A SQL server being down for only minutes can be very costly if those minutes aren't inside an opportune maintenance window. In a lot of businesses, when the database is down, everything stops. Exactly. (In fact, I'm surprised at your implication that some businesses DON'T stop completely when their main database is down. Well, maybe with good replication, but I don't think MySQL supports any good.)

Actually, in Felix case it may be just changing default form. Wait. Just changing default form is bad idea. She use it once and never again. No way how to awaken that way. Also, Pandora DID say something about getting mad with power ... ... what about switching order of those comics in archive? But now everything is ok, as the impression is that Felix wants to do certain things with Kitty but not JUST that. ... if she doesn't want to do those things, she goes completely wrong with it. For start, the physical proximity is very clear signal. In fact it seems she already touches Kitty ...

Hyper awesomeness would be all three at the same time. I don't remember any dolphin trainer in that book. Dolphin astronauts, sure, but trainers? Personally, I find very unlikely we physically encounter intelligent/sapient alien life form before having radio or other long range contact with them. So, yes. Anything which didn't tried to communicate with technology - or, in worse case, try to shot us - before we got close enough to touch it will be assumed non-sapient until proved otherwise. Case in point, dolphins (and they tried to communicate with long-range ultrasound!).

How long do you think takes marking someone? But yes: I actually suspect that she marked Catalina, then left to mark others, then returned shortly before the point we saw her commenting nobody noticing. She OBVIOUSLY was already in character - she transformed. Or, he already found Nanase based on her meeting Susan sometime before, and was stalking her. I actually do think Immortals can find people they know quite fast based on their aura or something, but I agree that we don't have that confirmed in comics yet. Considering the fact that she felt that pretty much all of those that she interviewed wouldn't get spells that fit her plans, it's possible that with Rhoda and Catalina hijinks and finding Kitty and Felix, Pandora might just be satisfied with having marked 4 people during this outing, the 4th mark being Good Tom because, again, saving puppies ;). Liz. She did find whatever she could marked Liz with useful.

NOW I disagree. While it doesn't seem like too much time passed between seeing Catalina and marking her, there wasn't reason to hurry in case of Catalina, while there MIGHT be reason to hurry with others, at least because they might leave the mall, and Pandora was not distracted yet, so no reason to mark others before Catalina or after (and returning back to Catalina little later). Also, I think she WAS in interview mode when noticing Good Tom already and consider fact that he is marked proof that she did marked others as well. (Of course, it's just what I think ; no way to prove that, unless someone else from those interviewed appears with mark. Like Liz.)

Oh, I meant being an actual astronaut, on the space shuttle or space station, not in a fictional reality. (Not that I'd have said no to being Medical Officer on a starship, it just wasn't an actual career aspiration.) Oh, I wanted to be starship astronaut (or starship pilot) in our reality. Sadly, such career was not available, due to mentioned unsatisfactory state of starship development. Too big dream, I guess. Of course, I was an astronaut in several fictional realities as well, but it's not the same ... also, it's not considered career. Or at least it wasn't considered career back then - nowadays, there are several computer games with professional players, although closest to being astronaut is probably StarCraft and that's still pretty far. (Unless there are professional players in Eve Online. Never played it, it appeared too late for me.) Or possibly that they confuse "success" with "fame", believing that being successful means having the general public be aware of your accomplishments. Publishing research papers that only get read by people within your specialty, or contributing to any project that doesn't gain you name recognition, apparently doesn't count as "success" under such a mindset. You could discover a vaccine that saves thousands of lives every year, and still not be "successful" if everybody outside of MegaPharmaCorp only knows that it's a MegaPharmaCorp product and don't know that it was you who discovered it. Exactly what I meant. It's even worse considering most of those "successes" - like those vaccines - are team work and you can't really say single person did it. Note that while it work very similar in team sports, commentators pretend it doesn't and are talking about how many goals (or baskets or whatever) that single person gave although even person who never gave single goal can be very useful for team.

This would require Pandora ducking out of sight before jumping to the spirit realm to be able to mark people, it would seem pretty suspicious if someone came up to me, asked about what I'd like to be able to transform into, then vanish and few moments later I'm suddenly able to transform myself or someone else. It'd be much better for her to survey a bunch of people and then duck into the spirit realm to do the marking. Uh ... that's how I meant it. Interview everyone (including Catalina), go away, "vanish" to spirit realm, mark everyone. Although ... regarding the "suddenly" ... Catalina transformed quite quickly but still didn't noticed for some time Yes. Apparently, she didn't believed others will use the spell so quickly OR that if they do it wouldn't cause any hijinks. Interesting question: was she planing to try another mall? It was definitely good idea to stay here, else she would miss Kitty ...

In terms of some software fields, like music, Win10 could be considered a valid upgrade. I run Cakewalk SONAR Platinum, and it likes Windows 10 very much. So do the plug-ins that I use with it. Well ... there is also DirectX 12, which is upgrade compared to DirectX 11 (although not compared to Vulcan). Except only reason to not put it into Windows 7 was that they wanted some reason for people to downgrade to Windows 10. (Case in point, Vulcan works in Windows 7.) Of course it can, but note that it's not "even" ... there are applications which reacts to being upgraded worse than kernel. Kernel has the advantage of being whole in memory, so it can be safely deferred. Daemons are usually stopped, upgraded and started again, which can be inconvenient on servers ... upgrading MySQL can mean several whole minutes of it not running!

Is it possible that Edward Verres was using the mind control spores on her? Not unless it was accident and he didn't realized how they work. Based, again, on his behaviour.

There is a possibility that she marked Liz as well, the fact that Pandora didn't elaborate on why kind of spell she could give Liz is pretty ominous. Also, she marked Good Tom this day, probably. I think Pandora was talking about Felix becoming mad with power, I don't think Pandora believes that Tedd being mad with power would be a good thing. Hmmm ... does she KNOW about lord Tedd? I have been hoping this arc would introduce some of Luke's group for a while. And they do not have to know each other when one of the people can see who has magic and might be scanning crowds (at a LGBTQ event/club/clothing store/etc) at random the odds of a change meeting increase. While true, there is probably at least one magic user Luke has been friend BEFORE he realized what his spell does ... otherwise, how would he realize? But we don't know how big Luke's group is, so ... It's probably not THAT much specific. I mean, I would assume she could STILL mark Rich with the deduction spell even later in the conversation, and her note about "keeping as last resort" suggests she would be able to mark them later (they MIGHT be thinking about that for while), and Liz might remain markable for some time afterwards as well ... but she would RISK that she will miss the opportunity, and I don't think it's risk she would take. Yes ... ... on the other hand she didn't waited too long with Catalina, and there was ZERO risk of Catalina stopping being markable. I think she was doing the interviews being visible, then turned invisible and marked all people she decided to mark. Also, it IS possible those included more than who we know about, possibly even some who we didn't saw to be interviewed. I sort of think that we shouldn't assume every magic user in Moperville will become named character.

Well, I figure some workplaces might object when said athletics are done upon a pole when one is nearly naked and are associated with "gentlemen's clubs." But it's almost olympic discipline! (note: illustration images of that article might be NSFW) Following beach volleyball (hmm ... also one image ...). And frankly, there are other disciplines where the athletes aren't wearing so much more either. ... true. It doesn't matter how illogical it is, if it would get someone into problems.

I agree that compared to cardiologists, management is overpaid. Those famous people ... well, you need to be really good AND have lot of luck to actually get famous enough to be paid well for it. There is only so much positions available. Case in point, Dan definitely doesn't seem to get rich on EGS, and look how good it is.
  13. Story Friday March 3, 2017

Susan knew some French two years back. Almost three now. If she stayed in that French class - which she probably did - she would likely be able to converse in it now. Also, this scene. That was two years prior to the beginning of the comic, it's possible Wolf has been given the scoop on Uryuoms by now. I was also thinking this. Just because he didn't know about aliens two years before comics doesn't mean he doesn't know now. She probably isn't alien, yes. I don't think she would directly lie to William. Also ... Wolf not knowing about aliens and still being allowed to see Lavender? I think someone was making fun of him just before explaining it. (Third: those alien mind control spores were not actually disproved. Her behaviour in Zoombies storyline is suspicious. Maybe she decided she waited for Verres to notice enough.)

But remember, if they didn't do it that way, users might - gasp - refuse to install the updates! Especially if they know what's inside. Or upgrade to linux. That 'free upgrade' was neither free nor upgrade. Only way the upgrade will not be inconvenient would be if they let user choose when it happens. Person who actually USE the computer will object both if it won't allow to be used when he starts it in morning to start working AND if it won't turn off in night when he really want the computer to be quiet so he can sleep. Note that it IS possible to do most of upgrade on running system. If the system is designed by someone with actual brain. Case in point, almost any distribution of linux. It would still be inconvenient if you can't choose time to upgrade.

Also, it makes Pandora one of those "everyone knew" ... Well ... it would be closer to what Tedd actually wants than her giving Raven chance to fight. (Although ... I think Raven enjoyed the fight, he just didn't liked that students were in risk.) Why wouldn't she? She's shapeshifter and have hundreds of years of experience in looking good. (Also, she already proved she care about looking good, and not caring is one of few logical reasons why shapeshifter might not look good).
  16. NP: Wednesday March 1, 2017

    Is athletics really considered NSFW?
  17. NP: Friday, March 3rd, 2017

Ok, so it's not just not believing to have chance as catboy, felix is really trans. BTW, is Pandora considering marking FELIX as well? For case Kitty won't stay around? Tohru Honda or Tohru the dragon? I think the dragon's maid dress is too long, but she needs it to hide the tail. Pandora doesn't. Not because she doesn't have one (yup, she has tail in this comics, and doesn't look like cat's), but because she's invisible anyway.

And getting to college is also a goal which would lead to the same sorts of decisions. And I think it's more that too many kide don't believe in their own futures enough to dream big. I had other things I wanted to be, like an astronaut or a dolphin trainer, both of which require college, or a professional writer, which requires a good command of the English language and familiarity with your chosen genre(s). Oh, yes, I also wanted to be astronaut. But even as an child I wasn't naive enough to believe we reach starship level technology soon enough for me to actually get to one. I also wanted to be secret agent. I can neither confirm nor deny how well it went with that one dream (Note: It wasn't one or other. I wanted to be secret agent infiltrating orbital facilities in other star systems. Although, "secret" ... James Bond kind of secret, if I remember correctly. Which brings me to the topic of never believing to have the necessary physical abilities without cyberware ... not that there was that much books about cyberware when I was young. The term cyberware is probably younger, at least.) I find likely that lot of kids, no matter their color, simply don't see being Cardiologist as success, reachable or not. At least not compared to professional athletes. Which is sad. Working in entertainment (and close fields like athletics and politics) is overrated.

A frightening thought: If Time Travel literally is the only thing believed to be impossible with Magic, then it might be that bringing the dead back to life IS possible. Edward did say that classical Zombie-type undead can't happen, but that may be more about the "spreads like an infection" part than about the "undead minions of a Necromancer" part--although from what we know about EGS-world magic, it's probably simpler to use summoned golems than to raise corpses if you need an army, so raising a dead person would only be worthwhile if you have need of that particular individual. Hmmmm ... re-reading what he actually said, it was basically that you can't expect reliability from dead and animated tissue. Meaning, it may actually be worth it to "raise dead" by putting "dead person" (soul, mind, whatever) into golem or somehow preserved body (mummy). Mr. Kitsune don't look as mummy, however ... Meanwhile, the aberrations/vampires are not actually dead.

  21. Or replied to the question "Are you a boy or a girl?" with "Which one would you like me to transform into?" Unlikely, Ashley would remember that. Also, it was over internet: offer to change sex would be assumed to refer to pretending other sex.
  22. Story Friday March 3, 2017

Hmm, true, although she got the singing ability through lessons and practice, not through an Uryuom touching antennae to her head, which is the sort of language-learning we were talking about. It's possible that sort of lesson wouldn't stick the way actual experience does. It's also possible abilities obtained this way sticks MORE. Interestingly, I carried the one-shoulder-strap bag with the strap over my head and I'm having problems with back anyway. I wonder how much worse it would be if I didn't ... We can be reasonably certain Diane is not genderswapped I think Diane the detective already realized Ellen is speaking from personal experience. Or will the moment she stops to think about it.

Is that really "other" possibility? I mean, it's possible, but it won't really answer the question of how it reaches decision. It will still leave all the options: "magic reset is outside it's scope", "magic reset is decided deterministically" and "magic reset is decided by consensus". Which was fitting as 8 was 8 because it was after 7, 7 was 7 as it was after Vista (6), and Longhorn/Vista was 6 because XP was NT5.1, NT5 being 2000. Now, I'm pretty sure XP logically deserved its own version number externally if not internally (7 and 8 were internally 6.1 and 6.2), so 10 (internally also 10) could be considered to have brought the version numbers to where they logically should have been. Considering the internal number will continue to grow but the external is supposed to stay 10, wouldn't that be pointless?
  24. Story Wednesday March 1, 2017

About Tedd, about herself or about the person who designed the magic analyzer wand? I don't think Tedd would be doing direct spell book updates. Although ... it's not completely impossible ... But note: considering she has hereditary magic talent, she may not completely lose access to magic. It's possible she will "only" lose her current spells. I don't think Tedd is completely unique. Someone like him could be 1 in 500 million or so which would mean he'd likely be the only one in North America. But there's also the possibility that there's is always someone like him, when one dies, another is born to take their place. If someone like Tedd is meant to insure that Magic doesn't completely become forgotten, then it would make sense that such a failsafe is continuous, rather than it come to a point where its like "you know, I think in 18 years I might have to reset magic, better crank out a couple seers" Considering seers can die unexpectedly and they are useless until at least age 10, I don't think having just one would be safe. Also, if seers can only be born in magic families, then it can require some wait before one of magic families will have child ... no, I think there are multiple seers ready at any time and few already growing. On the other hand, 1 in 500 million would mean 15 on whole Earth, that might be enough. Note that it's possible that seer needs to be born in family with magic talent. Although there may be families with magic talent not aware of it - case in point, Susan's father may not be aware of his talent ... so, even if the "Muggles" is wrong word, seer might live his entire live completely unaware.
  25. NP: Wednesday March 1, 2017

In the case of Tedd, it might work differently, like those flashes of light and the hyperness. But as Dan said if it feels like a slight chill, it might go unnoticed under many circumstances. Kitty was in one of those circumstances where she was seeing the enchantment take place the moment she said "POOF" and felt the chill so she could quickly put two and two together. When Catalina changed the first time, it does look like she felt something, but likely attributed it to Rhoda cuddles. Hmmm ... yes. Tedd being exception might also work, it's true Catalina might miss-attributed it ...
