To be fair, the manuals for magic in the EGS-verse are a confusing mess. Even nice spells can be hard to decipher. Good point. IF someone becames aberration by using own spell, we can hardly call him stupid for not understanding manual which is hard to read on purpose. Given the way magic works, it's probably quite easy to get the spell to become an Aberration. The desire for immortality just needs to be strong enough. ... meaning that the hard part of decision happens on subconscious level ...

Unless your analytics solution converge so slowly you need to rely on numerical integration to get results before you die. It's true that finite-dimensional linear systems are never chaotic, however with nonlinear system, you can get chaotic system with only three variables. Not only calculation. Any error in initial value, no matter how small, can cause any difference in result, no matter how big - just wait. Even if you can completely predict future based on position and speed of all particles, there is this little problem: quantum physics says you literally CANT know both position and speed (momentum) of particle exactly. Soooo ... you don't get your input data. The NAND flash memory uses tunnel injection for writing and tunnel release for erasing. The same tunnel as in quantum tunnelling or Fowler–Nordheim tunneling. If macroscopic physic would be deterministic, you wouldn't be able to write anything on your SSD. Also, the second world war would take longer to finish, because nuclear bomb only works based on radioactive decay, which can ONLY be described in terms of probability - totally nondeterministic. Macroscopic enough? If not, look at Sun.

People who's worldview would be seriously messed up by observing breaking the known laws of physics are usually capable of ignoring demonstration of such even hours long. Possibly with comments like "it's in his sleeve" and "I've seen Copperfield doing this better". Or "I didn't though I'm so drunk". Yes, definitely - and not only in story, even in reality BUT only if it ends well. People are usually willing to ignore or excuse they didn't consent to it if they enjoyed it. That's why surprise parties are not evil. Usually. Or why you don't always need to explicitly ask girl if you can kiss her. The problem is that you need to know the person very well to be sure they will enjoy it. Especially if it's something as dangerous as transformations. Of course, we have near-omniscient immortals here ; Pandora marking Tedd is good example where was ZERO risk of Tedd objecting to being marked. And in general, due to magic marks being based on desire, affinity or personality, marking people is less evil than it would seem. It STILL made Adrian angry when he hear about someone doing it without people's consent and knowledge. Regarding Sailor Moon: I didn't actually saw it, but I did saw the transformations. Aren't those basically changing clothes? Doesn't seem so dangerous. Also, weren't they predestined, reincarnated or something to became Sailor Scouts? It's something different when you can't really choose anyone else. Also, usually the fate of universe (or at least planet) is at stake, and in such situation some evil can be excused. Although it still raises the question why it was so necessary to send her into battle without ANY explanation beforehand. Meanwhile, if it's just for fun? No excuse. Especially if it's going to be someone's ELSE fun.

That is a tall assumption. There is ONE trait in common for aberrations we can be certain of. They feared death so much that they were willing to pay any price to avoid it. Trying to ram this into a specific category of mental disorder is as simplistic as saying that they were all members of the same political party. Fear of death could motivate even people who consider losing empathy big price instead of advantage, yes. Also, there are lot of people who hate (almost) everyone even without having mental disorder. And when Sirleck told Magus he should become aberration to get rid of empathy, Magus rejected ... but there ARE people who feel empathy and don't want to. And, well ... I still think there can be people who just didn't read the manual carefully enough. Although those would likely count as "not smart" ...
  5. Story Friday August 25, 2017

Exactly - the way she realized Sam is transgender was extremely good example. I'm not diagnosed but I suspect I'm also on the autistic spectrum - I mean, somewhere else on it than "zero". However, I already know several people who make me feel lucky I'm more neurotypical than them. And yes, sure you can be on autistic spectrum, have antisocial personality disorder, allergy on cats, arachnophobia, flu and broken leg. None of those are mutually exclusive. Also, as far as I now, they are independent, so having more than one is just coincidence and happens less often that just one. Regarding aberrations, they have antisocial personality disorder because they are aberrations, but they only are on autistic spectrum if they were there as humans. Hard to say about the others ... we know about one aberration who didn't seem to have arachnophobia , and it's quite likely they have better regeneration, which may mean less problems with broken legs. This is a known bug in the forum software (actually I think it's in the default configuration). This thread may be helpful. I don't have greasemonkey so I just made a bookmarklet. Fix EGS style
  6. Story Friday August 25, 2017

I don't think so. I think that aberrations lack emotional empathy (the ability to FEEL empathy) but may not lack cognitive empathy (the ability to UNDERSTAND another's mental state). Which is combination making manipulating someone EASIER. In other words, their lack of empathy will be the kind psychopaths have, not the kind autistic people have.

Single word which stops life and get you out of it? ... euthanasia? I think I saw several advertisement on this topic. Like, drink this beverage and live will be fun. (And the beverage wasn't even alcoholic if I remember correctly). Of course, there was also that famous person promising blood, sweat and tears.
  8. NP Wednesday August 23, 2017

Perception is if you don't want to overlook something literally. In the metaphorical cases, I don't think it's still relevant. For example, you need perception to notice there are 10 numbers on walls of the room, but I don't think it will help you notice that all of them except one are prime numbers.
  9. Story Friday August 25, 2017

You know, the Bon Voyage might not be there BEFORE he activated it. In fact it seems it wasn't there, unless that was just LoD. He definitely said it was sabotage.
  10. NP Wednesday August 23, 2017

Sometimes the obvious things are easier to overlook than the non-obvious. Nevertheless, to be incapable of overlooking something would likely require INFINITE intellect. Quantum physics provide extremely hard randomness: for example, if you have particle with spin 1 in direction up and you measure it in left-right direction, it's supposed to be totally random 50% if you get left or right. It's little harder to magnify difference like this to macroscopic level, but chaotic systems should be able to manage that. And, because of related problem of what happens with entangled particles, I'm sure this is experimentally proven as reliably as is possible.
  11. NP Friday, Aug 25 2017

Consent: obviously. Any time: I don't think it needs to be literally any time, as long it's not dangerous which it shouldn't be anyway. There can be something like penalty minimal time, to provide incentive to keep playing. But of course this needs to be part of that "in advance" they consent to.

However, the most important point was already touched by Hanma - namely, "until they finish the game", meaning it's temporary. ... although "what if they fail to finish the game" is the next question.
  14. NP Wednesday August 23, 2017

Hari Seldon would disagree, but on the other hand he did failed to predict The Mule. Yes, in fact I would say EGS very clearly states that immortals have mental capacity big enough ... and also shows that nevertheless, they can still be surprised.
  15. Story Friday August 25, 2017

On what basis? Everything Sirleck knows would be from whatever he got online and from Voltaire impersonating the PI. He could reasonably expect Adrian to be a threat, but not that big a threat. Hmmm ... even based on what he knows, Adrian is supposed to be older than human live. But, yes, there is obviously big difference between hundred years old elf and elf who is at least three hundreds years old AND trained by Pandora "the reason why werewolves are extinct" Raven. I'm more worried about what's under that scarf. I expect there would be lot of sharp teeth included. AND is still around. Although wait: does Magus know about Adrian Raven being Pandora's Raven child? I mean, sure, the names ARE suspicious ... Yes. He would prefer if just the immortals would be in that fight and Elliot and Ellen would be left somewhere else. He will be surprised if immortals would stay and Elliot will join the fight.
  16. http://www.egscomics.com/index.php?id=2389 Almost. Just little more down and we could've seen the leg of that person from previous page or something. ... so, the first bonus seems out. The second likely wouldn't hold long either.
  17. NP Wednesday August 23, 2017

Okay, so immortality is not for the lazy. If someone expects the world to come to their door and entertain them constantly, with no effort on their part, then the world will disappoint and bore them. Wait, isn't it netflix business model? Not speaking about several others? I think in case of those teenagers it's related to hormones. Of course, there are lot of adults who don't have such excuse. Maybe few links? Surprising javascript: https://github.com/denysdovhan/wtfjs https://wtfjs.com/ ... hmmm, those likely wouldn't help, too technical. I remember reading much better list but can't find it now. Maybe this one https://charlieharvey.org.uk/page/javascript_the_weird_parts ... And obviously Halting problem. And Turing jump. Are you sure it's just non-programmers who are lost on this one? While true, programming is very special example, if you look at it from the mathematical/logical/philosophical side. On the other hand, it also doesn't seem that new from this side: sure, it took humans centuries to build that, but someone clever could realize all that stuff without having access to physical computer. Programming is also supposed to be deterministic. It's likely immortals would be more surprised by cases where it isn't than where it is. I think that cultural advancements are generally more surprising than technological ones, on the other hand the SPEED of technological progress in last century or two surprised almost everyone. Regarding cultural advancement, people seems to be more surprised by how SLOW it is.
  18. Story, Wednesday, Aug 23, 2017

Definitely. Exactly, drawing attention is the objective after all. If he does he is very optimistic. I don't think any would survive. I mean, unless Pandora will hurry, she wouldn't have anyone left to kill herself. But, frankly, I think both Sirleck and Magus expect most of aberrations will die and Sirleck doesn't exactly mind never paying most of that money. Yes, that seems likely. Also, I suspect that without this incentive lot of aberrations would attack each other, or at least not care about "friendly" fire.
  19. NP Wednesday August 23, 2017

There are PEOPLE who are border. TEENAGERS. Just because there is stuff you didn't tried doesn't mean you don't FEEL like there is nothing interesting left in world. Also, specifically in case of immortals, we can't really understand what their clairvoyance does with it. Maybe programming is boring for them because they immediately know what the program will be doing when they look at it - ... ok, ok, that sounds very unbelievable. Especially in case of javascript. Javascript can ALWAYS surprise you. Also there is this little bit called halting problem.
  20. Story, Wednesday, Aug 23, 2017

Plus they aren't in Mopperville yet. Hmmmmm ... and the one interpreting the bounty is Sirleck ... ok, bonus may still happen.
  21. Story, Wednesday, Aug 23, 2017

Who says any of them are? I doubt the secretary he makes dance for him knows. As for these guys, I think they're both aberrations, one just looks more human than the other. The butler also looked surprised. And I agree that both these guys are clearly aberrations. Target is Adrian Raven.
  22. NP Wednesday August 23, 2017

I suppose it's not personal, that he's just unable to reply to everything. And that there isn't bigger chance for reply to someone who already got reply in past. Although maybe patreon would be more reliable?
  23. NP Wednesday August 23, 2017

Which shouldn't surprise anyone. Hanma might not have clear understanding what culture is. What she didn't like was the isolation. There is nothing wrong with either e-mailing Dan or tweeting him about it. Feel free to do either Or tumblr him. I mean, he can also be contacted on tumblr. Only difference from canon is that Hanma didn't told this to Susan. She is explaining her origin story and THAT is canon per the "The storyline's not canon, but Hanma definitely is. She has to be." comment. Of course they could wipe us out if not for immortal law but what would they gain from it? I already mentioned that one of most important reasons why immortal laws exists is to prevent one immortal to kill other immortal fun by killing his pet human(s).

However, it's possible she tried to correct Ellen. And languages in general. Based on how Will taught Elliot Uryuomoco without Elliot ASKING for it, just to show how quickly it can be done, it would be possible for Tedd to learn any language Will knows - but Will himself may not know japanese (they DO know french on the other hand) and Tedd might not care about any other language than uryuomoco. That might actually make him LESS likely to realize they shouldn't be used in normal english. It's bad argument for being wrong, but due to conservation of detail, if there are two possibilities and there is evidence in comics for one of them, it's much more likely that is the possibility which is true. If there would be some reason it can't be Nanase, then we could be thinking about possible alternatives. But there is none ; Nanase makes most sense from ALL characters shown up to now and arguing that there is other option is like speculating there will be some new character who didn't appeared till know but who is Susan's friend and knows japanese. (... or ... well ... it IS possible that Catalina is fluent in Japanese and that it came out when she was hanging out with Susan ... )
