And that's just the DMCA. Nobody is even paying attention to the YMCA.

To be fair, Pharaoh, I feel that Hatshepsut's bad reputation was at the very least somewhat undeserved.
  3. Trail Camera and Other Nature Images

Given how rebellious it already was, I shudder to think how it would act afterwards. It is probably planning to march on city hall even now.
  4. Things You Only Noticed On Reread

I did mention the soldiers, I thought? *scratches head* Mind you, it is worth mentioning that if you fail to carry your weight in this kind of situation, your name will be mud or worse. Importantly, this doesn't mean falling a bit short; someone who does their best but can't always quite keep up may still be part of this, especially if they still have some areas they excel in. It is committing the mortal sin of persistently dawdling or shoving your own duties off on others whenever you are able to that can and will make you a pariah.
  5. Things That Are Just Annoying

In Denmark we used to have a pair of sports announcers who knew about as much about sports as they knew about weather. And their weather expertise was limited to deciding that if they got wet when they went outside, it was probably raining. They had an amazing talent for ruining any event they commented on with inane babble and gossip about the involved athletes that had nothing to do with what they were actually engaged in on screen. Their most memorable moment was without question during a Tour de France while it was going through a mountainous region. One poor bicyclist slid off the path and fell into a chasm and they didn't notice. When the cameras then panned to follow the fallen contestant, the two idiots complained about not wanting to look at stupid mountain views but at the race. I think they were still complaining when we learned that the poor man had died from his injuries.

Not an uncommon situation in, for example, a military training context. An officer or noncom who is deeply loathed for putting you through hell can nonetheless also be respected for all the effort they put into building the team and keeping it together. Often expressed in some form of "He is a bastard, but he is our bastard." This doesn't happen always, of course, but in general soldiers aren't stupid and they can tell when the officer in charge actually cares about what they are doing as opposed to being a mere sadist glorying in power. It sometimes comes as a bit of a surprise for the people involved when they realise it. But it has a strange sort of logic to it. The officer put them through hell, so now they will follow that same officer into Hell. It goes without saying that the soldiers are also highly likely to feel the same way towards each other.

It is a surprisingly persistent tale. Apparently it has been extended to polar bears on occasion, too.

Unquestionably. I was simply pointing out that a muffler may be used to generate mystery and/or horror as well as to conceal them.

In the webcomic Girl Genius there may be found some rather easygoing and good-natured horrors known as the Jägermonsters. All of them have huge mouths with rows of shark teeth. One of their officers is named Jenka and she is so scary that the other Jägers are afraid of her. The first few times we saw her, she constantly wore a muffler that hid her mouth and teeth. Oddly enough, that made her seem more intimidating than her fellow Jägers even though they were the ones flaunting their big scary teeth. The last time she reappeared we finally got to see her without her muffler. As it turns out, she has a perfectly normal mouth and teeth that look just like those of an ordinary human. The reason she wears the muffler while together with the rest of the Jägers is that she is kind of embarrassed by this.

It's just not a real family reunion without some stake and garlic action. Just ask my uncle Belmont and old grandpa van Helsing.

The man was a key part of creating HTCPCP. Cut him some slack.

Never heard of them. Clearly they were kept secret from me.

I personally feel this strip is completely out of character for Ashley. She is far too forthright and strong-willed to be so easily cowed.

As is your right, of course. But to me Picard sounded genuinely uncertain. Also, if he wanted to lie, why not tell the poor hologram a reassuring lie? "Yes, they will be there." I don't know. It was just the impression I got from the acting. Patrick Stewart is a really good actor and I believe he purposefully went for seeming uncertain.

Clearly they were secret wars. If comics are to be believed, these happen all the time.

The Moderator: I've seen quite a bit of double posts recently. While I know that I am ordinarily relaxed about these, it is getting to be a bit much. I request of posters that if they wish to add a sentence or two to a recent post and nothing new has been posted in the meantime, please use the Edit function to add to your most recent post rather than posting a new one. ~tOH.

I have seen it and I highly recommend it. It only scratches the surface of the huge lurking iceberg that is AI ethics but it makes a good start.

Knowing Susan, I suspect that is not going to happen. She might suggest to Diane that she run, mind you, but whether Diane will run if Susan stays I really don't know. I don't think so, but I am not sure. Temporarily retreat maybe, but leave?
  20. Story, Friday November 24, 2017

This is an issue that has been discussed in Star Trek: TNG, DS9 and Voyager specifically in connection with holograms. The Doctor would be a good example; so is Moriarty from TNG and Vic Fontaine from DS9. These are holograms so sophisticated that they have actual sentience and the ability to make decisions not merely prompted by scenario programming. The thing is, the issue of artificial sentience is so complex that I do not think that there can be any simple answer. In the above cases, the decision usually made was the stopgap measure of leaving their simulations running and thus allowing the sentient holograms to continue their existences. I use the word 'stopgap' deliberately as it does not actually answer any of the involved questions to leave the simulations running, it merely postpones having to make that answer. There was a small but heartbreaking moment in one of the first hologram episodes of TNG where Picard is about to leave a detective-noir scenario where one of the characters has become aware it exists in a simulation. This character asks Picard, "What happens when you leave? Will I go home and find my wife and children waiting for me? Or will I just cease?" And Picard answers, "I don't know." This is not quite the moral conundrum of above as the character was not advanced enough to truly be sentient but still merely simulating it within its parameters. But it holds echoes of the problem and is worth considering.

Yes, but unlike me, you are made up for real.

I feel tempted to quote the initiative rules from AD&D just to hear the howls and groans from the people who advocate clear and legible rulebooks. But I can't bring myself to do it.

Nonsense. Everything is real except me. I am just made up.

    Or possibly decomposing software.
