Current events have kind of been the elephant in the forums of late. I am sorry if the pandemic is a topic people would rather not think of here. But I cannot stop thinking about it.

The world is at war in a way it hasn't been my entire lifetime. And this time, the front line consists of some of the most ordinary and ignored people in society. Delivery workers. Grocery store employees. Sanitation personnel. Health care specialists. Usually all but invisible, they are the ones that keep us all alive.

My sister in law is a practicing M. D. My brother is severely immunocompromised. They are both at grave risk. And because of the nature of the crisis, they cannot come close to one another and will most likely not be able to for months to come. That's just two people in my near family that have had their lives turned upside down. My spouse has three family members working in health care as well.

I myself am not in the front lines. I might yet have the opportunity to, if things go bad enough. I am a paramedic in the reserve of the Danish Army and may be called on to serve if the situation requires it. I devoutly hope things will not go that bad, but if they do, I will be ready. Until then I give of my excess money to where people may need it.

To all of my friends here: Be safe and take good care of yourselves. Isolate yourselves, not just for your own sake but for the sake of everybody else as well. Do not trust the disinformation. And if you need to, share your problems with the rest of us. I am certain there are people here who are willing to help you.

My brother is a scrub tech.   OR staff are being repurposed as there isn't as much call for surgery now as normal.  He is working like 4 or 5 cases a week.  One of the things that scrubs are being used as at his current hospital is monitoring people going in and out of rooms that have C-19 cases.  Scrubs spend a lot of time making sure that sterile fields are kept sterile, so checking that a person PPE is good is more or less what they are trained for.

Please send him my best regards, and thank him for his service.

Yeah, sorry about that. Hopefully, we'll fix it this November.

I've heard surgeries are being curtailed to temporary quick fixes, to be revisited later.

That is what my brother is saying as well.

I understand. China's initial response was sub-stellar as well. But our toddler in charge is very visible and vocal and incredulous about anything that affects cash flow.

It is being weirdly politicized, but not by one party; although the right seems to take it far more lightly. One article cites golf courses, where young liberals follow the social distancing as they play, renting multiple carts for example, and the conservative old cronies sharing a cart, shaking hands, and so on. Please people. This virus does not care what you believe. It just wants to eat you, one cell at a time.

This article was interesting, a positive correlation between wealth and being a dangerous vector.

I'm glad we are doing what we are doing. I fear that it will not be enough.

Somewhat less risky (though far from risk free) but equally important are those responsible for making vital supplies.

My sister and father work in a factory (my sister as a member of the Quality Control team, and my father as a mechanic) that makes swabs, including the type used in the corona-virus test kits. They're both working overtime these days as the company tries to get as many swabs as it can out the door as quickly as possible. I have to admit that I never realized before how important their work could be; I'm now quite proud of them.
