Not at all! Here, Circe, have a cookie!
  2. Questions for Q&A 8

Really? Grace just said 'marked by an Immortal', not 'marked by a specific Immortal.' And we know that not all the Marks came from the same Immortal. I'm afraid I can't really see that.
  3. Things You Only Noticed On Reread

You need look no further than to the Girl Genius world to see an example of this. EVERY domain in Europe that is still politically stable is ruled by Sparks. Ordinary people are simply no match for Sparks of any strength. Too, Sparks are the only ones with the power to keep their domains safe from what is left in the wastelands after the Long War. A sufficiently powerful Spark can easily create machines or breed monsters that can crush entire armies. In short, the Sparks rule the world. Admittedly they do not rule it very well, but that's an entirely different issue.

Really? It is also known that Pandora was not the only one marking people. Why would Grace only be able to see Marks left by Pandora?
  5. Story, Wednesday March 7, 2018

It is like some of the current political dialogue. Nazis advocate that Jews, genderqueer people, the disabled and people of colour should all be exterminated to preserve the purity of the human race. Jews, genderqueer people, the disabled and people of colour all want to be not exterminated and to live in peace. And thoughtful individuals not personally threatened by the Nazis are of the opinion that a middle ground should be found yet strangely the targets of the Nazis do not agree. The world is truly strange.

But... but then he won't ever meet his Madamleck so they can have their happily ever after I wonder what they might read. "Battlefront 2 Loot Box." "Stored by request of Pandora*, please return unopened." *The actual one, not one of the 243243243423423 Immortals calling themselves that. A sign reading "This side up", right at the bottom. "Do Not Open On Any Account. No Really Don't. We Mean It. We Are Serious. Don't Come Afterwards And Tell Us We Didn't Warn You." "Odd tape containing 18½ minutes of some guy named Richard rambling about how much he hates stuff." And so forth.
  7. Which Moper Are You?

Taking up all of a good thing so there is nothing left for the others present is obnoxious. Think about it.
  8. Story Friday 9, March 2018

I increasingly suspect Sirleck of planning to hijack Magus as soon as he is actually split off from Elliot.

By that time the melting pot will have become a freezing pot anyway.
  10. Les XXIIIes Jeux olympiques d'hiver

It need not be a bad thing. It may serve as both a helpful reminder of the value of humility as well as a spur to do better.
  11. Les XXIIIes Jeux olympiques d'hiver

My wife was born with spina bifida due to her father getting poisoned with Agent Orange in Vietnam. She has never been able to walk without crutches. She loves to swim, has had fun skiing and she has spent so much time being invisible in society that it immensely cheers her whenever society recognises the disabled as human beings who can accomplish great things. Which is not even nearly as common as it should be. I'm sorry, old friend, but I find I can endure your depression over this with great fortitude when I think of how little else society leaves for disabled people. You can see, walk, possibly even run and even if you will never be Olympic level you can still become good at them if you practice. Better than you are now, that is for sure. Feel content with that, and spare a thought for my wife and many others who will never be able to something we take so much for granted as being able to... see, walk and run.
  12. Which Moper Are You?

That may happen yet. Patience. I was well past thirty by the time I finally met my wife-to-be, a magnificent and brilliant woman who continues to inspire me every day of my life. A word of advice: once you find that one, tell them. It will be worth it. Pffft. Comedy is all well and good but it is not the be all end all. Obnoxiousness is.
  13. What Are You Watching?

In my opinion one should not allow judgments of that kind to influence what one enjoys, nor attempt to impose them on others. If one finds 'cheesy' enjoyable, make the most of it. I personally find it far more pleasant that way rather than watching something supposedly 'cultural' solely so one may later look down one's nose at the less sophisticated hoi polloi that surrounds one. There are forms of entertainment that are not to my taste but as long as I may freely avoid them they do not really worry me. More power to those who do enjoy them and I genuinely wish them all happiness from them.

I prefer to let Americans speak for the US system but I can with confidence state this of Denmark: misogyny is still alive and rampant, and so is racism. We have made some progress against the former, not so much against the latter. But in neither case is it simply a matter of 'clearing it out.' It is an ongoing struggle against a growth more like kudzu than merely mowing down corn. Every gain must be fought for and afterwards jealously guarded so we will not lose it again. Changing a society is a struggle of generations and lifetimes and sometimes the opposing forces tear deep chasms in the fabric that binds it together. *sigh*

Many of them actually have excellent self-control. Once they have a secure grip of power, some of them simply do not bother anymore. They figure that in most cases, displays of temper will be long forgotten by the time the next election rolls around. In other cases, temper is seen by some voters as a feature, not a bug. In their eyes it makes politicians seem manly and strong, unless of course they are women who if they lose their temper are instead deemed hysterical and weak. Similarly, a male politician who shouts is being firm whereas a female one is shrill. Misogyny has deep roots in the political system.

As long as it didn't turn into Itchy and Scratchy.
  17. Story, Wednesday March 7, 2018

That is highly manipulative but if done correctly can be very effective. People show more of their true nature when they are angry. It is one reason that insults, veiled or otherwise, are such a large part of politics. An angry opponent is not only more likely to make mistakes but also to unwittingly show personality facets they might have preferred to keep hidden.
  18. What Are You Watching?

Oh, I feel your pain. *sigh* Corny as the TV shows of my childhood were, I miss them, and they are not coming back. Even if they did, I would not recognise them today or get the same experience from them.

If it didn't do him any good, then it is entirely because he resisted the lesson she was teaching. I have been called out many a time myself. I find that when I pay attention, I always learn something. Very often about myself; always about the person doing the calling out. And since the latter part may apply to others as well -- possibly a great number of other people -- I find that to frequently be the more important part of the lesson.
  20. Which Moper Are You?

I think my avatar indicates which Moper I most closely identify with.
  21. Story, Wednesday March 7, 2018

Yeah, it really is too bad. It would do them a power of good.
  22. What Are You Watching?

Typically by redefining "She looked like she would have wanted it" into meaning "informed consent."
  23. Story, Wednesday March 7, 2018

Ouch. Yeah. It doesn't happen often to me but when it does it is bad. Really bad.
  24. I have just learned from Twitter that a US trans suicide hotline is now up and running. Its telephone number is: 877-565-8860. Please help make this known in any place you feel may need it.

They may want her present when Elliot-Magus is split into Elliot and Elliot-Magus. To, you know, help talk him down.
