I am sorry to hear of your troubles. I wish I could offer you more than I already have. The only thing I can think of is maybe trying a Netflix subscription or some streaming service along with a set of headphones? That way you can watch something else on either comp or tablet while Mrs. Prof lets steam out of her ears with Law and Order.
(This one time I was sitting with my wife and we were both only paying halfway attention to the TV when the announcer informed us that next up was Law and Order: SUV. After we both stopped howling with laughter, I said to her that I bet the rest of the crew on that TV station wouldn't let the poor announcer forget that for the rest of the month. My wife responded that she doubted they would let the hapless woman forget that for the rest of her life. Afterwards we started discussing what Law and Order: SUV might be about and decided that it featured cops that refused to work cases unless they somehow involved SUVs and that the entire trial at the end of the episode was entirely focused on which SUVs were better, the ones the cops used or the ones the criminals had committed their crimes in.)

@The Old Hack, last night's Wurstfest was a smashing success. My son came over and cooked it up for us, due to my inability to stand for long.  In short, the Bockwurst you bought us was great—I'm having leftovers for breakfast! In all, we had the Bockwurst, imported Nuremburg Bratwurst, Siegi's Weisswurst (for @mlooney's Currywurst, which my skeptical son wound up absolutely raving about afterward—I had to send home half a bottle of curry ketchup with him), and a German noodle dish with Polska Kielbasa that my son cooked up. Of course, there were the requisite sides: sauerkraut (which Mrs. Prof had to cook, since our son absolutely refused to touch the stuff—go figure) and fried sliced potatoes with onions. Wonderful stuff, with a very chaotic IndyCar race to go with it.
Thank you again for helping to make this possible!

N++, I've had bruises move down my leg.  And in once case down my arm.  Still, would have someone with paper on the wall saying "Dude is a Doctor" have a look at it if they don't go the freak away.

To the nine hells with boxing gloves.  Go for one of these:

Fig 34 looks like It might be a Good Thing.  Of course, the spikes on 32 have their charm.

Figs 31 and 34 would cause damage to your hand if you struck anything more solid than another human (such as a wall).  32 appears to be the best option for both damage and safety.

I don't have an Amazon wishlist, but I'll start one just to put your good health on it.  Keep fighting the good fight, Prof.

At the very top of mine is you getting better. Concentrate on that, old friend. All else will follow from there.
I hope so, too. You have not had an easy time of it. But we can at least hope that the surgeons there show more competence and dedication than your last spine doctor did.

Prof, let me make a few things clear for you.
It is NOT a matter of 'deserve' in any way or form. First, I am reading this because I want to support a friend in pain. Thus, I am doing this by choice. Next, you do not deserve this, either. Health problems happen and they are not subject to our control. And unfortunately some doctors are just not as supportive of their patients as they should be. I am very sorry to hear of your trouble with yours.
I am still hoping to hear of improvement in your situation. If nothing else, your podiatrist seems competent and sensitive to your troubles. We will just have to see for the rest. Please give my regards to Mrs. Prof and tell her that we all appreciate her efforts. And take care of yourself, hard as it may be at times. This too shall pass.

Certainly.  It's just rarely done because there isn't a "town doctor" anymore in most American cities.

Prof, don't be so worried about it. This is the venting thread, remember. We're here to offer what support we can, and if it helps, it pleases me no end that our small gestures of support have taken at least a little of the strain off of you and Mrs. Prof. Keep writing here when you need to and we will offer support as we are best able. I think I speak for the entire community when I say you are well beloved here and that your contributions are a not insignificant part of what makes this a good place to be.

Thanks for the offer, but I don't know how much good it would do. We're not in an area where public transportation is easily reached, and services such as taxis, Uber, and Lyft most likely wouldn't come out to our suburb. Garland and Rowlett, Texas are part of a pretty large area of sprawl (read: low profit/high rates before they'll even consider coming out here). We're just going to have to grab Mjolnir and hammer something out between the two of us.

I was pleased when I heard about that court case.  The Oxford comma has always been useful in delimiting lists.
For a simple proof that it eases the ability to distinguish things, try writing a sentence that contains a list within lists, omitting both the Oxford comma and the Oxford semicolon.  It's difficult to make sense of things, which is why it is proper to include it.
Rule Number One of writing: if you can't understand the meaning of the sentence properly after reading it once, you broke one of the rules of grammar.

For those of you people that think the AP guide is the say all, end all of modern usage, sorry, it's not.
The Oxford comma is legally required.  I don't care what the AP guide says.

We can look at our own history to know that different cultures developed unique fighting styles with various weapons, and for europeans at one time, honorable combat involved both sides lining up their troops on the field. What Klingons used for weapons and how they fought would likely have worked for Klingons just fine. But comparing how a Klingon fights versus how a Human fights would be like that scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indiana Jones was confronted by a swordsman trying to be intimidating and Indy just pulls out a gun and shoots him.

Engineers in a secret lab developed the means to bring biological specimens forward through time.
After bringing forward several dozen plant samples from the Late Carboniferous period, the team went out to celebrate.
Unfortunately, they didn't secure the equipment properly.
By the time the lab crew returned, a swarm of Dragon Flies with two foot wingspans had destroyed their research.
When all the damage had been cleaned up, the director could only look at the crew with disappointment and say...
"Time Flies.  While you're having fun."
