  1. Things You Find Amusing

There are a dozen Ibis walking across the yard in front of me, feeding as they go along What I find amusing is that they originally roosted on and around a lamp post on the other side of the parking lot Two of the birds stayed perched on top of the lamp post, while the rest slowly walked and pecked their way across the cold and hard lot, finding nothing as they went When the flock reached the other side of the lot and actually started eating things they found the the recently mowed grass, the two perched bids swooped down and joined the breakfast party Somehow, this seems like it should be a management motivational poster

Parents The eternal nemesis of Comics and other collectables Strange how Mom's collection of Salt & Pepper shakers, and Dad's collection bottle labels from all the beer varieties he drank in the Army were never in danger Just the kid's stuff was somehow vulnerable

It was so much easier when the Vikings just told the rest of us what to do And they had such a great recruiting song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTwq1_9VH68

https://egscomics.com/egsnp/parable-040 Just how many potions did our hero distribute?

Will someone please just zappa the Ashley? She needs to be transformed She needs to transform herself She needs to transform someone else And all these transformations need to be safe, without embarrassment, and reversible Otherwise, Ashley will never be able to relax Also, Yes Nanase, you are just entirely too cool I'm surprised that local glaciation isn't triggered when you and Susan are in the same room

When both were active, it would be rather difficult to say with certainty whether Stalin or Hitler was the worse hominid life form Stalin's reputation had the "benefit" of a decade of operating without Corporal Schicklgruber providing a counterpoint

https://egscomics.com/egsnp/parable-039 A Question for Anyone who has ever been the GameMaster of a Role Playing Game... How many times per game session do you need to do what Arthur did in this comic?
  8. NP Monday November 25, 2019

Yes I forgot about that But I tend to think of the Demotic script as a transitional phase into what would become the written form of the Coptic language Also, "Simplified" does not necessarily equate to "Shorthand"
  9. NP Monday November 25, 2019

As for shorthand in the era of classical antiquity... Shorthand note taking was a well developed art in Imperial Rome. There were as many lawyers per capita in that city as there are in modern cities. The Ampersand "&" is actually one of the survivors of Roman Shorthand, being derived from the Latin "et"

Assassination is actually a fiscally responsible way to manage an Empire First, you don't need to provide for your ruler's retirement (You might even be able to underwrite the cost of his state funeral by selling ad space and corporate naming rights) Second, you avoid the need for elaborate succession procedures If the royal guards allow you to get that close to the current king, then they obviously are willing to accept you as the next king And if the old king is dead and the king's personal army says that you're the new king, who is going to argue? (Other than the next guy with a bigger army, but you should have dealt with him before going on your regicide spree)

For better or worse, they won't shut up about it in a Language (Creole? Dialect? Accent? Patois?) that is not particularly well known outside Quebec In a way, this reminds me of a situation in Greece. When the Ottoman Empire finally died in the early twentieth century and left Greece to be fully controlled by Greeks for the first time in hundreds of years, there was a request from some Greek people directed towards the Greek Orthodox Church asking for The BIble to be translated into modern Greek. Apparently, multiple generations of foreign occupation caused the language to diverge from the Classical Greek of Antiquity In Quebec, after Britain took over Canada, the first reaction was to eliminate or suppress Francophone culture. Eventually, Anglophonic Canada decided it wasn't worth the effort and stopped actively persecuting the Québécois. But by this time, the French descended language used secretly in Canada was no longer identical to the language of Metropolitan France Oh well, as long as our Viking Overlords don't demand that we go back to drunk singing with potatoes in our mouths...

Ashley needs some illusions shattered, and quickly She will not settle down and learn what she can do with magic if she keeps indulging in fantasies of what she might do with magic, or what others might do to her

I told the Front Desk at Valley of the Kings Hotel that the "Do Not DIsturb" signs should be multilingual But would they listen?

That's because most memes are themselves errors that are incredibly resilient and are often only stopped by being displaced by a faster spreading meme

If you really want specifics about the various congregations that claim descent from the Abrahamic Covenant, (at least those with a significant presence in the United States) I would suggest The Handbook of Denominations from Abingdon Press https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handbook_of_Denominations The fourteenth edition is available from the publisher for about $30, but can be acquired at Amazon for under $20 As I said, it is currently in the 14th edition, but previous editions are still useful if you happen to find it in the library (I have the 12th at home) This can be found in both public libraries (although as a reference book, they might not allow it to be checked out) and in the libraries of many places of worship (membership in said congregation may be required even for in-library research) Tactful without sacrificing accuracy, much of the information is drawn from official sources of the various denominations It gives the historical background of the various broad stroke religious traditions and then goes into specifics about various denominations within those traditions https://www.amazon.com/Handbook-Denominations-United-States-14th/dp/1501822519 https://www.abingdonpress.com/product/9781501822513/ For example, I'm Methodist. When I was a child, church attendance dropped off sharply in the summer. Attendance also dropped for the Presbyterian Church across the street. So for several years our two congregations would share Sunday Services in July and August. The Hymnals were different, and you had to forgive Debts instead of Trespasses. But other than that, there wasn't much difference that the under-ten-year-old version of me could see. It wasn't until I was quite a bit older that I began to notice the differences between the Reform and Arminian movements. It wasn't until I was able to study The Handbook that I approached understanding.

One of these days, Sarah needs to canonically indulge in her evil side The non-canon/fantasy "Evil Sarah" appearances are just too interesting

If there is no memory, knowledge, or other advantage transferred from previous to current life, then reincarnation remains an abstract concept and not a useful ability
  22. NP Monday November 11, 2019

There is a reason why all the ruling males of the final dynasty shared the name Ptolemy and all the females used the name Cleopatra Why do you think a certain Scandinavian monarchy habitually alternates between just two King names? It isn't to make the "people" think the ruling house is somehow more stable than any other part of the Government If you need to manage a country over several lifetimes, forgetting details like the username and passwords you used two centuries ago can be quite inconvenient
  23. NP Monday November 11, 2019

This could lead to a disturbing "Ground Hog Day" type of existence where you keep living your life over and over again As children do not have much control over their own lives, your existence up to early adolescence would probably be pretty similar each time around Alternatively, a small child who started making wild claims about reincarnation or knowledge of the future would likely find their way into some sort of hospital Probably wouldn't want to spend too many childhood years like that... As you enter adulthood with some degree of knowledge from the previous laps of your own rat race, you could find ways to get ahead, or throw yourself into wilder chaos

What great act of penance will the game require of Susan to remove the outward signs of evil? Perhaps she will need to actually get on with the game...
