  1. This Day In History

Or maybe it is just very hard to get a job as anarchist. Imagine the job interview. "So what is your previous job experience, sir?" "Ah... none. I haven't actually done any professional anarchism. I've only engaged in amateur anarching so far." "And precisely what is it you do?" "Um. I blow random things up to frighten people. Try and kill authority figures to make society break down. Vandalise important landmarks and memorials." "I see. And precisely how is it that any of this is supposed to help our company sell its product?" "Ah..." All in all, it is small wonder that most anarchists remained unemployed. I'm not really sure I would want one working for me, either.
  2. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Blech. This is all too common when hospitals get caught up in stupid procedures. My dad, who is an M. D., has spent many years working on improving and standardising all sorts of procedures to reduce the likelihood of this sort of mess happening.
  3. This Day In History

This is correct. Bipartisan driving is a BAD idea.

"Every so often the city of Ankh-Morpork would burn down to the ground, and the inhabitants would then cheerfully rebuild it with the traditional materials of dry, tarred wood." -- Terry Pratchett
  7. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Good Lord. I'm glad you at least survived all that.
  8. Story Wednesday August 29, 2018

That's the prosecutor's job. In that situation I would rather shoot the attacker and accept the consequences than let a child get killed.
  9. Story Wednesday August 29, 2018

Someone attacking a child with lethal intent and you stepping in to stop them? I think it would, or some variation thereof.
  10. Story Wednesday August 29, 2018

Ah, that explains why I misunderstood it. In the sense I have normally seen it used, 'pre-emptive' is more used in the sense of "We know they are going to attack someday so we are going to attack now in order to get in the first punch." I am not sure if it is the best word for it, but 'voluntarily' seems close in the sense that she chose to attack now of her own free will rather than flee and be forced to defend herself later. 'Counterattack' covers it better but I have never seen it used as an adjective or adverb. *scratches head*
  11. Story Wednesday August 29, 2018

Hence why I used the term 'might', as I agree with your reasoning here. Mind you, I would question whether it may really be called 'pre-emptive' when the monster is already attacking people in the area openly and would unquestionably get around to attacking Susan and Diane sooner or later if not stopped. If it at the time had just been floating peacefully around wearing a sandwich board proclaiming "Flying Snake Monsters Are People Too", 'pre-emptive' might have been more appropriate. ...how a snake would wear a sandwich board? Er... I... ...a wizard did it, okay? Using magic, so I don't have to explain anything.
  12. Story Wednesday August 29, 2018

True, but her action might justly be described as selfless in this case.
  13. Story Wednesday August 29, 2018

That there is more to her than is generally known, yes. Mind you, I feel that 'selfless and cool' is setting the bar rather high -- it is possible to not be selfless and still be a quite decent person. I note this because Diane is not selfless and in fact can be rather selfish -- but this is not the same as being solely focused on oneself, as Diane also showed. I also note that if you have had bad experiences trusting others, it becomes easier to be selfish. I am not ready to condemn Diane on that basis though I do note she has room for some improvement.
  14. This Day In History

Fortunately we have such things as big showy churches that are potentially perfect shelters but will not accommodate flood refugees because that might get dirt on their magnificent tax-exempt floors.

  16. What Are You Watching?

    Who? Is? Number? None?
  17. This Day In History

Nonsense. If they had really been serious they wouldn't have sent Captain James Cook on the Endeavour. They would have sent Captain James Kirk on the Enterprise. And here I thought it was Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, Batman.
  18. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

I absolutely agree, so I sent him a fruit basket that would be all eaten up in a few days.
  19. I. Am. Baffled. Let me get one thing straight. I fully see the need for bot protection for important and sensitive pages, especially bank pages and the like. And I do not object to it. What I do not get is why you would need bot protection on a page with a bill that you need to pay. Why? Is there some sort of problem with rogue bots paying your bills without telling you? I just don't get it.
  20. Things That Make You Happy

I now have a mental image of a cat finishing off mice with a big hammer. This makes me happy.
  21. This Day In History

Unfortunately for them, this was not good enough to protect them from Janeway.
  22. Things that you find baffling

Uncomfortable. VERY uncomfortable. As in 'the best saddle in the world may not be good enough' uncomfortable.
