isn't any doubt. Obviously, it's not meant as provocation, to surprise someone with serving such food. It would be official condition of citizenship, proof that they are really interested in our culture, and it would imply that we don't want to give citizenship to people with faith against it (which really isn't traditional in our country). It MIGHT be too much, after all freedom of faith IS part of our tradition (after traditional problems with faith-based wars, which were obviously all between Christians but that didn't made them any more civil) but support for parties which are against immigration is rising ... and this would protect our culture almost as well as no immigration at all. That's, obviously, both Russia. But yes, communists party official newspaper was propaganda during the cold war and remains propaganda afterwards ... (Note that it's Krokodil ... funny how you have the link correct but title not.)
  24. NP Thur March 19 2020

And Charles V needed for him to die without one, yeah. I though those were Spanish . I'm sure it was just as civil as other civil wars. Or wars in general. Except the world ones, those were worse. Interesting mix. Reminds me the joke: Which English is the correct one? The British one, with 20 millions people talking it, or the Russian one, with 200 millions of russians talking it as second language? Of course, the answer, outside the scope of the joke and not that much funny, is the India's one, with even more speakers. Oh, and Thomas. I know that one. Sympathetic. Didn't know there is whole church around it. A bit? Who's bit, tyrannosaurus rex? Oh wait that's bite. They don't seem competent enough to just report about him. But, like, hard to say, perhaps it just looks that way due to later editing. Anyway, my opinion is that there is no reason to evaluate Bible as one piece when it clearly isn't. I suppose it went through the similar process in which story about hero fighting two bandits turns into hero fighting whole army during the time the hero spend in pub afterwards. World used to be smaller and people might take that story into places not actually affected by that flood later. Yeah, I've heard that too, specifically about Germany. Unfortunately, hanging is not popular in Europe. Yet. And yes, refugees should be thankful at least enough to honor the culture of country which took them in. I would recommend simple test based on traditional national food and drink. (The drink would be, obviously, beer ... and while I don't want to name our traditional nationalal food to keep the illusion the country I live in is secret, I suppose you know where I'm heading to ...) ... we definitely don't have news sources THIS bad. It's true our prime minister owns several big newspapers, but his advocates didn't tried to use it as argument in any court case yet, and in fact tries to camouflage it. Not just money but real estate as well--remember, before global trade, most wealthy people owned some measure of productive land. The Church also wanted to prevent blood-based nepotism, in which noble or wealthy families would monopolize a lot of Bishop positions for generation after generation. The word I was looking for was "property". Yeah, the cash wasn't that important.
