    It sounds truly amazing.

Fair. Have you considered getting a custom sarcophagus-shaped pad of memory foam?

"Our old mess sergeant's taste buds were shot off in the war. But his savory collections add to our Esprit de Corps To think of all the marvelous ways they're using plastics nowadays It makes a fellow proud to be a soldier." -- Tom Lehrer, "An Evening Wasted"

In the Danish Army this seemed to vary wildly. In Boot Camp the cafeteria seemed desperate to live up to the name because it mostly served boiled boots with mushy shoestrings. When I later transferred to the Infirmary of the 1st Logistics Battalion, the food at the local cafeteria proved to be quite decent and at times rather good. At least it was a significant improvement on boiled boots.

Don't you mean four thousand years ago, Pharaoh? Presumably it was the gymnastics team during Queen Hatshepsut's reign. I remember there was a huge scandal because they weren't invited to participate in the Olympics. Rude of the Olympics to only start almost eight centuries later.

I think that Bishop's father just didn't do a very good job of being a proper father. Then again, from her looks I also assume that her father was Emperor Ming.

    No. Thanks

King Batman the First of the House of Wayne.
  9. NP Comic Thursday January 20, 2022

    Exactly! I love this video.
  10. NP Comic Thursday January 20, 2022

I saw a slow motion video of a squirrel being flung from a low powered catapult trap towards a net. You could see it predict where it would land and adapt to its trajectory in mid air. It was bloody impressive. I guess that is what a few hundred thousand years of determined evolution will do for you.
  11. So, is JKR a transphobe?

There was recently an argument in the comics forum as to whether J. K. Rowling is a transphobe or not. I believe the tumblr post linked here can satisfactorily answer that. https://caelonaut.tumblr.com/post/673681036975161344/cal-frezi https://cRowling is a transphobe. Period.
  12. So, is JKR a transphobe?

To be fair to him, Danes are, well, Danes. 1) We probably deserve a lot of crap, and 2) we don't give a shit because people who criticize us aren't Danes and so they don't count.
  13. So, is JKR a transphobe?

What really bugged me was how Harry was all against the exploitation of nonhumans and had a GOLDEN opportunity to end it and didn't take it. He needed the Sword of Gryffindor. He had just saved the wandmaker Mr. Ollivander. What do you think the goblins would have said if he offered them a chance to have a couple apprentices taught by Mr. Ollivander in return for the Sword? In effect, permanently ending the human monopoly on wand magic? It would have been a huge step towards more equality AND a huge fuck you to the Ministry of Magic. And he wouldn't have had to cheat on his deal with the goblins that way.
  14. So, is JKR a transphobe?

My grandmother despised Wagner. Not because of Hitler, she just didn't like his music. She swore blind that the reason he would have some sort of loud crescendo every fifteen minutes was in order to wake up the audience after it had fallen asleep.

On the other hand, Batman has already taken that prep time for every single New God plus all of them in varying combinations. Unfortunately for Elliot, he is not really Batman caliber yet.
  16. What are you reading?

But at least it is also very likely to be the last Bad Day you will ever have.
  17. So, is JKR a transphobe?

The Moderator: This is a current political issue and as such belongs in the politics thread. Please do not bring it up or debate it in the regular posts.
  18. So, is JKR a transphobe?

I agree. Shakespeare was an obvious anti-Semite, for example. H. P. Lovecraft was extremely racist. And so forth. However, there is an important difference between them and JKR, namely that she is alive and politically active in our present day and time. She is a supporter of a hate group and continues to produce and help disperse transphobic propaganda. That makes her far more dangerous and an issue that needs to be continuously addressed and watched. Shakespeare, on the other hand, may safely remain in the field of literary analysis.
  19. What are you reading?

I played the first edition of it and really liked it. It did have certain balance issues, mind you. I recall being charged by ten Russian mercenaries and throwing a WP grenade at them in desperation. Nine of them went down and the tenth looked like he was reconsidering his options.
  20. Comic for Wednesday January 19, 2022

You largely have it. Add in that Orion has fought Superman to a standstill and has a really bad temper, and that Big Barda is a powerhouse on a level with Wonder Woman, and I think that is all the detail you need.
  21. Comic for Wednesday January 19, 2022

Elliot isn't an idiot. He must feel a bit like a street level superhero headed for a diplomatic meeting with temperamental representatives of the New Gods. Like, Orion and Big Barda.
  22. Comic for Monday January 17, 2022

I understand she is currently on a vacation sharing the company of an old friend of hers who is also a Librarian and has an undeniable liking for bananas.
  23. The Weather.

It may be because I came straight from the What are you reading thread but I just got reminded of a pretty good post-apocalyptic sci fi book that followed a doomsday prepper family. One part of their preparations included a huge supply of toilet paper in a carefully protected room. Then the balloon went up and it was every man for himself and the Devil take the hindmost. They spent the first part of the book on a boat and survived offshore by fishing and the supplies stored on the boat. But when they finally found their hidden supply dump, there was a small problem. It had sustained damage somehow and as a result the TP room had gotten half flooded. You can imagine what the toilet paper looked like. The poor prepper family stared at this indescribable mess and were all basically "FML."
  24. So, is JKR a transphobe?

Forgive me for disagreeing, but I do not think anyone needs to justify either their rejection or acceptance of JKR's work. It is an individual decision and each person is free to make it on their own. I made the decision to reject JKR on the basis of my mental health; I decided to not keep reminders around of someone who considers me mentally deranged and a danger to society. Others may reject her on a different basis and still others might decide to keep her books because they are still good entertainment for them. None of these decisions are inherently right or wrong. What is important is to openly acknowledge the problematic parts of her works and recognizing her blatant hostility towards trans men and women. If you remain aware of this, you can challenge these ideas when her books present them to you and not allow them a potentially easy foothold by just letting them pass. Defending JKR and saying "Oh, she didn't really mean to be transphobic" is basically trans erasure and supporting transphobia. I am actually sad that I had to let these books go. I used to like them. But so be it. It is unfortunate that JKR has decided to dedicate a large part of her life to hate; she could be spending it in so many better and healthier ways.

Exactly my point. If they are in a hurry, they can rent a bicycle.
