To be fair, Armstrong has always maintained that he said the "a" but it got lost in the static and transmission to Earth. I've heard stranger things happen with radio.

I suspect Susan would approach the Ice Bucket Challenge the same way Sir Patrick Stewart did.
  3. Story Wednesday July 18, 2018

As for muscle memory, there are studies that show that athletes who sit and visualize their actions over and over get at least a measurable chunk of the improvement that compatriots get rehearsing the same moves physically. It might not be *all* that they'd need to do, but it would help! Especially if Sarah is the only one who can alter the "reality" of the simulation, and everyone else has to obey the laws of physics....

Yes, and I addressed that in the part of my post you didn't quote:

Drowning, maybe not, but suffocation is definitely a problem with anything soft enough to sink into but not thick enough to swim in. That was actually one of the nastier, more embarassing ways for a GM to kill off a party of adventurers -- instead of spikes or water, have your trap door drop them into a giant vat of whipped cream! Snow generally doesn't get that deep in Chicagoland. Except where it's been piled up by plows, in which case it's a jumble of ice, broken-off cement or concrete, salt, sand, and compacted (and thus hardened) snow. Not something you want to fall onto. "Gehrman Labs" is the proper name of a business, a singular entity, so the proper construction is "Gehrman Labs is in Moperville." You might then follow by saying, "There are several Gehrman labs which are scattered throughout the suburbs," in which case "Gehrman" is a shortening of the proper name, and the lower-case "labs" is referring to multiple separate facilities, thus taking the plural form "are."

Which brings us back to the question of where the heck Les Immortels were! We saw Pandora and Zeus at the mall, which is where the Aberrations were who were meant to be drawing away Elliot's protectors, but we never saw either of them there, even when Pandora's spell took effect. Wherever they were, they were forced to enter the mortal plane and cast the Aberration-killing spell. So where were they, and what was more important to them than six Aberrations? Could he? We don't know if he could die while in that plane of existence and in that incorporeal form. We also don't know that any Immortal would be so obliging as to kill him, either; most of them seem to be more interested in tormenting him. Finding someone willing to kill him would pose most of the same problems as finding someone willing to help him.

It is quite possible to have an interesting story with fascinating, well-rounded characters without there being a "Bad Guy" at all.

Bulls and cows are great for indoor pranks, because they're fairly willing to go up stairs, but almost impossible to get to go down stairs. Especially in the days before elevators and ADA access, this meant you could lead a cow up to, say, the Dean's office, leave them fresh water and hay, and make good your escape, long before the Dean or their staff arrives in the morning....

Prof, you have my heartfelt sympathies. One of the manifestations of my sister's lupus was a vasculitis that caused the tip of her little toe to turn black and fall off. She said if you're going to lose a body part, a toe is probably the one she'd choose, but it's still pretty scary. Just know that it doesn't automatically mean you're going to get disassembled bit by bit -- I know that thought will have gone through your head, that this is just the start, but it is not a slippery slope you're sliding down. It's just a toe. These days, she jokes about, "This little piggy got beheaded...." :-)

I don't think that's original to that poster, as I've been hearing it and others like it for decades now. :-) Dogs come when you call. Cats have answering machines and may get back to you later. To dogs, you're part of the family. To cats, you're part of the staff. Centuries ago, cats were worshipped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this.

Hmm, I know I've been the main advocate of Pandora going to college with Sarah, but it occurs to me there is another option.... ...she could teach at Sarah's college. About magic. Hey, if it's going public, what school wouldn't jump at the chance to have a genuine Immortal teaching about this brand new, exciting field? Heck, Pandora can shape-shift, she could do both!

"Because it's not a game, Kate. This is a scale model of war. Every war ever fought right there in front of you. Because it's always the same. When you fire that first shot, no matter how right you feel, you have no idea who's going to die. You don't know who's children are going to scream and burn. How many hearts will be broken! How many lives shattered! How much blood will spill until everybody does what they were always going to have to do from the very beginning -- sit down and talk! Listen to me, listen. I just -- I just want you to think. Do you know what thinking is? It's just a fancy word for changing your mind." -The Doctor, as played by Peter Capaldi

Hmmm....do we really, 100% know that Les Immortals didn't swap? We saw an elderly male and an elderly female, and then we saw a young male and a young female, but we didn't see which one turned into which one! ;-) :-D

Conversely, if you have much smaller numbers than your enemy, an even exchange is a definite failure, and anything less than proportional damage is unsustainable. If you're outnumbered twenty to one, you'd better take out at least twenty-one for every one you lose, or there won't be any of you left to be the victors.
  17. Story Monday July 9, 2018

Not exactly. For any given gene which is different between fairies and humans, each elf parent will have one Fairy copy and one human copy. When those genes are passed on to offspring, they may pass on the fairy gene or the human gene, or perhaps some recombination of both. So, just by random chance, it's possible for someone who is an elf-elf cross to happen to get the fairy gene more often than the human one from one parent, and again to get more fairy genes than human genes from the other parent. The rule of large numbers means that they are most likely to get about an equal mix from each parent, but it is random, so outliers are possible. So, if you get 60% fairy genes and 40% human genes from mom, and 60% fairy genes and 40% human genes from dad, you'll theoretically end up 60% fairy and 40% human. It's even more complicated when dominant versus recessive genes come into play. You get two copies of each gene, one from each parent, so some will be both copies human, some will be both copies fairy, and some will be one of each. If, say, fairy genes are always dominant over human genes, then you could effectively get an even higher percent fairy in the gene expression. And don't get me started on partial dominance and epigenetics and all the other complications....

For me it was The Transformers, not the current live-action movies but the original animated series. I actually started with a high school friend convincing me to see Transformers: The Movie, which starred Leonard Nimoy as an insane robot, Eric Idle as a pile of junk, and Orson Welles (in his last movie role) as a planet. The show was very popular at my high school, it being what was on when we all got home. And it was a nerd school, that helped. Oh, and the original G. I. Joe cartoons, too, those two shows kinda went together.

"BLARGH, I say. BLARGH." Yeah, that's about how I feel about CCG in general. It wouldn't be so bad if you could jump right in to play, it's having to pay for a whole bunch of cards you don't want, just on the hopes you might get one you do want.

Yup, I do like that to the Pokemon, fights are just play. That's how most working dogs view their "jobs," from taking down bad guys to finding trapped people or bodies or drugs. It's all a game to them!
