  1. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com If Belt Boy loves anything as much as justice, it's witty repartee - which, Cannon often reminds him, isn't pronounced "reh-party" (Actually, Belt Boy knows this; Cannon tends to tease his friends, but this is one way BB actually manages to annoy him for a change. ;-) ) I've been experimenting with poses and using the "line of action" in my drawings. What would normally be a pretty dull "talking heads" strip seems a lot more lively with Belt Boy pulling off silly poses, like in the last panel. A head's up; I'm going to be spending two weeks in San Antonio! There's going to be a filler up next week, and it'll stay up for the following two weeks. But keep your eyes on my social media, because I may have a little something for my readers! After my vacation, I hope to resume canonical strips on September 7th *knock on wood*.
  2. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Belt Boy's back, and so are his bad jokes! And it looks like he's pushing Necros' buttons now. But does he have a cunning enough plan to back up his quips? I'm glad I added in last week's strip, which I hadn't initially scripted. I was initially going to cut straight from Belt Boy addressing everyone about having them as backup to this comic, but I felt that the story would flow better if the audience knew he had some sort of plan, even if they weren't entirely sure what it was. If I didn't have Belt Boy talking to everyone and had more of the story through Necros' point of view, perhaps I could have made Belt Boy's having a plan be a total surprise reveal, but not the way I was writing things. Gonna be honest; in addition to it being easier to do, I like the aesthetic of having one panel not include any background or borders, like I did for the third panel of today's strip. I actually did the same thing two story strips ago. I made a goof in last week's strip; I forgot to give Belt Boy his black eye and cut on his face that I'd given him for the last few strips. Oopsie! It's been corrected now if you check my site.
  3. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Gelatin Boy may be slippery and silent, but he's got a few things to learn about being a spy...! Necros may not have quite as many gadgets as Belt Boy, but given that he created the Necrobots, is it any surprise he's got a holographic watch in his gloves? In case you were wondering, yes - Sugar Rush's face in the fourth panel IS a reference to the meme-ified Yellow Diamond "You CLOD!" face. Her expression looked a bit different before, but when I noticed it looked a little bit like Yellow Diamond, I decided to take it a bit further. It's a bit subtle, but I'm proud of the way I drew Dino-Mo in the last panel, with her leaning to one side, and having her hands be asymmetrical. I'm trying to get a bit more inventive with my poses, and I think it makes her look a bit livelier. Sorry for this being a relatively late update for the second week in a row; technical difficulties combined with my working and sleeping odd hours this week have complicated my webcomic work schedule a bit. I think things should be back to normal next week *knock on wood*, when my work schedule becomes a bit more regular.
  4. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Villains have a way of making the most harmless-sounding words seem menacing. What on earth could "The Playground" be? And why is Necros so sure that Belt Boy's friends won't be able to follow him? Stay tuned, everyone! I don't want to spoil too much, so don't expect a huge explanation on this week's strip. But I will tell you this; "The Playground" is a fairly recent name I came up with for something I had a vague idea of for a long while. I think that this new name will solidify some of my ideas, and I look forward to implementing them. Also, "teeter-totter" is a funny word. Tee-hee! We're in the home stretch of my annual contest! You have until May 19th to send me either fan art or a video game avatar based on my characters! If you were waiting until the last minute, this is it! Remember that EVERY properly submitted entry will earn you a prize of some sort in the form of art from yours truly, so everyone wins something!
  5. http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Necros tries to deduce how Belt Boy slipped away. Perhaps if Necros took Belt Boy's friends the least bit seriously, he'd have gathered intel on 'em and know who was responsible for his foe's escape. Sharp-eyed readers may notice a subtle shadow in the first and third panels, but it's probably nothing... Quick reminder: there's LESS THAN A MONTH LEFT to enter my art trade/contest! I'd like fan art for my birthday next month, and if you submit it according to the rules on my website, you're GUARANTEED some art in return! If I like your submission enough, you may win one of my two grand prizes! Check out the full rules by clicking the big button on my main page, beneath the latest comic!
  6. Comic 4/7/18 - "Halloweenie"

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Dodge isn't just a jock; he's also a fashion critic. But Necros can hurl more than dodgeballs and quips...! I'm not sure which I came up with first: Necros or the Necrobots. I honestly wish I could say I remembered how I came up with Necros' design, or why I decided on a skeletal theme, but I don't. However, they do remind me of a previous villain I drew up. When I was in junior high school, I came up with a superhero named Sidney the Mutant Scarab Beetle (I may put some form of him in the comic someday... unless you count a low-detail version of his face appearing on the top-left comic book cover in this strip: http://www.theheroesofcrash.com/2010Strip04-06.htm ). His foe was a mad scientist spider named Dr. Achnid, who had an army of spider-bots. The spider-bots resemebled their creator, much like the Necrobots resemble Necros with their triangular eyes, stripes, and skeletal theme. They used to look a bit more humanoid like Necros, too, until I changed their design to look scarier and more animal-like. The top three panels' backgrounds were initially a bit more sparse. When I saw how dull they looked, I added gradients to the first two panels. I didn't want to add a background, lest it distract from the action, so I used the gradients to bring focus to it instead. The dark edges of panel 3 were the result of me experimenting with a spray-paint tool in my program that I'd never tried before... I liked how it looked, and stuck with it. By the way, if you've been enjoying my comic, why not enter my contest? All you need to do is some artwork or a video game avatar based on my characters, submit them by May 19th, and you'll get some art in return! If your entry is the best, you may get a grand prize! The full rules are at TheHeroesOfCRASH.com, so check them out!
  7. Comic 3/24/18 - Surprise, Surprise!

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Necros isn't the only one with surprises...! Like I said, if Necros does have a stereotypical villain weakness, it's that he enjoys monologuing, but he's able to keep himself from going too far. Necros has no intention of revealing his entire plan to our hero. He gives Belt Boy just enough information to play off his fears. I asked some people on Twitter who were discussing onomatopoeia what the proper sound effect for a dodgeball would be. I got "Poonk" and "Bont", but I don't think that the sound would end in a letter as hard as K or T. In the end, I went with my original idea: "Poomp". What do you think? Is there a better sound effect for a dodgeball hitting something? Leave me a comment and let me know! Just a quick reminder; there's less than two months to enter my contest! The full directions and rules are on my site, but essentially, if you make a video game avatar or some fan art based on my characters, you get some free art by me! And the best avatar and the best art will each get a special grand prize! I haven't received any entries yet, so now's a great time to enter, yourself!
  8. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Necros isn't doing Belt Boy any favors, even if it is a villian tradition to offer some courtesies for the hero. While I don't mind the occasional cliche, gimmick, or typical plot device in media, I find it's a lot more fun to subvert expectations and turn cliches on their ear. Take Titanium Maiden, for example. It's a common cliche for the main heroine in a group to be a love interest who's feminine and wears pink, and Titanium Maiden is no exception there. But she doesn't look like a typical heroine; she looks more like a bodybuilder than a supermodel or the girl-next-door. Furthermore, muscular characters are often stereotyped as being brutish, dumb, or savage, and usually male... and TM is none of these. By combining two popular tropes that don't go together, I created a character that's more interesting than either one by itself. She's not the typical heroine, nor is she the typical strong character, and that makes her fun to work with. Necros, however, doesn't twist cliches around or enjoy playing with them; he outright rejects them. Necros is no-nonsense; he prefers to be effective and to the point, which is why he finds the "honorable villain" tradition of granting a hero a last request to be ridiculous. He cares more about winning than being honorable or dramatic. He sees no reason to do anything nice for his enemy - heck, as a bad guy, he sees no reason to do anything nice at all. If he has one cliche weakness, it's his tendency to monologue (partly because of his own ego, and partly because he enjoys taunting Belt Boy), but he'd never own up to it. And to be fair, Necros does dial back his monologues compared to other villains. He hasn't even revealed his entire plan or his "endgame" to Belt Boy just yet, whereas most other baddies might go full-"Bond villain" and explain the entirety of their plan and goals, and possibly their motivations. Necros enjoys playing with Belt Boy a bit and keeping him in the dark to a degree, but largely his reasons for not explaining everything are strategic. If you've been enjoying my comic, please, please PLEASE leave me a like! Leave me a comment! Share it around! You can even enter my annual birthday contest! If you haven't heard about it yet, ALL properly-submitted entries win a prize! Just create a game avatar or some art based on my characters and e-mail it to me, and you'll get some art in return! Check out my website for all the rules and details, including the two GRAND prizes!
  9. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Observant readers might be able to solve how TM and Cannon figured out where Belt Boy is. Can you? Have you been paying attention to the story and dialogue so far? If your detective skills aren't up to snuff, don't worry; I will reveal how they figured it out within this storyline, so stay tuned! Not much to say about the art for today's strip, but I do have a little bit of trivia: the streets of "Warburton/Hirsh" are named after the creators of Codename: Kids Next Door and Gravity Falls, respectively. Because I'm an animation nerd. And proud of it. This is the 700th canonical HoC strip! Woo-hoo! Hope you enjoyed the last 700 comics, and that you enjoyed the next 700! If you want to help me celebrate, why not contribute some art to my annual contest? Remember, the rules are on my main page, and ANYONE who submits a drawing or a game avatar based on my characters will get a prize! But there's only two GRAND prizes, so make 'em good! Check out the full rules on my website!
  10. Comic 3/3/18 - Sticks and Stones

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Normally B.O.N.N.I.E. trusts Belt Boy's plans, but to be fair, his judgement has been a bit off today... I've always drawn B.O.N.N.I.E. with sharp angles; I envision her as looking like Nintendo 64-style graphics. I think I may have been inspired by the opening to Super Mario 64, where you get to play around with Mario's abnormally-stretchy face. Not sure how stretchy B.O.N.N.I.E.'s face is, but no one's been terribly curious about that (yet...). If you've been following me on social media (and you should!), you know two things: first, I haven't been promoting my comic as regularly as usual this week, and second, that today's update is a bit late. To address the first issue, it's because the filler this week was regarding my cousin's passing. I felt a bit weird about reblogging that announcement all week, especially along with my contest announcement. Didn't feel right to me. As far as the lateness of today's update, it's because some winter weather briefly knocked out our power yesterday, and I decided not to turn my computer back on to complete my comic until the wind subsided. Well, better late than never; my comic's back up, and I didn't even lose the entire day! Anyway, just in case you've already forgotten, I want to remind you that I have my annual fan art contest, and EVERYONE who submits a valid entry gets a prize! Check out the rules by clicking the button on my main page!
  11. Comic 10/14/17 - Snowball's Chance

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Still trying to regain access to my site. Between work, my comic, and Inktober, I haven't had much time to fix the problem, but I'm working on it. At least I can still post on social media, and I have some time freed up this weekend *Knock on wood*. *UPDATE* My site is updateable again! I spoke with my webhosting call center and got things taken care of. This week's comic and last week's comic are on the site right now. :-) Anyway, in today's comic, Belt Boy's friends continue their search, unaware that he's a good distance away from the school, with Necros gloating over him. Will they find him? Stay tuned, readers! You might look at the next-to-last panel and think that Necros' Necrobots are behind him. You might look and think that the shadow is Belt Boy imagining the Nightmare Necros he saw in his bad dream from the previous night. Well, it's honestly kinda both. Those are, indeed, Necros' Necrobots (the shape lacks Necros' eye scar, and the neck and head don't look all skeletal), but it is supposed to remind you of Nightmare Necros. Quite the spooky coincidence for Belt Boy!
  12. Comic 10/7/17 - Headphony

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com A head's up; at the time of this initial posting (Early Saturday morning, after midnight), I am unable to connect to the website, so I'm just posting this week's comic to social media for now. I'm going to try again tomorrow; perhaps my site is being finicky (I'm hoping that's the case, *Knock on wood*). In this week's strip, Belt Boy seems to have underestimated Necros. Either he's not thinking straight after lots of stress and repeated blows to the head, or he's activated his own gadgets' self-destruct mechanisms by mistake in the past. Or both. Either seems pretty likely. Like me, Belt Boy's not good at lying. Still, he totally has his own mix of superhero theme music, so he could turn it on right away and make it so he's not lying. Might also be good for him to listen to my "Playlist of C.R.A.S.H." that I created on Spotify (And that a fan re-created on YouTube) last summer. If you're new to my comic and haven't listened to my playlist, I highly recommend looking it up on either site!
  13. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com So close, and yet so far... Belt Boy had a good plan, but it seems Necros realized exactly what he was up to. The question remains - how is Belt Boy going to get that disk away from his arch-nemesis? Belt Boy and Necros are both competant fighters with an array of gadgets at their disposal. Belt Boy has worked hard to not use his gadgets as a crutch in battle, so he'd be tough to beat if he were ever disarmed - or rather, dis-belted (assuming his pants didn't fall down around his ankles without his belt to hold them up). Still, Necros seems very much like a ninja, relying on stealth and - as one can see from his first encounter with Belt Boy - precise strikes. While Necros has less variety in his arsenal than Belt Boy, his devices are made for very specific purposes, while Belt Boy seems to have a gadget ready for any situation. And while that fact might seem to tip the odds in Belt Boy's favor, it's important to keep in mind that Necros' BUG-type Necrobots are used to spy, infiltrate, and sabotage (which means that Necros knows more about Belt Boy than Belt Boy knows about him), while his NRM- and MON-type Necrobots comprise a large, powerful army. In other words, Necros can out-fight, out-strategize, and outnumber Belt Boy. If Belt Boy wants to save his hide - let alone beat Necros - he's gonna need something to tip the scales back in his favor. Anyway, if you like this week's comic, be sure to leave a comment and let me know! Or better yet, share it around! I always like getting new readers!
  14. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Necros is a level of evil that deserves a lot of symbolic, artsy backgrounds whenever he speaks, if the last few strips are any indication. While Necros does love evil monologues, he's very careful about what he gives away to Belt Boy - moreso than most villains. He's given him just enough information to make our hero doubt himself or become paranoid, but he doesn't know how Necros is able to spy on him and his friends. Of course, we all know from the Gym-Nauseum storyline that Necros is able to use the cameras mounted on tiny BUG-type Necrobots (First seen 5/8/12, and first named 5/10/12), but he hasn't revealed this to Belt Boy. That's what seperates Necros from other archvillains; his speeches are more than simple brags and gloats where he reveals his plan to the hero. He knows just what information to withold so it's not used against him, and what to reveal in order to use his knowledge against the hero. His speeches are psychological warfare.
  15. Comic 6/3/17 - Quizzes and Tests

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Uh-oh! If Belt Boy's confidence was shaken before, Necros has REALLY struck a nerve now! If you recall the last storyline, you probably have a good idea as to how Necros knows about Belt Boy's quiz, but our hero is shocked that his foe has learned his secret. While little is known about Necros, I will say this: he generally looks down on a lot of superhero genre cliches, but even he can't resist a good villain monologue... as long as he's the one making it. A lot of heroes and even more villains enjoy hearing themselves talk, after all. But when Necros is able to turn his words into weapons against his foe, that's the kind of villain speech Necros savors most of all.
  16. Comic 5/27/17 - Test of Endurance

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com We now return to our regularly scheduled program! When we last left our hero, Belt Boy was nervously staring down his arch-nemesis, Necros. But stress and a recent battle have left our plucky protagonist a bit shaken, and Necros can smell his fear. Will Belt Boy be able to face his fears and his foe? Will his friends be able to hash out their differences? And for how long will Miss Sunflower be nursing that headache? The answers to these questions and more will be revealed in the upcoming installments of... The Heroes of C.R.A.S.H.! By the way, due to a lack of entries, the Generated Fan Art Contest has been cancelled. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Traditional Fan Art category. :-) Feel free to send me some fan art during next year's contest, folks (Although I appreciate fan art year-round!).
  17. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com As the title suggests, Belt Boy may not be near the proverbial frying pan, but he's definitely in the fire. An awkward argument between friends is nowhere near as tense as a battle for your life! I'm pretty happy with how the last panel turned out. The only thing I wonder if I should have done differently is skip the red/green coloring. You'll notice that Necros, once again, has the evil shade of lime green by his face, while BB counters it with red. There's but ONE WEEK LEFT to enter my birthday fan art contest! I'll be posting the winning entry a day late, since I'll be engaging in some birthday festivities that will have me away from my computer. If you want to enter, do it by 11:59 PM on May 19th! Check out the Rules page for more info!
  18. Comic 4/8/17 - Necros Returns!

theheroesofcrash.com We return to the canonical comics after last week's filler, and we now see who has Belt Boy so worried - none other than his dreaded arch-nemesis, Necros! I colored the first panel lime green because if Disney (and Tumblr) has taught me anything, it's that lime green is the color of evil. Ursula's voice-stealing magic, Scar's steam columns at the beginning of Be Prepared, Maleficent's dragon flames and glowing spinning wheel... all lime green. And there's more lime green-colored villainy in those movies. Try googling "Disney villains lime green" and see what you come up with! While Necros does have a nose beneath that mask (He may be evil, but he's not rocking the Voldemort look), I thought that it kinda ruined the skull effect of his mask to show the shape of his nose when drawing him from a side view in my simplistic cartoon style. Consider his mysterious noselessness a style choice. It seems rather apt that this is the six-hundred and sixty-sixth canonical comic, and we're witnessing the return of the strip's nastiest villain so far, especially when his nightmarish shadow looks so demonic. I assure you that the shadow is merely a reflection of Belt Boy's fear in his head, and that Necros isn't actually casting a demonic shadow. But even if that shadow is nothing more than a visual metaphor, Necros himself is an imposing figure in person, and Belt Boy knows full well that his bite is even worse than his bark.
  19. TheSlugCar is the winner of the Generated Fan Art Contest, who created generated avatars meant to resemble Necros and the Supreme Master. As my contest entrants know, the prize for this category is a drawing based on their generated fan art, and this is it! Don't let Necros' harsh words get you down, TheSlugCar - I think the designs are pretty cool (And Necros doesn't seem to like much of anything, anyway). Thanks for your submission! And in case you're wondering, canonical comics return next week!
