At least they aren't starting off killing rats in the basement of the inn.  I've used worse plot hooks than "stolen chickens".

Are we certain the chicken was stolen?  It may have flown the coop.  

There is a lot of background to be established.  There are even more investigative questions to be asked.

How much are they being offerd for the bird's return?  Is the mayor insane?  What is so unusual about this feathered friend?  Why did the chicken coop have two doors?

Interesting that Ellen has picked up on the rift in motivation between Gary and Rich. And "Prize Winning Chicken" is inspired--there's so much you could do with that, even is she did pick it in a panic.

I am wondering if this is a prize winning live chicken, or a prize winning cooked chicken. It could also be a prize winning chicken surrogate, a painting perhaps; seems unlikely, though.

Now I'm hungry for chicken. Maybe I'll hit an Indian restaurant.
