http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Woo-hoo! The comic is finally up! If you visited my website this morning and noticed it didn't update, that's because of some technical difficulties I've (mostly) got under control for the time being. Remember; if I'm unable to update, or if there are any other issues, I'll let you know on social media. Sometimes, I'll even show you my comic on social media when I'm not able to access my site, like I did today. In any event, if you're reading this, today's strip is up and running! Thank you for your patience! Not much to say about this strip, except that I love Sugar Rush's mock salute in panel 2. And that it's hard to draw a comic on a computer that intermittently freezes!

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com The Necrobots corner their prey, and quickly discover they fell for the ol' switcheroo. After a few weeks of fillers around my birthday, the canonical comics have returned! Many thanks to Ken Bailey and YouWillNeverKnow for their submissions, and to all of you for being patient! This comic took me a while to figure out. Oddly enough, the first panel was the last one I sketched out; I had a clear vision for what I wanted to do in all the other panels, but I wasn't sure how I wanted to show the Necrobots giving chase. I was initially going to view them from a straight-on angle, but with their unusual curved necks and hunched-over posture, they look a lot better from a side or three-quarters view. I think the lead Necrobot's posture and legs show off how much of their design was inspired by velociraptors. This strip took quite a few layers to get the right look, especially for the last panel. That "ZOOM" streak is actually broken up into two layers; one that passes in front of the Necrobots and one behind them, so as to create the illusion of Sugar Rush zipping right through them. While working on this strip, I realized that the last time I drew Sugar Rush, she was off-model. A few strips ago, she was shown wearing no belt, red briefs, and white leggings. She's supposed to have a red belt, a white leotard, and red leggings. Whoops... Methinks that I forgot to draw one line, and it threw off all her colors from the waist down! I may go back and fix it... If I don't, I'll just say it's an homage to the many animation errors from the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon series.

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Villains have a way of making the most harmless-sounding words seem menacing. What on earth could "The Playground" be? And why is Necros so sure that Belt Boy's friends won't be able to follow him? Stay tuned, everyone! I don't want to spoil too much, so don't expect a huge explanation on this week's strip. But I will tell you this; "The Playground" is a fairly recent name I came up with for something I had a vague idea of for a long while. I think that this new name will solidify some of my ideas, and I look forward to implementing them. Also, "teeter-totter" is a funny word. Tee-hee! We're in the home stretch of my annual contest! You have until May 19th to send me either fan art or a video game avatar based on my characters! If you were waiting until the last minute, this is it! Remember that EVERY properly submitted entry will earn you a prize of some sort in the form of art from yours truly, so everyone wins something!

Comic 4/21/18 - Infiltration Lubrication Investigation
heroesofcrash posted a topic in Heroes Of Crash
http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Necros tries to deduce how Belt Boy slipped away. Perhaps if Necros took Belt Boy's friends the least bit seriously, he'd have gathered intel on 'em and know who was responsible for his foe's escape. Sharp-eyed readers may notice a subtle shadow in the first and third panels, but it's probably nothing... Quick reminder: there's LESS THAN A MONTH LEFT to enter my art trade/contest! I'd like fan art for my birthday next month, and if you submit it according to the rules on my website, you're GUARANTEED some art in return! If I like your submission enough, you may win one of my two grand prizes! Check out the full rules by clicking the big button on my main page, beneath the latest comic! -
TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Break out the syrup; Dino-Mo is about to make some robot pancakes. I'm quite proud of that last panel. Drawing an ankylosaurus doing a cannonball dive is pretty daunting, but finding visual references helped a lot. I drew her like a rather bulky person, then added the shell, horns, and tail afterward. But as daunting as that was, I was not looking forward to drawing the Necrobots. I'm simultaneously proud of and annoyed at my past self for coming up with such a weird, detailed design for these bots. Contrary to popular belief (or at least the TV Tropes page for my comic), Necrobots don't have actual emotions, or at least Necros didn't program them that way. I might be willing to consider that they have developed one emotion: annoyance. Somewhere in the back of my head, I wonder if my GPS gets annoyed when I choose not to to go with the route it's planned and don't ask it for an alternate route. Dino-Mo's a bit of a hypocrite for calling Dodge a nerd, then giving her attack an alliterative name that sounds like something straight out of Pokemon or Digimon. At least, that's my take on it. Just a reminder; my birthday is next month, and like always, what I want most is fan art! My annual contest has evolved into a bit of an art trade, so that anyone who submits me fan art or a video game avatar based on my characters will get some free art from me! But there's still two big prizes that only two people will win...! Check out the full rules on my site at TheHeroesOfCRASH.com today!

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Necros isn't the only one with surprises...! Like I said, if Necros does have a stereotypical villain weakness, it's that he enjoys monologuing, but he's able to keep himself from going too far. Necros has no intention of revealing his entire plan to our hero. He gives Belt Boy just enough information to play off his fears. I asked some people on Twitter who were discussing onomatopoeia what the proper sound effect for a dodgeball would be. I got "Poonk" and "Bont", but I don't think that the sound would end in a letter as hard as K or T. In the end, I went with my original idea: "Poomp". What do you think? Is there a better sound effect for a dodgeball hitting something? Leave me a comment and let me know! Just a quick reminder; there's less than two months to enter my contest! The full directions and rules are on my site, but essentially, if you make a video game avatar or some fan art based on my characters, you get some free art by me! And the best avatar and the best art will each get a special grand prize! I haven't received any entries yet, so now's a great time to enter, yourself!

Comic 3/17/18 - "Good Evil Monologue" is Technically an Oxymoron
heroesofcrash posted a topic in Heroes Of Crash
TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Necros isn't doing Belt Boy any favors, even if it is a villian tradition to offer some courtesies for the hero. While I don't mind the occasional cliche, gimmick, or typical plot device in media, I find it's a lot more fun to subvert expectations and turn cliches on their ear. Take Titanium Maiden, for example. It's a common cliche for the main heroine in a group to be a love interest who's feminine and wears pink, and Titanium Maiden is no exception there. But she doesn't look like a typical heroine; she looks more like a bodybuilder than a supermodel or the girl-next-door. Furthermore, muscular characters are often stereotyped as being brutish, dumb, or savage, and usually male... and TM is none of these. By combining two popular tropes that don't go together, I created a character that's more interesting than either one by itself. She's not the typical heroine, nor is she the typical strong character, and that makes her fun to work with. Necros, however, doesn't twist cliches around or enjoy playing with them; he outright rejects them. Necros is no-nonsense; he prefers to be effective and to the point, which is why he finds the "honorable villain" tradition of granting a hero a last request to be ridiculous. He cares more about winning than being honorable or dramatic. He sees no reason to do anything nice for his enemy - heck, as a bad guy, he sees no reason to do anything nice at all. If he has one cliche weakness, it's his tendency to monologue (partly because of his own ego, and partly because he enjoys taunting Belt Boy), but he'd never own up to it. And to be fair, Necros does dial back his monologues compared to other villains. He hasn't even revealed his entire plan or his "endgame" to Belt Boy just yet, whereas most other baddies might go full-"Bond villain" and explain the entirety of their plan and goals, and possibly their motivations. Necros enjoys playing with Belt Boy a bit and keeping him in the dark to a degree, but largely his reasons for not explaining everything are strategic. If you've been enjoying my comic, please, please PLEASE leave me a like! Leave me a comment! Share it around! You can even enter my annual birthday contest! If you haven't heard about it yet, ALL properly-submitted entries win a prize! Just create a game avatar or some art based on my characters and e-mail it to me, and you'll get some art in return! Check out my website for all the rules and details, including the two GRAND prizes! -
TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Maybe B.O.N.N.I.E.'s calculations are rounded down...? 0% feels like it should at least be some kinda decimal, like 0.5% or something... This storyline has been a bit more dramatic than most; it addresses a lot of characters' baggage. Don't worry; this comic isn't going full-drama. Even the best comedic cartoons have their dramatic moments (If the ending of the "Jurassic Bark" episode of Futurama didn't make you tear up a little the first time you saw it, you have no soul). B.O.N.N.I.E. gets her name from being the Belt Operation Network Neohuman with Inexplicable Emotions, and this comic showcases part of her inexplicably emotional side we haven't seen before. As a computer program, B.O.N.N.I.E. can't disobey a direct order, but she does have a degree of agency, and she's very protective of Belt Boy. She's not just a warning system that tells Belt Boy when systems are offline or when he's been seriously hurt; she makes her own judgements, and tells Belt Boy that he's putting himself in danger. She's being a friend as much as she is a program.

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Enticia accepts Dino-Mo's accusations; conversely, Belt Boy can't accept defeat. I like how this storyline's been exploring Enticia and Belt Boy's characters in different ways. Enticia has always been a flawed and somewhat egotistical character, who has put distance between herself and others, and allowed people to get hurt in the process. Now, she's seriously considering what people think about her and trying to listen. Belt Boy, on the other hand, has always been a seemingly perfect boy scout-type, but while he's friendly with others, he's hard on himself. Now, he's sinking further into his delusion that perfection is attainable, and he's becoming blinded to what he's doing. On a related note, I mentioned in last week's commentary that there's a key difference between Enticia and her mother; namely that Rose Greene's flirtiness was a string of short romances, while Enticia's playing for keeps. Enticia gathered the whole idea of dating lots of boys in a casual way, but her mom never explained a whole lot about ending relationships, apparently.

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Still trying to regain access to my site. Between work, my comic, and Inktober, I haven't had much time to fix the problem, but I'm working on it. At least I can still post on social media, and I have some time freed up this weekend *Knock on wood*. *UPDATE* My site is updateable again! I spoke with my webhosting call center and got things taken care of. This week's comic and last week's comic are on the site right now. :-) Anyway, in today's comic, Belt Boy's friends continue their search, unaware that he's a good distance away from the school, with Necros gloating over him. Will they find him? Stay tuned, readers! You might look at the next-to-last panel and think that Necros' Necrobots are behind him. You might look and think that the shadow is Belt Boy imagining the Nightmare Necros he saw in his bad dream from the previous night. Well, it's honestly kinda both. Those are, indeed, Necros' Necrobots (the shape lacks Necros' eye scar, and the neck and head don't look all skeletal), but it is supposed to remind you of Nightmare Necros. Quite the spooky coincidence for Belt Boy!

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com So close, and yet so far... Belt Boy had a good plan, but it seems Necros realized exactly what he was up to. The question remains - how is Belt Boy going to get that disk away from his arch-nemesis? Belt Boy and Necros are both competant fighters with an array of gadgets at their disposal. Belt Boy has worked hard to not use his gadgets as a crutch in battle, so he'd be tough to beat if he were ever disarmed - or rather, dis-belted (assuming his pants didn't fall down around his ankles without his belt to hold them up). Still, Necros seems very much like a ninja, relying on stealth and - as one can see from his first encounter with Belt Boy - precise strikes. While Necros has less variety in his arsenal than Belt Boy, his devices are made for very specific purposes, while Belt Boy seems to have a gadget ready for any situation. And while that fact might seem to tip the odds in Belt Boy's favor, it's important to keep in mind that Necros' BUG-type Necrobots are used to spy, infiltrate, and sabotage (which means that Necros knows more about Belt Boy than Belt Boy knows about him), while his NRM- and MON-type Necrobots comprise a large, powerful army. In other words, Necros can out-fight, out-strategize, and outnumber Belt Boy. If Belt Boy wants to save his hide - let alone beat Necros - he's gonna need something to tip the scales back in his favor. Anyway, if you like this week's comic, be sure to leave a comment and let me know! Or better yet, share it around! I always like getting new readers!

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com At last! Belt Boy seems to be forming a plan. It may hurt, but not as badly as he'll get hurt if those Necrobots keep swarming around him! Can Belt Boy retrieve the portal generator disk, or will Necros finally triumph against our hero? Stay tuned, readers! After some delays and computer slowdowns, earlier in the week, I wound up spending most of my Thursday drawing this week's comic. I got pretty ambitious with that upper corner; I had to come up with four unique poses for Belt Boy to fit into four skinny little panels, and make it clear what was happening in each one, so it took me a few attempts to get the poses right. Also, as much as I love the character design I came up with for the Necrobots, they take a while to draw, because of all the details in their skeletally-inspired anatomy. If you're enjoying my comic, please share it around! I want more readers, and sharing is the way to make it happen!

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Just when Belt Boy thinks he's got the upper hand, it seems that his foes have the upper claw! How can he stop an army of Necrobots on his own? Stay tuned, readers! The title of this comic was intended as a reference to a song from my favorite movie, Who Framed Roger Rabbit* - not a song by the same name from the cartoon series Batman: The Brave and the Bold. However, one of Belt Boy's lines in the first panel IS a reference to Brave and the Bold**. While I've never been a big fan of Batman himself (I'm not a big fan of overly-brooding superheroes), I find his villains entertaining, as well as the other heroes that the dork knight teams up in every episode of Brave and the Bold. I also appreciate the fact that the series is a love letter to a bygone era of comics, the occasional fourth wall break, and the fact that one episode had Weird Al Yankovic and the Scooby Doo crew. While I'm very proud of my designs for the Necrobots, they are one of the hardest things in my comic that I have to draw, especially when I have to draw an army of them! Between that and panel size, you're not likely to see a whole bunch of them in one panel. One think I find fun is that BB's hair seems to smooth and re-frazzle with his mood. As a cartoon, his hair isn't just hair: it's plumage! By the way, am I the only one who imagines hearing the word "plumage" in Michael Palin's voice whenever they read it? If you enjoyed my comic for this week, please like it and share it! I also wouldn't mind some comments, even if it's something as simple as "Nice comic!" or "lol". I takes whatever praise I gets! *Oddly enough, Who Framed Roger Rabbit doesn't have a "?" at the end, because that's supposed to be bad luck for a film title in the movie biz. Fun trivia! ** It's also a good excuse to use alliteration, which I love to use.

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com It seems that B.O.N.N.I.E. has pointed out a flaw in Belt Boy's logic, but whether or not her comment will sink in has yet to be seen. Watch the angst, BB - you don't wanna go all "typical DC movie" on us!* After some computer hardware repairs, lots of predicted lightning storms, and me being exhausted, today's comic almost didn't get uploaded on time. I was tempted to go for another filler - I was thinking of having Belt Boy or TM follow up on Wednesday's Net Neutrality message in a filler featuring a parody song, turning Walk the Moon's "Shut Up and Dance" into a song about Net Neutrality. The phrase "Net Neutrality" fits into the song pretty easily. But I decided against it; I've been doing very few fillers in the past year or so, but I broke my streak a few times in April/May, and I wanted to stay on track. So, I kept Wednesday's message up and put this week's comic beneath it. Still, with all those delays, I did most of this week's comic in one night. It's nearly 5AM as I'm writing this, so I hope you appreciate my dedication to getting my comic updated on time with a proper canonical comic! Fight scenes are still a bit tricky for me, but I'm pretty happy with BB's poses in panels 2 and 4. I really wanted to make him look like he could use his own fighting skills AND his gadgets at the same time, rather than relying too heavily on one or the other, or switching between the two. Back to Belt Boy's angst that I referenced in the first paragraph, but putting jokes aside... I don't think of Belt Boy as a particularly "angsty" character. But I do think of my comic as being like a Saturday morning cartoon, and even funny cartoon heroes can have a breaking point, or moments of seriousness between the laughs. This is particularly true in today's cartoons, where Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, and even Gumball can have dramatic, poignant moments. Similarly, BB's been a bit less of a goofball since Necros appeared. Don't worry, though; he'll be back to joking and being zany soon enough. *Not Wonder Woman, of course. That movie rocked. :-)
