  1. Story Monday October 1, 2018

No. The ban on time travel is supported by meta reasons (specifically, Dan being afraid Tedd would acquire mean to time travel and will use it to undo any problems) and therefore unlikely to ever be lifted. That was a sarcastic joke, my friend. I guess I need to borrow Grace's JOKE sign. I did get it was joke, but reacted regardless because I wasn't sure everyone else would realize it. Added on list of retcons. I wouldn't be surprised. EGS Special Edition Strikes Back. Again. Lest we forget, SARAH SHOT FIRST! Actually, the thing we need to not forget is that Sarah kissed Elliot when he was FV5. Right, that too. Although personally I find Susan here really out of character ... meanwhile, Sarah, given her recent "moving" on kinsey's scale ... As a fan of Gargoyles, it's a little odd Dan hasn't thought of the obvious solution to this: make it so the chains of causality can't be broken (in other words, make it so it's impossible to change history). ...Preferably without the blatant predestination paradoxes the Gargoyles writers liked to throw in. What would be the difference then? Remember that the instant you inhale in past, you are changing it. Actually, wait, you already changed it by reflecting photons the moment you appeared. I'm not sure about the caption; it messes with the composition of the panel and sounds a bit clunky. The part of me that always wants to know when things happen is glad to have the timing clarified, but strictly speaking I'm not sure it was necessary: does it really matter if Diane missed a class entirely or was merely late for two classes? Based on the discussion here, yes it does matter.
  2. Story Monday October 1, 2018

We did have the equivalent of "Homeroom Teacher", but no specific time period attached to it, part of class or not. There wasn't that many news, so if that shortened first class by few minutes it was considered acceptable. (We definitely didn't mind.) Attendance ... hmmm ... I guess attendance was same case, as I'm sure it was being done, although my memory considers weird that it would be done every day ... probably unreliable memory.
  3. It's obvious that's Elliot and Ashley. ... no, I'm not sure which one is which either.
  4. Story Monday October 1, 2018

To be fair, bell ringing is NOT an event which would need to be shown unless story relevant. But you have a point that if the comics would be SUPPOSED to depict Diane spending whole hour there, then the bell ending the class WOULD be story relevant and therefore should be shown. No. The ban on time travel is supported by meta reasons (specifically, Dan being afraid Tedd would acquire mean to time travel and will use it to undo any problems) and therefore unlikely to ever be lifted. Homewhat? .... reading ... there is special period so students can pledge allegiance? Like, every day? Isn't it little overboard?
  5. Story Monday October 1, 2018

Either we just believe the alternative happened, which is pretty much what we were doing, or go with the first explanation and she only spent like 5 minutes talking to herself. Well, it's not like there is some narration "after class" on this comic. It could easily be understood like it's directly after this one and she was following Rhoda but stopped to stare at a window. And yell.
  6. Story Monday October 1, 2018

I'm wondering how Diane could stand in the same place for an hour without someone asking what she was doing. Maybe like The Shadow she now has the power to cloud men's minds, meaning people don't register seeing her? Or maybe Dan didn't consider that when he decided to make the last panel. It IS possible she is somewhere where noone else looked for whole hour ... possible, but unlikely.

http://egscomics.com/egsnp/assorted-18a-012 ... is that boy supposed to be someone we recognize? And yes: the bubbly tea effect description is what people think alcohol will do. Pity one of additional effects of alcohol is not noticing how it doesn't. Still, I would expect Susan to prefer just the lifeguard's effect.
  8. Story Monday October 1, 2018

... was she talking to herself WHOLE HOUR? Also, yeah, her 12 year old self considers missing class bigger problem than current Diane ... makes sense.
  9. Story Wednesday September 26, 2018

In fairness, though, an automobile crash killing >100 people is rather less common than an airliner crash killing >100 people. And, as I already mentioned, those tend to be reported. (Ok, seems there was no traffic accident killing > 100 people, but incidents involving over 100 cars with over 100 injured are likely to be reported even if number of people killed is smaller. Example, 29 November 1991 Interstate 5 in Coalinga, California.) It could be argued that professional drivers - for busses and truckers - should done the same as pilots. But yeah most traffic accidents are caused by people in cars who are not professional drivers. Also, again, traffic accidents of truckers are more likely to be reported, at least if they involve blocking some important highway for considerable time (which they often do).

There is difference between "safer" and "safe". For example, receiving death threats is generally safer than receiving death sentences. ... hmmm ... true, I might be underestimating number of this kind of activists due to them not being so public. That's not the part I'm arguing with. If only political correctness was really just about this ... ... uuuhhhh ... we got pretty far from the etymology of word "bimbo" ... maybe we should try to stop. (Maybe I should try to stop as you seem to be trying already.)

I must disagree. Martin Luther King was exceptional but he was middle class at best and his power stemmed from the bottom. What is more, he was also planted squarely beneath the oppression he was fighting. He was not the equal of a white man in a similar position. I did say it's not from top, so I'm not sure what you disagree with. However, you have point about him being under the oppression he was fighting. I mean, him being under it is obvious, but you have point that that's something new - having results WHILE being under the oppression. In historical cases, the results came only after the oppression was no longer in progress. The "monkeys" and "junglebunnies" are dehumanizing because of other meaning they have. The N-word, as far as I'm aware, had ALWAYS just one meaning. Well, ok, it also used to mean the color, but that's hardly dehumanizing ... (EDIT: ... although I did said that in case of N-word, it might've worked. Like, in helping challenging those assumptions.) ...the 'logic' in that sentence makes my brain hurt. The logic is based on the similar idea that having 2000% growth of user base is easier if you start with five people than if you start with thousand. ... although maybe "visible" progress would be clearer word choice. You are really underestimating these women if you think they are not desperately fighting for themselves. Or why else would you constantly be reading of arrests being made and brutal punishments inflicted on the offenders... I didn't meant to underestimate those women. I wanted to point out the number of activist who are NOT fighting for them but are choosing other groups to fight for ... safer ones. Fighting for rights of women in traditional Arabic countries is less safe than fighting for rights of women in US ... ... I'm not sure what is controversial about that. Canada showing concern over the imprisonment of women's rights activists is logical and expected for modern democratic country. Saudi Arabia cutting relations in retaliation is logical and expected from conservative absolute monarchy with elements of theocracy.

Go pick any of a large number of Black people in the US and call them the N-word. Use a statistically significant amount, say, a thousand or so. Then note down how many of them weren't offended and you'll have a decent starting idea of the percentage involved. If you want to be sure, pick Black people at the bottom of the social pyramid, they should not be hard to find. In fact, just go into the middle of the Chicago slums and shout the N-word as loudly as you can about a half dozen times. The reaction should tell you everything you need to know. Only warn me before doing it, I want to stand back a bit first. I expect answers like "Say it again, I dare you!" More seriously, I meant that the ones we actually hear the call for stop using that word from are not the ones at the very bottom. Those might not like it but if it would be just them, the majority and the decision makers would just ignore them. Like, was Martin Luther King Jr. at bottom? No, he was outstanding student, skipping classes, he was attending college, had B.A. in sociology and B.Div. (that's something to do with theology) and then Ph.D. He was working at Church, wasn't unemployed or minimal wage employee on fast food chain. That's NOT bottom. And there is not that many people like this either. They told the bottom they don't need to tolerate it, that they can AFFORD to not like being called the N-word ... and they also told them that their position will get better if they wouldn't be called that. And THAT is what the bottom really wants (unsurprisingly). The word is just symbolic target, it's not fault of the word that they are at bottom. It might work with the N-word, but too much activists now are focusing just on the words, up to the point when they fail doing any real progress in their cause. To be fair, it's harder for them to make any real progress because objectively, the people they fight for (or at least claim to fight for) are NOT in as bad positions as African Americans were in 1955. (Except women in traditional Arabic countries, but not many activists are fighting for them.)
  13. Story Friday September 28, 2018

To be fair, it seems to be less for "don't want to be virgin" reasons and more like "I want this relationship to progress, look, next step is losing virginity". I'm sure ANY of the boys she was with last year would be ready to help her with it any time. ... however, I find unlikely she never did. I think she actually did that pose. In the jacket, which lowered the effect a little
  14. Story Wednesday September 26, 2018

Well I meant that each and every separate airplane crash is reported as an individual news item, while car crashes are not. You hear about every single airplane crash in detail, while you tend to hear only about local car crashes unless a celebrity is involved, meaning that most car crashes are merely statistics, emotionally speaking. You know in your head that fifty thousand Americans died this year in their own cars, but it doesn't "feel" like it's a hundred times more than the number of Americans who died in airliners, due to the differences in media coverage. While it rarely gets to same level of detail as airplane crashes, the "local" may be quite loosely interpreted. It might be close, it might involve celebrity (and there is LOT of celebrities), it might be far but involve someone local (there are plenty of news on topic of "coach with local people crashed in definitely nonlocal place"), it might be considered exceptional for some reason ... or there is cucumber season and they didn't found any other news. Even with usually bigger number of causalities in airplane crashes, I would expect the number of reported deaths from airplane crashes and number of reported deaths from car crashes will be similar. ... which will still create incorrect perspective, true, because the actual number of deaths are not similar but with car crash deaths being much bigger.

Are you SURE it's large numbers? ... and, actually, seems not to be at the bottom either, although it's true it's not top which makes it new already. In history, the usual way of change was first, get to the top, second, do the change. (Often, getting to the top included cutting off current top. Specifically their heads.) The idea you can skip first step is very new.

This has been true as long as government has existed. And it is very hard to completely erase a concept. There are still records of the Pharaoh Hachepsut, for example. Still, certain rulers made really good tries, like those Chinese Emperors that decided to reset history by burning all existing records to assure a new Year Zero starting with them. It didn't really work, no-one believed it, but they did destroy numberless invaluable and important texts and works of literature. True. Attempts to erase something is not new and current wave is more like return of what was here just few centuries ago ... ... also, yes, it never worked as well as the ones doing it though. On the other hand, lot of important texts were lost, and even more stuff which wasn't written in first place.
  17. Story Friday September 28, 2018

FIRST? Why? Obviously, she must realize this first, Lucy later. If ever. Combined with how hard is to change that sort of reputation, I don't think it's worth it to try to clear herself in those four months. Almost surely mortal. One elf parent is more than enough. ... when that comics appeared, it looked obvious the "You're joking" refers to the "you are joking with wanting real relationship". However, now we know that she wanted real relationship on start and Lucy knew it. That makes it less clear ... ... meanwhile, the look on Lucy's face is DEFINITELY her being worried there would be no more double dates.
  18. Story Wednesday September 26, 2018

Probably badly. He did get caught by the police shortly afterwards, so maybe the neighbour got on the phone to them very quickly after he left. ... I though some policeman noticed the car while he was unloading the kids. ... not that automobile traffic deaths are not reported. I think the reason is different here: people are afraid of airliner crash because they are not driving it. In car, when driving, they are under illusion that their superior driving ability can save them from collision (which is generally incorrect for two reasons: first, they don't have superior driving ability, second, even if they would have, there are plenty of crashes where it wouldn't help them). Cheapest to implement would be some combination of weight/seatbelt sensors--any weight on the seats sufficient to be a possible human yet with seatbelt disengaged could trigger a "no seatbelts" beep when the driver door is open, while any engaged seatbelts combined with a more-than-newborn but less-than-adult weight (e.g. anything between 5 and 40 kilograms) could trigger a separate "child in seat" beep. There are plenty of cases when it's totally OK to have child on seat while opening driver door. Although ... maybe warn if you are trying to lock car with someone inside? Of course, sometimes seatbelts are used to secure baggage (much better than leaving it unsecured, in fact).

... yeah, some language changes doesn't make sense. Probably most of them. But don't worry, if you start forbidding using some word in name of political correctness, it will get MUCH WORSE. ... for example, after the long process of words for sexual acts becaming something not polite to say, we now got to point when you can just say "they are doing it" and everyone knows what you mean. ( ... although ... saying "she knows him" was already clear two thousand years ago ...)

Words like "like", "um" and "uh" are useful in written text for same reasons emoticons are: they indicate something which is not visible from other words. You might actually use MORE "um" and "uh" in writing because in spoken language you can just pause a bit, but in written ... well, there is "...", and in some cases you can add stuff like [dramatic pause], but sometimes the "uh" is better.
  21. Story Wednesday September 26, 2018

Yeah ... lot of people have trouble thinking logically when in similar situations. I might be less likely to think logically myself if in such situation instead of reading about it. I'm sure I would realize it later, though. You know, when already late. Even like this, I'm not sure what place would be good to safely put them without risking ... I'm just sure there are plenty of places like that Hmmm ... maybe hospital? School or community center if some after-school activity is in progress there, with some luck I might be able to drop them to some organizer and be away before that organizer realize those kids are not supposed to be there. For bonus points, he might be convinced I just mixed up the place and they are supposed to be at similar after-school activity elsewhere. Disadvantage: there are just limited hours when this is possible, and requires knowledge of what hours it is around. I'm not exactly sure how he explained himself to the neighbor.
  22. Story Wednesday September 26, 2018

I wonder what kind of hardware would be mandatory installed in all cars (including cars of bachelors, hey, what if they get lucky later?) to prevent this. Another kind of camera? Some detector which would recognize the baby and make noise (waking it up) if you try to close doors with baby still in? ... air conditioning? There would still probably be safer courses of action for him. While leaving the children on random road will likely mean police will find him sooner than the children, there must be plenty of places he can safely put them and make sure they call home immediately. Then, floor it. ... obviously, if the children got good look at him, he might be caught regardless ... so, obviously, he also needs some sort of costume which makes the children overlook how he actually looks. Santa Claus? Clown? Darth Vader?
  23. When compared to this, she kinda does. I'm pretty sure Dan stated that Greg was in his late twenties so that would limit possible relation speculation to Rhea being his long lost younger sister, half sister who's mother abandoned, or a cousin, but I think those plot points have already been used. Did they? Sure, we have Nanase and Tedd being cousins, and Diane is the half sister who's mother abandoned (of Susan), but who is long lost younger sister? Carol Brown? She's older and wasn't really lost. Ellen? She's same age and didn't really exists. Van, the younger brother who might be considered lost if you don't count his mother is with him?
  24. NP Thursday September 27, 2018

Pretty weak, considering Dan is obviously drinking it deliberately. Smart (under)pants? Piece of clothes which increases intelligence as long as it's visible? That would have potential ... Intelligence is not that much useful if you are unable to focus ... on the other hand, being unable to focus makes relaxing easier
