In Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide Trilogy, every sentient being at times of great stress gave a psychic signal that told anyone nearby exactly how far the stressed being was from his place of birth.  As humans stuck on Earth could never be more than eight thousand miles from the place of their birth, this sensation was usually not particularly strong.
