NP Comic for Saturday, June 25, 2022

So what is Dan setting up here? George querying Nanase about magic? Because she is Ellen's girlfriend, or because he suspects Nanase of also having magical abilities? -
Particularly if he casts this spell a lot. Which he may, what a useful spell for someone in Ed's line of work.

Dwight's in a bad position. He left his post, apparently with what he sees as good reason, but probably without permission, perhaps against orders. We don't know how much his boss values initiative over blind obedience, but taking the initiative always looks better if it all turns out well. That, for Dwight, that seems to mean Liam and Virginia back to their side of the world, him back at his post, and reporting a serious crime that needs investigating, pronto. "Pronto" does not seem to be Liam's priority at all.

Have Spacesuit, Will Travel by Robert Heinlein really influenced me, not just toward what are now called STEM studies, but towards valuing education in general. -

I watched Mr. Wizard. Don Herbert is one of the people who inspired me to choose science as a career. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that Bill Nye watched him, too. -
This sparks a thought: Is Magic the same entity on both sides of the world? Is it, perhaps, in hope of making sense of the persons it is handing power to, running an experiment? Operating openly on one side, and in secret on the other to find out what works better, for whatever its definition of "better" might be?
-
Like it was a person... Tell me, is Magic here right now?
-
Oh, sure, make her lose a couple of days....
-
Now I want baseball cake. I don't even know what that would be, but I want some. I also want to know what Liam was actually thinking. An obviously Yes, but the natives have been getting restless.

I admit to considerable impatience on the return of Tara and Andrea, but it has long been my hope that we would see more than a glimpse of the EGS multiverse--preferably through the eyes of one of the Main Eight Nine... however many we're up to now. It seems unlikely that Mr. Verres would approve of Elliot and/or Grace taking a quick trip to Griffinstan, especially with whatever intrigue going on just now, but I'll settle for knowing that there is intrigue. At least for a while. I doubt it. The blockage seems to have been a major problem on their side. Andrea's investigation may be big news. Even if it isn't, it's not too odd that a guard would be told why he was granting her passage.

Wow. They are a lot of fun, but $72 seems a bit much. If you can find a cheaper source, I recommend starting with The Eyre Affair. It sets up her universe, which changes a bit from book to book (for reasons I don't want to spoil), but the basic conceit remains.

There's a Thursday Next story in there, somewhere.
-
The second quote (which I am definitely stealing) answers the first question. I note that Dwight seems to be having a similar revelation. Both of them are young--Elliot, at least, is much younger than I am, and I still get the occasional reality check. My suspicion is that that will keep happening until my neural pathways fossilize. In Elliot's defense, many people need a lot more nudging--or hammering-- to come to this sort of epiphany.

A And yet, clearly remembered well enough in Griffinstan that it fuels prejudice to this day. Curious, something is off on one side of the world or the other. Have repeated resets of Magic inadvertently caused such a loss of records on our side that even the existence of Uryoums, much less their attempted coup, been forgotten? Was it in fact, inadvertent? Alternatively, has memory of the attempted conquest been artificially maintained on the other side to preserve a system of royalty?
-
This strip is giving me flashbacks to speculations we had about Tedd being Ashley's onetime online girlfriend.
-
Thousands of years ago, just like the side of the world we're used to. Coincidence, or did Uryoum refugees from the other side side try again on this side? Was this lost to history because Magic keeps rebooting on this side?
-
My head canon frequently misses the target.
-
In my head canon, Uryuoms are the Sea People who precipitated the fall of the Mediterranean civilization.
-
So do I. The only attempt we know about on our side of the world coincided with the collapse of the Bronze Age. But Edward's whole career is based around looking for security threats; this has to have him thinking.
-
A friend of mine is fond of talking about "B-movie scenarios," meaning schemes that probably would only work out in bad movies. One of these is the idea of "sleeper agents" who maintain their cover for years, arranging to get placed in situations where they can gather intelligence, commit sabotage, or otherwise discomfit the other side. Whether Lavender is such an agent or not, the thought has to cross Edward's mind.
-
The look of surprise on Edward's face makes me wonder how or if this new information will affect his relationship with Lavender.
-
Wow, talk about suspicions confirmed.
-
Here. Hooray! Edward is conscious and standing on his own (I hope). Also, who threw the fireball he just caught?

Ashley is a bit fixated on Grace right now. I can't say I blame her.
