The closest thing to an “alien biosphere” that humanity has encountered to date has been Australia, with its radically different species (e.g. all mammals there were marsupials). We should probably take a lesson from what happened to it. -
Yes, actual freedom fighters would be more interested in overthrowing the system of Mage Monarchy than in installing one of their own as a King. This is less a bid for liberty than a bid for a higher position in the pecking order.

Given that we know that Uryuoms are restricted from high technology on their side, their goal may be to acquire tech that would aid them in overthrowing the Royal Mageocracy. Watch out for them trying to acquire nuclear weapons. As for Magical Royalty ruling here, since First World nations are all either Republics or have only token monarchies (British Commonwealth, or any other present European monarchies), the Mages do not hold the public leadership positions, but if DGB is any indication, they do pull strings from the shadows.

All of this talk of buying businesses or other investments overlooks the main reason that this trio had chosen gold as their portable store of value: They come from a place whose fiat currency is unrecognized by any authority on this planet, and which is therefore unexchangeable. Thus, they must carry their money in the form of saleable material.

The “group of elderly ladies” disguise is a good choice for deflecting suspicion, as long as they don’t pull anything too flashy in public view.

Yes, Rincewind always knew when it would be best to put some distance between himself and trouble.

This may not be the first time that they have sold off some gold, merely their first visit to this particular dealer. Making multiple small deals of several thousand dollars each would attract less attention than trying to unload a quarter million dollars in gold all at once.

Episcopal cats?

When dealing with a society which uses fiat currency, and with which your society has no formal relations, it is quite sensible to carry some mundane-but-valuable material such as gold to convert into their currency. Despite inflation, the value of one Troy ounce of gold has tended to hover around one week’s income for a middle-class household ever since currency was invented.

Or whatever fabric those Uryuom clothes are made from.

Oh, sorry, that was in response to Darth Fluffy and the Pharaoh discussing Napoleon’s reputed short height. -
If Grace is dressed for warm weather, then it seems that we have skipped all the way to at least the end of March if not into April.

The French Imperial Foot was 1/3 meter long (33.33 cm vs. the British foot of 30.48 cm). Thus, being five feet, two inches tall in French feet was five feet, eight inches in British feet, which was average for a Frenchman born about 250 years ago. -
So Grace is like an ogre?

Trump is probably better described as the Wizard—a charlatan who has his supporters convinced that he can work magic, while he gets other people to do his dirty work. -
“Sick” as slang definitely dates from the period when Dan was a teenager. As for the cleric wanting Nanase to read the glyphs, he probably only knows that she and the glyphs are from the same other world. He is only speculating that she would be familiar with the particular script/language.

Many of those people would like to become the new Powers-That-Be themselves, or else somehow maintain the ensuing power vacuum such that there would be no Powers at all for the near future. -
Clearly a reason to have a place to make it locally rather than deliver it from Italy, then.

Even among introverts, Rhoda is very much a shrinking violet.

Anarchy isn’t about there being no law—it’s about there being no unaccountable authorities. It is often said that governments are granted a monopoly on coercion for the purpose of law enforcement and peacekeeping. Anarchy is when nobody has a monopoly. -
