Meh. In Denmark we just pass whoever it is a Segway and tell them to step on it.

They might still need to be on the lookout for hostile pigeons. Just because the US is no longer using a technology does not mean it can't be dangerous. You can still be shot dead by a M-1 Garand, for example. Therefore, DHS could very well be scanning pigeons for hammer and sickle decals, or possibly swastikas. Do not underestimate Nazi and Commie pigeons. They invariably have fowl intentions.

Comic for Wednesday January 12, 2022
The Old Hack replied to Darth Fluffy's topic in Comic Discussion
I explained myself poorly and posted without thinking about the topic, and I apologize for that. I was speaking of bullies in general, not of Tony specifically; it is indeed valid to speculate how his bullying actions might have been born. As to what may be done about the bully, which action may be taken is uncertain to me; as I stated earlier it is a very complex matter far beyond my field of expertise. All I know is that the current general practice of simply ignoring the matter and allowing the children themselves to sort things out (or more likely, not) is suboptimal. -
Comic for Wednesday January 12, 2022
The Old Hack replied to Darth Fluffy's topic in Comic Discussion
The cycle of abuse. *sigh* It is an extremely complex issue. Unfortunately, discussing whether a bully's backstory is tragic or not does not really deal with the main issue, which is that the bully is presently a bully. -
Which is the same as excluding us. You have clearly not looked very hard. I found this article after ten seconds of google searching.

You are entitled to think so. I am entitled to safeguard my mental health by refusing to let a creature who considers me a dangerous predator and mentally ill based on prejudice alone have any sort of foothold in my everyday life. Again, you are free to think so. Each person should deal with this individually and I am certainly not saying that it is now wrong to enjoy either the books or the movies. I am merely saying that that woman is repellent to me and I would rather keep my everyday life free of reminders of her. That was not her point. Her point was that if you do not have a functioning uterus, you are not a woman. I shall refrain from commenting on how much wrong there is with that save that I find it fascinating that trans exclusive radical 'feminists' hold such an essentially patriarchal attitude.

I don't believe in book burning. Fortunately I do believe in wastebaskets, which is where I consigned my own JKR books.

I would much rather that you were right than me, to be honest.

On a related note, YouTube just offered a friend of mine a conspiracy theory video that explained why the Internet is actually a hoax. I am morally certain that the irony utterly escaped whatever imbecile posted that video.

Ahhhh. I now fondly remember gamesmastering Rolemaster a quarter century ago. I let a player find a +20 sword (the equivalent of +4 in D&D) which unfortunately also had triple fumble chance. The player could have stopped using it at any point but he stuck grimly to it in spite of the constant fumbles BECAUSE IT WAS +20. It provided me with a great deal of entertainment because he kept stunning, injuring and near maiming himself with it. No, the sword didn't break, though it did eventually break the player. Killed the character he played, too.

When I was a kid, I actually believed that this meant a lot of boxing matches. I was later on informed that I was not alone in holding this fond and rather awesome belief.

If they had been International Consumer Business Machines, they would have crossed continents at rocket speed. Of course, my old friend Flemming insisted the IBM stood for Incomprehensible Business Methods.

The Old Hack replied to The Old Hack's topic in Off Topic Discussion
I admit I rather like the idea of separation of Church and State. We don't have it in Denmark, but many believe we ought to have it. We do have freedom of belief protected by our Constitution, mind you -- expressed in the form 'freedom of thought, freedom of belief and freedom of speech.' Yes, our notions of democracy grabbed everything we could from the American Constitution. We didn't get separation of Church and State, but in fairness the Church has had very little influence for several decades and it is possible for individual citizens to declare themselves emancipated from the Church. ('Emancipated' sounds a little drastic and has unfortunate implications, but I honestly think it is the best translation of the term.) -

Why did the plucked chicken cross the road? Because it was inside the crocodile that wanted to go to the other side. -
The same could be said for IBM and Commodore. In particular I remember a Commodore employee who said that a big reason the Amiga eventually fizzled out was a man he referred to as Commodore's 'sales prevention manager.'

Mine too. It certainly beats the attitude of "Anything that is not strictly within the norms I am used to should be not only forbidden but harshly punishable and socially ostracized." Still, some people seem to think that is America so what can you do.

The Old Hack replied to Pharaoh RutinTutin's topic in EGS: NP Discussion
Cultists are generally not affected by seals, sigils or summon spells. They are just regular humans with a weird pointy hood or possibly a red baseball cap. They are mostly only dangerous in large numbers but tend to be for all intents and purposes mindlessly loyal to the cult leader. They certainly can't be reasoned with. -

I suppose that is a fairly harmless way of keeping busy, as opposed to actually acting on it. -
