I have not been doing well of late and allowed myself a long leave of absence to recover. I have avoided most forums and all social media during the intervening time. I am now back, however, and intend to stay that way. I might not be very active but I will be here and available for forum needs as well as I am able.

It's not really looking good. Two days ago our PM Mette Frederiksen had a long phone call with Trump. She attempted to conciliate him with offers of new military bases and cooperation in getting at Greenland's natural resources, but he insisted that the US must have all of Greenland. She refused to budge on that, however, citing that it is very much against our Constitution to merely sell chunks of the Danish Commonwealth off. At this point Trump became threatening and abrasive, mentioning the possibility of trade tariffs and even military action aimed at seizing Greenland. Nonetheless, our PM stood firm.

I cannot express how much this saddens me. Denmark has considered herself a steadfast ally of the US ever since World War Two. We have supported the US politically and militarily during several international crises. We have stood by the US to a degree that other Europeans have actually referred to us as "the 51st State" or "Voice of America." (Being whom we are, we merely took that as compliments.) But I can't help but think that that might all be coming to an end now. Pro-US sentiment is rapidly cooling here and our leaders are calling for a united European front against further such demands.

I am deeply sorry.
