  1. Story Wednesday October 4, 2017

Diane's head could be thrust forward a little, so, yes, maybe. But shoulders hitting a wall don't make a THUMP like a head. So is Diane mad at Susan now, mad at magic, or both?
  2. Story Wednesday October 4, 2017

What's that THUMP about? Did Diane just hit her head on the wall behind her? My title for this one is Drama Lesson. And now I can finally go to bed.
  3. I can write basic HTML with just a text editor like Notepad++. Not sure I can master creating those "header files." But thanks for the heads up. Here's the HTML I use to save each new page from EGS: <dt id=""><div class="pagetitle">() ()&nbsp;</div><img id="" target="egs" width="100%" src=".png"></dt><dd></dd>
  4. Story, Monday October 2, 2017

A friend of mine visited St. Petersburg when it was still Leningrad and said a lot of the buildings still had damage from World War II. There's small section of wall on the Truman Balcony at the White House which is left unpainted to show the scorch marks from when the British burned it in 1814. All that was left was the stone shell. And that's why it's the White House. They painted it to cover up the scorch marks while they were rebuilding the rest of it. The White House has been gutted and rebuilt twice. During the Truman administration, a piano fell through the floor it was on. No word on whether Harry was playing it. Anyway, it was obvious it was unsafe, so Truman had it rebuilt and lived across the street in Blair House while the work was done. And that's when he added that balcony opening from the Oval Room. (The Oval Office is in the West Wing.)
  5. Story, Monday October 2, 2017

I'd like someone to say "But we just fixed that!" If this was animated or live action, it would deserve a sequence with a worker just finishing repairs on the pillar, and, as he walks away, it gets zapped in exactly the same spot.
  6. Story, Monday October 2, 2017

    Worked for Mr. Incredible.
  7. Story, Monday October 2, 2017

How about something like all the Batmobiles? Some kind of promotion that Carol Brown would be there to cover? Besides, the mall is going to be were at least some of the action will be.
  8. Story, Monday October 2, 2017

I was thinking inside the mall, maybe some actual museum pieces, or high-end cars from luxury dealers, on the main floor. This is one of those atrium-style malls with walkways to access shops above the main floor. Actually, I live right across the street from such a mall, and I've seen cars on display on main floors in other atrium malls.

I wonder if Ellen will ever be able to turn a woman into a man? Relevant because that's what Sam wants, or things they want. BTW, what's a better pronoun for a transexual or gender-fluid character here? He/she? They? I don't like "it", though I guess I do use it for babies sometimes. Let's face it, you usually don't know until you have to change its diaper. Which I've done more than a few times.
  10. Story, Monday October 2, 2017

Gee, this Friday Night at the Moperville Mall would be the perfect place to hold a classic car event, wouldn't it? Look up how much a gull-wing Mercedes is worth now. Thirty-odd years ago I saw one here going for $300,000.
  11. If I really like a book and especially if I'm going to do a fanfic on it, I like to convert it to HTML. When I had a scanner and good OCR software, I converted lots of dead-tree books to HTML. Unfortunately I've lost all that work, but it would be worth doing again. PDF is usally right if it's true PDF and it's single-column, but a lot of the stuff you'll find on the web are just image scans of pages bundled into a PDF file. With HTML and any browser, you can change the text size and column width however you want. I usually go for about half-width on my laptop, and text large enough to read without glasses. Plus, you can add links to anything image or html file on your computer, and any website.
  12. Political Discussion Thread (READ FIRST POST)

Once the icecaps melt, that problem will go away.
  13. Star Trek DS9 versus B5

Well, this thread really drifted off-topic, didn't it? I have will add some stuff that's relevant to DS9 and/or B5. None of it will have no relevance to DS9 or B5. I would say "honest Injun" but I'll just leave it at "honest". Both B5 and DS9 had actors playing important continuing roles leave before their series ended, following the same path to greater things as Rob Morrow did after leaving Northern Exposure, Wayne Rogers and McLean Stevenson after leaving Northern Exposure, and What's Her Name from Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed. Walter Koenig was a lot better in B5. Anyone remember that Bill Mumy was the original Will Robinson? Both B5 and DS9 had commanders who became religious figures to alien races. IMHO that's the clincher that proves Paramount stole the series concept. Without it, DS9 would be just Gunsmoke in space like Star Trek was Wagon Train in space.
  14. What Are You Watching?

The Hallelujah Trail for the umpteenth time. It was based on a pretty good novel I read before a lot of you were born.

Yeah, but George has insurance for that.

Well, if Pandora happens to be available. Problem 1, Sam has to admit he's a a she. Problem 2, Pandora is kind of preoccupied right now. Problem 3, Pandora might not be able to do it if she resets. There's also the Tedd path now--it's canon that his spell can permanently change someone else's gender, and that would likely stay changed even after magic changed. With Sarah and Elliot both pleading for Sam, Tedd would probably at least consider it. That also makes me wonder if Ellen can also permanently change someone's gender now. Seems like it would fit the pattern of enhancements to her basic spell.

The one that's actually between "birth..." and "control...?" It was "reproductive health rights" that hijacked my memory as I wrote that misquote. For a long time I've been saying that Republicans are committing political suicide by trying to ban abortion because, as we all know, bastards grow up to be Democrats. But I've realized that the base is taking care of that problem by putting more restrictions on voting and immigration, and even trying to stop automatically granting citizenship to people born in the United States even if their parents aren't citizens. Who do you think coined "anchor babies?"
  18. Story, Monday October 2, 2017

Adrian agrees, except when Grace is startled. So, yeah, I think its pretty much a given Grace would be a threat to vampires right out of her egg.
  19. Np, Monday October 2, 2017

As far as we know, there was only one "undying" wolf, the one that Abraham's enchanted diamond created. And "undying" doesn't necessarily mean "unaging." It could be taken as "humongously difficult to kill." And the living-for-centuries thing just isn't part of the werewolf meme. There's a really touching short story about an old Superman who retains his superpowers but has become senile. He visits a very old Lois Lane in some kind of nursing home and thinks she must be Martha Kent. Anyway, what I'm thinking of as a "cure" is restoring the empathy of a vampire and removing their vampiric powers without killing them. This is not to say turning them into saints, but giving them an opportunity to redeem themselves without compelling them to.

To fit with the rule Pandora believes is true, yes.
  21. Story Wednesday September 27, 2017

I think he shares that trait with Bad Tom, though BT's a sand-lot bad guy compared with a big-league villain like Sirleck. I'm thinking of Negi's chain-smoking, underwear-stealing ermine.

Maybe combined with Ashley's unbearable niceness--too nice for Nanase--Ashley could actually be able to cure vampires. That would be a real game-changer; it's something that wasn't in Edward's Endless Barrel of Exposition. It would also make Pandora wonder why she hadn't tried to find a cure for werewolves instead of killing them all. After all, that's what Abraham at least tried to do.

So Pandora risked her son's life for fun? Pandora's explanation of why she couldn't give Ashley transformation spells began with a statement that Ashley's essential goodness conflicted with those spells. In the next comic, explains that because Ashley's desire for transformation magic isn't a natural affinity while her goodness is. But Pandora isn't finished. She says that she could give Ashley spells for sharing feelings. It occurs to me that sharing feelings with a vampire that has no empathy could cause said vampire pain, something like holy water burning a demon. Also, Pandora begins her thoughtbox in the second panel about spells she actually could give Ashley with "meanwhile." Dan may have put this qualifier in to say that while Ashley couldn't get transformation spells at the time, she might later. And, of course, the main story has progressed more than two Moperverse months into later. And two more strips later, Pandora says to herself that she could give Liz a spell that wasn't what Pandora had in mind, but had many ways that spell could wind up helping. However, Dan didn't let Pandora tell us what that spell was. And that's the last of Liz we see in Marker.

Well, giving Ashley a generic Asian background might be just what Dan said it was: A way to avoid panels upon panels upon panels of explanation of something that he didn't see as that important to the story. But it's been a long time in our world since he made those comments and Dan could have either changed his mind about Ashley's heritage, or have played us back then to set up a big reveal later on. Nah, Dan would never do things like that, would he?
