  1. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

I think of Magus as more being merged with Elliot rather than possessing him like Sirleck. The Elliot part might be be unconscious now, but might wake up later. An internal argument might be coming up in the near future.
  2. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

I suspect it's really something Dan wasn't thinking of at the time he set Magus getting Magus thrown into the Moperverse a couple of years before the creation of Ellen. Or maybe he was emphasizing how much Magus resembles Elliot, just as he wanted to make Terra look like a female Tedd, but his art wasn't good enough yet to quite pull it off--as Dan complains in his commentary for Friday. Magus' very first appearance was closer to thirteen years ago than twelve, and in it he says his plan is for his "resurrection." That implies that he is dead--or undead. Dan hasn't even developed Magus' distinctive blacked-out form yet. Magus could be any age at all at this point, maybe centuries dead. That's a trope that's been used a few times. Anyway, by the time we get to any backstory for Magus, namely the match between Magus and Terra, it's nearly 200 comics later and Dan's art has evolved. His conception of Magus has likely also evolved. Was Magus actually 17-18 at that point, actually older than Elliot? Perhaps. Or maybe he just had a magical growth spurt. Or even a non-magical growth spurt. John Cleese was already six feet tall at fourteen. Does Dan want Magus to be older now? Magus does seem more mature than Elliot, but he's had a harder existence than Elliot, maybe even in his own universe before he became disembodied and stranded in the Moperverse. A perfect fit for his backstory would be if his family was killed by a dragon, or an evil wizard, giving him an obsession something like Abraham's, driving Magus into becoming a battle wizard. By the way, let's not forget that Ellen's second life dreams continued until after high school graduation, which was still more than a year in the future for the gang at Grace's birthday party. Other universes may not be on quite the same calendar as the Moperverse.
  3. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

We know that the universe Blaike was from had werewolves, and the Dewitchery Diamond created the werewolf that killed Blaike. But once you accept travel between universes--which is part of EGS canon--we don't know that the Dewitchery Diamond stayed in the same universe. And we don't know if it didn't travel by itself, maybe thrown into a different universe by the very botched enchantment that created it. For all we know it goes wandering from universe to universe. Or maybe the Moperverse version is really just a shard from the original, with shards scattered across the multiverse like so much shrapnel. Anybody remember Inu Yasha? Also, having the Dewitchery Diamond and Adrian being from another universe might plug a few plot holes. And furthermore, there's more than a superficial resemblance between Dad's Government Job and the Men in Black. Anybody recall that that their most basic job was controlling offworld immigration? La Migra with rayguns.
  4. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

I think Dan likes tying things together too. He wrote an extensive commentary explaining how Susan grew from basically a walk-on to a major character. No. But wherever Blaike lived had at least one dragon.. And, of course, one magical lion-bear. I don't want to get into an argument with Lady Andrea about worlds having sides like coins, dice, or mobius strips.

If they followed Magus right away, yes. They could certainly have driven him off the plane--if they caught the plane. Otherwise they might not have noticed his absence for awhile, and perhaps not have thought about France until they heard Elliot mention that Nanase had gone there. Whatever the explanation, they did eventually find him in France, or come too close for comfort. Something disturbing about Helen and Demetrius: They don't seem to have ever been willing to listen to Magus. I wonder if maybe they'd listen to Ashley if she should ever plead his case to them. Dan seems to have said so. I just looked back at the match between Terra and Magus and saw something different in these two lines of dialog: Terra: This is what REAL power is, Magus! Magus: Your potential is wasted, Terra! Does this remind anyone of a certain conversation between Darth Vader and Obi-wan Kenobi? My tentative plot theory goes along these lines: Terra, her universe's Tedd, is already being corrupted, taking something like that shortcut Noah was thinking about once. Magus is trying to get her back on the right path. But then he's sabotaged. Why? Who would have done that? How about Voltaire. Think about it. Think about Lord Tedd. Voltaire obviously has some grandiose ambitions. Why should they be confined to just one universe?

And of course the Egyptians brought tea and scones to the British Isles. Heka proves it.
  7. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

Then you should beware of creeping Britishness. Have you started calling gasoline "petrol"? Have you lost any teeth recently? Do you actually care about soccer? Britishness can develop into Scottishness; before you know it, you will find yourself eating oatmeal boiled in a sheep's stomach!
  8. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

Maybe the Native Americans had comparable magic to the Europeans and there never were English colonies in North America.
  9. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

Hey, I just noticed the context of the "bloody" in the "bloody list" of Magus' in the second panel: Magus is a Brit! Even if he could drive a car, he'd instinctively drive on the wrong side of the road for the States.
  10. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

But was it really Pandora who gave that "warning?" I believe I brought up that possibility before. Seems reasonable. Plus, being disembodied, being crammed into coach seating wouldn't be an issue. I still haven't completely digested Dan's commentary for this one.
  11. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

A new thought--and not about Nanase, I promise. This week we've found out that four of the five Immortals in the current cast of EGS were mixed up with Magus since sometime in Elliot's fresshman year. Old Jerry seems to be the only exception... so far.
  12. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

Points made. Elliot knew Nanase when she went to France and she'd been training with Greg. But as the Old Hack seems to agree, we still don't have a better reason for Magus to follow Nanase than maybe "As long as I'm getting out of town, why not follow that red-headed girl who looks so much like Terra?"
  13. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

Maybe and maybe, but there's no foreshadowing of either, and, as I pointed out, there's no proof that Elliot even knew Nanase at all that long ago. He couldn't have met her when she was visiting Tedd because he didn't know she was Tedd's cousin until after they broke up. If Dan made up this as a patch to explain why Magus wasn't able to create Ellen when Helen and Demetrius were in France, he's opened up another plot hole in doing it unless he has a plausible justification on the way. One might begin with Ashley asking "Why Nanase?"
  14. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

That still does not explain why NANASE. Magus has only had one interaction with Nanase before this: Being mad at her after she was sharp with Ellen when Ellen was upset with Nanase for cutting her hair. Why would Magus have to follow anyone just to get far away from Moperville long enough for Helen and Demetrius to forget about him?
  15. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

Yes--except I'm afraid that sidesteps the question of why Magus followed Nanase.
  16. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

For obsessive vampire hunters, they didn't know their Aberrations very well if that is true. I assumed they just thought he was a ghost. Seriously, Magus followed Nanase to France? Yes, that ties together the tale Magus is telling, but, honestly, doesn't it scream retcon? Why would Magus focus on Nanase at all almost two years before Ellen would be created? If Elliot was already dating Nanase, maybe, but was Elliot even going to Greg's dojo then? And if Nanase was going steady with Elliot that far back, where does that leave room for all of Nanase's G-team boyfriends?
  17. Story: Wed Nov 22 2017

Let's not assume that in a universe with magic, magic isn't part of every human. We've never seen Sirleck use anything like a spell yet, so it seems reasonable to assume he's never had a host with usable magic, or a host who isn't entirely a native of the Moperverse.
  18. Story: Wed Nov 22 2017

It could be Second Life Ellen. The Second Life universe could have different magic than the Moperverse. Sirleck may not be able to sense Ellen's consciousness because of that difference.
  19. Story: Wed Nov 22 2017

It occurs to me that maybe Sirleck is outnumbered. Ellen has two personalities blended together inside her, the one based on Elliot and the one based on Second-Life Ellen. Maybe this also will apply to Magus; Elliot does have those three alter-egos that are quite different. Raise your hand if you'd like to see Heidi taking over.
  20. Story: Wed Nov 22 2017

More like a side effect. Mood-altering drugs come with them, so why not mood-altering spells? Extreme honesty has been a feature of Ashley's from the beginning, and also courage. Remember, she was running toward the center of the mall, exactly the opposite from what Elliot told her to do so she would be safe. Telling Magus and especially Sirleck the Vampire she hoped they would die horrible deaths if they didn't leave Elliot and Ellen safe fits both of those qualities. And I don't think it's an accident Dan didn't have Ashley say anything about her own safety.
  21. Story: Wed Nov 22 2017

Ah, probably not. Susan explains to Nanase later that Tedd suspects Nanase never had the extra pheromones. And now we know that Magus used the magic he learned from Pandora to with Tedd's TF gun before he fired it on Elliot.
  22. Story: Wed Nov 22 2017

And now for something that's almost certainly a retcon, but might be a good one. Remember this page? This is the very first time Susan is shown being attracted to anyone. Could Magus have had something to do with this?
  23. Story: Wed Nov 22 2017

Let's just assume that Elliot told Ashley at some point that the boy--or at any rate the person--with the purple hair who was sitting with Susan and Sarah was Tedd and that Tedd was a good friend. It is also possible that Ashley actually knew who Tedd was before her first appearance since Elliot hangs around Tedd at the school they all go to. But it is interesting Magus would assume Ashley knows who Tedd is. Helen and Demetrius don't let their guard down very often.

Self-evident. Unless the parliament is Danish.

Otto von Bismarck said that one is better off not knowing how two things are actually made: sausages, and laws.
