  1. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Mrs. Prof almost chased me back to my primary care doctor yesterday. I had a coughing fit that just would not let up. A couple of cough drops with dextromethorphan in them helped briefly, as did lying down and napping, but vertical time was almost like whooping cough. No doctor's appointment yet, since I'm not running a fever, but I may go in next week if it doesn't cease and desist. No movement on the chest soreness issue. No movement is good news, as is no soreness. I guess I'm over that hurdle. Hydrocodone is problematic at the moment. I wound up taking it at 7:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m., and 11:00 p.m. yesterday. That's every eight hours, but I don't think it's what my doctor intended. Couldn't help it, though—my left ankle and knee pain (the main sources of my Chronic Pain Syndrome) got bad enough last night that I had to do something about it.

Thank you for your report, citizen. The Illuminati will be contacting you shortly. Please do not attempt to leave your domicile, as our snipers can drop you at any time. Have a nice day.
  3. What Are You Ingesting?

I looked at them, and whew! They are expensive! They're also geared to someone who is much more serious of a tea drinker than I am. I'm happy enough to get my hot water out of my Keurig machine after a rinse cycle, at 192°F, but they recommend 160° to 180°F for their Jasmine pearls. They also recommend using a lot more per cup than I'm using now, and at around $38 bucks a pop for a few ounces of dry stock, I think I'm gonna have to take a pass, lest Mrs. Prof take her vengeance out on me. Thanks for the recommendation, though! There may yet come a day when I might try it. My son and daughter-in-law are into tea. They might be persuaded to let an old man into a ceremony, as long as I don't have to sit seiza.

You live in one of the secret sausage Shangri-Las of the Americas. Recognize your luck in that matter.

I may have written all that music for ROTT, Duke Nukem 3D, Stargunner, and Shadow Warrior, but I'll let up a secret right here: I couldn't play for [censored]. I had to have the God Mode code to see everything in the game. Otherwise, I would never have been able to get a feel for the levels in order to come up with music for them.

You are stepping on my territory lady. I'm the one that Doesn't Do Video Games. :-) I'm Spartacus!
  7. Things That Are Just Annoying

Do you know what the threshold is between laparoscopic surgery and lithotripsy with natural passing afterward? Or is that even an option?
  8. Things You Find Amusing

Depends on how you're trying to stay "cool."
  9. Things That Are Just Annoying

Lithotripsy. Unfortunately, it's not 100% effective, and it's not for everyone. It's also supposed to work on gallstones, but I was told I wasn't a candidate. Found out why later: I had pigment stones instead of the larger cholesterol stones. Surgery is the only option for pigment stones. Besides, my gall bladder was close to bursting when I went to the emergency room.

Kind of the job description for entertainers. Politicians too, come to think of it, Arnie has been both. IT'S NOT A TWO-FER!
  11. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Had my MRI today. It was an "open" MRI, if you can call a machine that looks like a waffle iron "open." With my size, I barely fit between the two halves. Breathing was problematic, but I managed to make it through the 45-or-so minute procedure with some minor resistance to each breath. One thing that worries me is that I'm a bit sore in the area beneath (vertically below, not horizontally below) my sternum. I can't tell if it's a surface soreness or a deeper soreness. The worry comes from the fact that this is where my Greenfield IVC filter is located. It started getting sore in the last scan that they did—I swear I felt something moving in that area. Anyway, she told me that my filter is rated to withstand a magnetic field up to 3 Tesla, while her machine was only a 0.7 Tesla machine. She also said that I should go to the emergency room if anything further develops. Her opinion was that it was leftover soreness from the pressure I had when breathing. Like I said, I'm still a tad sore in that area, so I've warned Mrs. Prof to watch me for (abnormally) strange behavior, unresponsiveness, and the like. The followup for the MRI is slated for Friday. In the meantime, I'm going to see if I can fiddle with the CD they gave me to take to the doctor. Speaking of doctors, my primary care doctor is obviously weaning me off of the hydrocodone. My last fill was for one every six hours. I got a new scrip today for one every eight hours. I sure as hell hope the back doctor can do something about the back pain before my primary doctor takes me completely off of it, because the Tramadol I was on wasn't doing a damned thing for my back.
  12. Things That Are Just Annoying

You have my sympathies. I've never had to pass one, and based on your reporting, I'm damned glad I haven't had to. Question about an old wives' tale remedy - does cranberry juice help? I'd always assumed they gave it to you in post-op so that you don't suffer from Post Operative Urinary Retention (P.O.U.R. — that one I have had, and I have very few foes I would wish it upon).
  13. Things You Find Amusing

My son once asked Mrs. Prof and me to play Star Wars Trivial Pursuit, back when he was still in high school (I think) and a total Star Wars geek. He was absolutely sure he'd win. I gave him the absolute ass-whoopin' he deserved. You should have seen the look on his face when I won. It was priceless.

The Indycar Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Will Power just got a drive-through penalty for running over his air hose and tire changing gun on the way out of a pit stop.

Indycar season is back! The Grand Prix of St. Petersburg is underway! w00t!
  16. The Grammar Thread

Before you blow big bucks on Grammarly, might I recommend a look at Slick Write? On its face, it might look a bit basic, but that interface can be customized in any number of ways to catch almost any combination of errors. It's also got plugins for LibreOffice (and I think Firefox), and best of all, it's free. Additional: I used it to write the first draft of my novel. Very helpful.

Yeesh! Does it screw with your day?
  20. What Are You Ingesting?

Considering that a barrel of oil is going for approximately $51 a barrel, and that a barrel is 5,376 ounces, a barrel of Oolong jasmine tea would sell for $45,507.84 with the 30% discount I got at Teavana. I'd say that the Oolong jasmine outdoes Texas Tea by a wide margin. (see below) BTW, I tested whether or not you could really get 3 good cups out of one teaspoon of leaves. It's true—you can. I had to let the third cup steep an extra 30 seconds, but it was just a hair shy of tasting as good as the first cup. BTW part two: Teavana's link to the tea is here. I misread the invoice. It was actually $12.98 for 2oz, which makes a 5,376 ounce barrel worth $34,890.24. Still way more than a $51 barrel of oil.
  21. What Are You Ingesting?

I finally have true jasmine tea back in my life! Oolong and jasmine, bought from Teavana, mind you, but you wouldn't believe how hard it is to find the stuff elsewhere! Jasmine green tea is simple to find, as is jasmine Earl Grey, but not jasmine with nothing but tea leaves. My obsession dates back to somewhere between fourth and sixth grades, when my mother bought a tin of Twinings black tea with jasmine. I couldn't drink it hot, but I loved the smell of it and, once it cooled down enough, the taste. Must have been expensive as hell, because she wouldn't let me make it often. I had to settle for smelling it and looking at the jasmine buds that were scattered among it. It's still expensive—$16.93 for a 2oz. packet, and that's with a 30% discount. Fortunately, since it's a strong Oolong, I can steep the leaves three times. I've already made a cup. GOOD stuff!

You and I are approximately in sync. My sleep used to last only as long as I had Benadryl in me, which was good for about 4-5 hours. I would then wake up, raid the fridge, take another Benadryl, and it'd be off to sleep for another 4-5 hours. The Topamax and hydrocodone have been messing with that, though. They're making me drowsy all day long. My "nighttime" usually runs from midnight until around 6:30 a.m. now.

Oi! I take umbrage to that! /* swings umbrage at the sentence, but with no effect, the sentence now long gone */
