Michael Palin does a lot of travel shows, and one of them he went to British Columbia to a lumberjack jamboree. A quote: "I sang a song about a lumberjack..."
  2. Story Wednesday, July 31, 2019

Since you're in Florida, which is technically in the same country as California, we probably think of a vest as a sleeveless outer garment. A Brit would call this a "waistcoat" and pronounce it as "weskit". A "vest" would be underwear, often for a girl. We might see Dan work with Britspeak after Van shows up again. I cut down trees, I wear high heels Suspendies and a bra --The Lumberjack Song "Suspendies" or "suspenders" are garters in Britain. A gentleman holds up his trousers with braces, thank you very much.
  3. Story Wednesday, July 31, 2019

Not until Ashley arrives. At this point, it looks to be a party of seven; no definite sign Susan or Diane are coming. However, I might point out that Elliot and Ellen's car, small as it is, seats four.
  4. Story Friday July 26, 2019

But still, Ellen sees trouble here, and is there anyone else who really knows Elliot better than Ellen? I can see Ashley getting feelings for Grace, but the real danger is that Tedd will get feelings for Ashley. The only other girl Tedd ever got along with before was Sarah, but they fell out for a long time. And as her tutor, Tedd is going to be spending more time with Ashley than with Elliot. Plenty of opportunities to go pear-shaped here.
  5. Story Friday July 26, 2019

And yet Grace had that dream about being naked in class. I believe that dream happened after MV5.
  6. Story Friday July 26, 2019

Grace doesn't casually go around in the nude now, which is a shame for whoever delivers the pizza. Of course, given the type of experiments Tedd does, nudity happens sometimes, but that's probably not going to happen at the party--and maybe Tedd and Grace will rig those curtains again.

  8. Story Friday July 26, 2019

Gosh, Elliot will be so shocked when he finds out Rosa is dating a woman by the fifth s Anyway, I fear that what's being foreshadowed here is that Ashley is, as I've long suspected, the Transitional Girl. Transitional to what is another question, since Dan seems to be toying with making Susan gay-all-the-way--hey, is Susan the Rosa of EGS? Grace has been voicing doubts about Ashley since the beginning of Squirrel Prophet, and now Tedd's coming up with doubts. And speaking of shipping, does anyone see Ashley and Grace?
  9. Story Friday July 26, 2019

Not before mine, though. I only had to look up one of the lines. "Idlewild" was where Krushchev did land at least once. It became "Kennedy" in 1964. The late Fred Gwynne was one of the stars of that show. However, I have binge watched four seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
  10. Story Friday July 26, 2019

There's a holdup in the Bronx, Brooklyn's broken out with fights, There's a traffic jam in Harlem That's backed up to Jackson Heights, There's a scout troop short a child, Krushchev's due at Idlewild Car 54, where are you?
  11. Story Friday, July 19, 2018

What Sam thinks he should do about Sarah when he isn't with Sarah may be quite different with what he actually does when he's with Sarah. There's a word for this: normal. I think it's more likely Sam would tell Sarah he has magic or that he was born female than "just friend" her yet.
  12. Story Friday, July 19, 2018

Or could it be that Sarah lost that pesky virginity? Nah...
  13. NP Friday July 19, 2019

Maybe he should go to law school...

I think Rich comes across as a guy who loves to argue.
  15. Story Wednesday, July 17, 2019

The Uryuom ability with languages is just as ridiculous as Douglas Adams' babelfish, or the Universal Translator in Star Trek: It's there to make the story work. If you want further proof, check out the comments Dan has been making in his latest NP series, Superhero Science.
  16. Story Wednesday, July 17, 2019

Because Uryuoms have no ear openings to stick babelfish into. Kind of like iPhones with no phone plug.

But the best kind of Yamato is a Yamato nadeshiko.
  18. http://egscomics.com/comic/party-036 Too angry to function.
  19. Story Wednesday, July 17, 2019

I think so too, but until recently, Tedd needed gadgetry to transform. Elliot can look like any female human, but his only male forms are himself and himself as a cat-person. Ellen has only copied females (which might be why she couldn't copy not-Tengu.) This is why I rate Grace as the most versatile shapeshifter.
  20. Story Wednesday, July 17, 2019

Maybe to encourage Ashley to accept Grace's shapechanging? Five of the Main Eight now have ways of taking the forms of other people in various ways: Tedd (to Grace and, potentially, the other six); Elliot (can create new forms more or less on the fly); Ellen (copy spell); Sarah, who at minimum has a watch that allows her to take Tedd's form; and Grace, probably the most versatile shapechanger. Speaking of cats, does Grace still have that catnip plant she got at her last birthday? Or has Jeremy eaten it all? If so, I hope Tedd has stocked up on yarn.

But make sure there are no dogs around!

Plus they can finally teach Ashley to speak other languages, such as French or Uryumoco.

  25. NP Monday July 15, 2019

Serious discussion of Superman goes back at least to 1971, when Larry Niven published an essay called "Man of Steel, Woman of Tissue Paper". I haven't read a Superman comic for a long while, but I do remember that in at least one Superman didn't have bullets, etc, bounce off his body or some invisible force field, but phased out so that they passed through him. Sound familiar? Dan has given Immortals the same power. I think I remember the Mythbusters episode where they proved that the CGI underwater machine gun bullets in Saving Private Ryan were B.S. One of the standard techniques in firearm forensics is firing into a quite-reasonably-sized tub of water in order to recover bullets that aren't distorted from impact. You can get projectiles to move underwater for longer distances--really big projectiles. The 18.1 inch monsters the Yamato fired were designed to do exactly that, hopefully converting a near miss into a penetrating hit under the armor belts of other battleships, and this did happen on rare occasions with smaller cannon shells and shot. Actually counting on this turned out to be a genuinely amazing crackpot theory that failed horribly. However, you can build rockets that will have much longer ranges underwater; the Russians build rocket torpedoes designed to catch up with modern nuclear submarines, which are usually faster than surface ships and most conventional torpedoes.
