I'm on my iPad. I haven't yet investigated AdBlock or equivalents on iOS.

Make sure when you leave your one-star-only-because-I-can't-give-zero review on these sites, that you tell them exactly why they deserve sucky ratings. Other patients will be forewarned, and it's just possible that their failings with you will be more likely to be addressed. Just remember, a bad outcome alone could just be medicine not being perfect. It's how you were treated that's important here.

Wow, does that site have a lot of video ads trying to play! Do they assume everyone has optical connections now? Me, I'm hoping whenever it is Pandora resets, she'll turn into the college-student-persona from "Marker" and end up roommates with Sarah and Grace. :-)

I've said for a while now, I think once the shooting is over, if Magus gets a chance to explain his situation to the main characters, they'll be only too happy to help. Given how everyone was afraid Mr. Verres would want to lock up Ellen, and he wound up helping them integrate her into the family as a twin sister instead, I suspect if Edward learns Magus's problem and the potential solution, he'll be willing to allow access to the Dewitchery Diamond, so long as he's convinced there's nothing nefarious at play any more. The only real way I can see for Magus to explain himself is either using Box as a translator, which would be a bit clunky, or if he has gotten into Elliot's body and has at least enough control to speak with them using Elliot's voice. I can definitely see Elliot allowing Magus to speak, and taking back control to ask questions and such. This is mostly a happy, cooperative, good bunch of people, I expect them to continue to be so.

Which I didn't know when I posted, since that's split up among several threads and this was the first section I came to.

Wow, I had only just learned about there being a Unicode for the Vulcan Salute, after a minor WikiWalk, and had it in my copy-paste ready to post here. Then I go to check today's comics, and discussions thereof....and discover that the boards won't post the unicode symbol. From Wikipedia: "in June 2014 it was added to version 7 of the Unicode standard as U+1F596 RAISED HAND WITH PART BETWEEN MIDDLE AND RING FINGERS."

I suspect Pandora is feeling very vulnerable right now. That's probably as much a factor in her appearing as a child right now as is the fact that Sarah only knows her in this form so far. Do Tara and Andrea know anything about how such things work on our half of the world? If even the Immortals have (deliberately) forgotten, how likely is it that it would stay forgotten if other species spill the beans so easily? Then again, we don't even know how often there's communication between the two halves of the world.....is this a weekly occurrence, or once a year, or once a decade?

Well, this is new. I've developed a sore spot to the side of the outer edge of my big toe's toenail. It does not seem to be an ingrown nail, as the end-of-toe edge of the nail is exposed all the way across, no sharp edges or buried corners. The redness and bulge are more toward the base of the nail. The skin there is a bit reddish, varying to purplish, and there has been some bleeding in one spot between the skin and the nail. It started Sunday, I think, and wearing shoes at work Monday wasn't too bad but it was more sore by the end of the day. I felt around and when I press the side just wrong it sometimes does feel like a sharp pain. I pulled off the scab/dried blood Tuesday after soaking it, and it seemed like there might have been a sliver so I did a very brief test fishing under the edge with a clean instrument, but did not find anything I could grab hold of. I kept my shoes off Tuesday, wore flip-flops, and it did seem less sore. Yesterday, I had work, and that means close-toed shoes, so I wore my sneakers, which have a pretty big toe box (I can wiggle them comfortably), but by the end of the day the toe was more sore. I went home to get my flip-flops before coming back to do my charts. This morning I wore sandals with a band-aid covering the sore spot, which my boss did indeed notice and comment on. After soaking my toe at lunch, I have improvised some padding around the base of the toe to keep the nail edge from rubbing or getting pressure against it. So far, wearing shoes seems to be working. There was one slightly wortying thing; there is now a very small red bump protruding from the edge between nail and skin. In a horse I'd call it "proud flesh" but I don't know if they use that in humans. Could be an overexhuberant attempt at healing. *Sigh* Now I get to decide whether to call my PCP or to try to see a podiatrist directly....

Aww, nobody picked up on the reference... Coach: Pick a number. Caulfield: "Anything Goes" by Cole Porter. Coach: A number number! Caulfield: Avogadro's number. Coach: A number between one and ten! Caulfield: Pi. (Proof Caulfield would make a good genie ;-)

Is it all prime numbers removed? Edit: Whoops, didn't see the next page was there. Good to know I was right! :-)

    "Anything Goes" by Cole Porter!
  13. Story Wednesday June 14, 2017

Two things catch my attention here. "They were his" means multiple kids, but also uses the past tense. And exactly why do Immortals consistently choose to lie to future selves about this matter?
  14. NP Monday June 12, 2017

Uh, Grace? This is Dan you're talking to. Perhaps a more effective threat would be, "We won't playfully tickle Ellen until our demands are met!"

  16. Things that make you worried.

Lots of reasons a cat could be losing weight. You mentioned flea-borne tapeworms, but there's also a type carried in prey like mice. There's also roundworms and such. Is he ever outside, or is he strictly indoors? Any change in how much he's drinking and peeing? Does he feel like he's getting thinner? Over three pounds should make a noticable difference. Evo is a good low-carb diet, from what I've heard; could he have been a bit heavy, and getting to a healthier weight?

If you plant a face, what does it grow? Or do you plant face seeds and grow a face plant from them?
  18. Things that make you go WTF

Some days, I think back on how into computers I was as a grade schooler, how I knew everything there was to know about BASIC (or at least everything in an eight or ten volume series on it), and wonder what it would be like if I had pursued that interest, instead of the critters. I see discussions of Linux or see Raspberry Pi and bitsbox.com ads, and wonder if it wouldn't be great to pick it back up again and learn how to use all these fun toys. Then I read complaints like this one, and think perhaps I made the right choice, letting someone else do the coding. ;-)

I don't think Sarah has enough info yet to guess at Adrian having anything specific to do with Box. At most, I can see her asking if she knows Mr. Raven, following with whether she knows his parent(s), but I think something would have to bring him to mind for the subject to be broached. Sarah is showing how perceptive she is, as well as how kind. It reflects well on her. :-)

Hooray! I suspect it will be a small but marked improvement in your life beyond just making showers a bit easier. Gear like that tends to evolve and improve over time. Then again, Okabashi has never made a pair of sandals since that fit nearly as well as the first pair I got from them.... K-wires! Flashbacks to classes on orthopedic surgery there. How to put back together a shattered wing or foreleg, not human toes, but most of the equipment is the same or similar. :-) Cool! May this be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, not to mention great pain control. Do what all the kids are doing these days -- watch Colbert, he'll summarize for you and make you laugh doing it! Well, the spoiler tag and link buffers were doubtless a kindness for those sensitive to such things. They do make me recall how my dad's many medical appointments included the trimming of his toenails. They'd gotten thick, although his feet were wrapped up when I was visiting so I only know what my mom told me. You should ask them about whether they can shorten that sucker safely. Okay, that gets me a little bit closer to squick than the images did. I know in my head that it was likely for the best, but squick isn't always logical.

Why not reverse that? Make it the skinny that are penalized and stigmatized for a change!
  22. Story Wednesday June 7, 2017

Perhaps appearing facing away, or with her eyes scrunched closed? It would still startle but not invade privacy as much. Of course, Pandora probably would think it silly. She's the one who made the doctor analogy. She can observe you unseen at any time, why should she have to announce when she's going to let you know she's there?
  23. On culture appropriation

Hmm, I think that has the potential to end up very human-centric/human-chauvanist, but with a truly mixed-species crew it might work. Another option would be to divide it into broad categories, such as Mammalian vs Reptilian vs Dinosaurian, etc. Vets already have specialties like Avian, Reptile and Amphibian, and Small Mammal (non dog and cat, eg hamsters, ferrets, bunnies). Getting additional certifications could mean a small amount of info on a large number of categories, or knowing one other type almost as well as your own species but knowing zippo about any others. I do think there's a huge difference between working on sentient vs non-sentient patients, so you should keep the profession of Veterinarian but most likely players wouldn't have much reason to choose it. If there's a sick critter, they can either bring in a Vet or they can take a significant penalty for not knowing what to do with a patient who can't describe symptoms or follow instructions; critical failure would result in injury to patient, MD, holders, or all three. More likely for an MD to harm a sparrow and to be harmed by a cow, but anything with a mouth can bite, not to mention talons, horns, and good strong kicks with tough sharp-edged hooves! Heck, rabbits have been known to break their own backs struggling, and a sick bird could die of stress just being picked up to examine.... Rather like how vampires are handled here, then? Some have to drink someone dry nightly, others a few swallows from a cow will do nicely for a week. Some can turn into bats, wolves, mist. Some disintegrate with a stake through the heart, others can revive centuries later if some fool pulls the stake out of their skeletal remains. The original Dracula, Harker first spots Dracula in England at the zoo in the middle of the afternoon; many Hollywood vampires burst into flame at the slightest touch of sunlight, or even UV lamps. Just make sure you avoid the equivalent of making them sparkle.

You're saying statistics is a carp shoot! Don't forget about the Sacred Band of Thebes, they could beat the Spartans by flinging Holy Carp.

Heh. Maybe TOH can let the rest of us hit his wish list on your behalf. I'll send whatever support your way I can. I've seen some awfully good medicine come out of universities. Here's hoping yours is full of the best, brightest, and most experienced!
