Many humans (and most Florida residents) refuse to put even that much planning into their actions

Wait.  You are supposed to plan things out ahead of time.  Whoa.  This changes everything.

Marginal survival in our pre-history tended to weed out the non-planners. In our era, you can effectively skate through life in a half-assed manner employing minimal foresight. Not well, but adequately enough, flowing with a herd of others doing the same, that you don't stand out as failing, most of the time.

I think we learn this in school, were often the subject matter is a lesser thing we learn. Put in enough effort to get by. Passing is good enough. You'll never need to <whatever> again (but without it you won't be capable of reading articles written for adults ...).

I weep for our future.

As I child I hated a December birthday as I got fewer presents than my siblings born in April.  Got lots of presents labeled "Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas" from people other than immediate family.  Aunts and Uncles mainly.

BREAKING NEWS:
U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division has issued orders today to Sergeant Major S. Claus, recalling him to active duty, on 24 Dec 2022.
Sergeant Major S. Claus, known to use the alias “Saint Nicholas”, “Kris Kringle”, “Father Christmas”, or simply “Santa”, is a reserve Parachutist with 1,743 years of service and well over a Billion Jumps.
He specializes as a tactical operator of the next generation DEC-25B, Cargo Airborne Delivery (CAnDY) Carrier.
The DEC-25B is contractor-modified and fully equipped with Cargo Antlered Navigation Equipment Sensors (CANES).
It has also been retrofitted with eight high-powered, air-cooled Rangifer Tarandus carrot-fed generators.
As a single seat cargo delivery platform, it is capable of vertical delivery of high-value items, take-off and landing without pilot controlled lighting (PCL).
These unique specifications, coupled with the additional Public Affairs skill sets possessed by SGM Claus, classify the entire deployable package as a low-density, high-demand (LD/HD) asset.
Also recalled, were Pvt1 Dasher and Dancer, Pvt E-2 Prancer and Vixen, Pvt1 Comet and Cupid, PFC3. Donner, and Construction man Blitzen (recently selected for Corporal)
Specialist E-4 Rudolph is also authorized to report for duty; however, he must first successfully complete his physical , which he has failed three times due to a medical condition related to his nose.
Although the above Personnel
are on orders for only 24 hours, it is anticipated that they will submit a travel claim for 24,901 miles at .56/mile, using a POV. Suitable Government transportation is not available.
As a Special Airborne Operations Unit-SAO, each member is granted a high level of uniform flexibility, as well as relaxed grooming standards.
Per diem has been modified to include large quantities of hot cocoa and cookies.
Government travel card use has been authorized.

U.S. Army?

For years the Toys for Tots people have insisted that Santa is a Marine Reservist

So who is wrong?

The Army? The Marines?

Has Mr Kringle been collecting two pay checks?

Well, it's possible to be a retired US Army Sgt. Maj and be a USMC reservist at the same time.  He does his USMC time during the run up to Christmas when he gather toys.  He then gets activated by the Army to do the delivery.  Joint operations and all that.

Of course! If you don't plan, you miss out on the fun of watching those plans fail! For even more fun, when your plans fail, you can come up with new ones on the fly, which probably won't work either. Also, when everything's over, be sure to make one last plan that incorporates everything that happened, so you can say everything went according to plan.

Fact check, you can retire from one service and sill have US military non-reserve affiliation? I've never heard that before. Some segments gripe about 'double dipping' when you leave the service and come back in a non service capacity, seems they'd go ballistic with a retired and still reserve/active status.

I had to brief a general who was called out of retirement and reactivated, but at that point, for the duration of his special assignment, he was not retired.

Have a happy "Two Turtle Doves" day.  Unless you happen to be someone that has a "French Hen" day.  It's also Boxing day and the feast of Steven.
