One thing I didn't mention last time: once I'm caught up, I won't be updating this one all the time, just every once in a while. This thread would get too cluttered otherwise. 2005: (Bold equals new character) Dan: 23 Tanooki: 14 Noah: 11 Dr. Cox Genie: 4 Amanda: 1 Dr. Germahn: 1 Greg: 1 NP TOTAL COUNT:

Because I'm a madman. A very bored madman. Introducing... The Official EGS:NP Character Count! This count will not differentiate between canon and non-canon appearances, as that's too much work and I just want to have fun, dang it. It will, like the main count, keep track of each year's totals, however. This might be tricky, as I'm pretty sure there are a few years in there that have no NP at all, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Also, I will not be highlighting any "main characters", as the very nature of NP lends itself to highlighting lesser used characters, or whomever Dan feels like drawing at the moment. I'll probably still do tiers, however. More to help me keep track of things than for any real aesthetic reason. Let's start with 2004: Tedd: 30 Grace: 26 Sarah: 24 Elliot: 20 Nanase: 17 Justin: 16 Amanda: 15 Ellen: 13 Susan: 8 Dr. Germahn: 5 Tess: 4 Tiffany: 4 Dark Sarah: 4 Alice: 4 Lisa: 4 Whiteshirt Elliot: 3 Bill: 3 Melissa: 3 Jeremy: 2 Dan: 2 Duck: 2 Drake: 2 Shop Monster: 2 TC: 1 Minion: 1 Noah: 1 Travis-san: 1 Unusagi: 1

There wasn't. That was a mistake caused by two years in my notebook being recorded in very similar colors. With most characters, it's not a problem because I can see what order the colors are in, but with as few appearances as he's had... Long story short, that should be 2008. Fixed. Any hey, while we're here... Mon. Jul. 10, 2017 Tedd: 697 Pandora: 94 Elliot: 883 FULL COUNT:

  8. What Are You Listening To?

Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode I was caught off-guard by the intro to it in a YouTube video and then I had to listen to the whole thing.

"Grand" is usually reserved for direct parental lineage, though. After all, it's "Great Aunt", not "Grandaunt".

  11. Story, Friday June 23, 2017

Oh good, so it wasn't just me. I wanted to talk about something else, too, namely Dan's renaming of this part of the story. Am I the only one who prefers the original "Fairy Great Godmother" over the now official "Great Fairy Godmother"? The latter sounds like it's describing a Fairy Godmother who is exemplary, while the latter sounds like it's describing a Great Godmother who also happens to be a fairy - a situation that I believe is literally the case here.

I'm actually kind of disappointed. Since I finished my big marathon recount, we've yet to have a comic with more than two characters in it, and we've only seen four characters total.

Of course, as soon as I say I'm back on track, my internet craps out for a week. Didn't feel like taking my notebook to work. Mon. Jun. 12, 2017 Sarah: 624 Pandora: 83 Wed. Jun. 14, 2017 Sarah: 625 Pandora: 84 Fri. Jun. 16, 2017 Sarah: 626 Pandora: 85 FULL COUNT

Penny Arcade isn't on there either, and they're freaking huge. Also, is it weird that Shortpacked! is included but It's Walky! isn't?
  16. Story Wednesday June 14, 2017

Story arc title: Sister III. For some reason I thought it would be about Elliot and/or Ellen again. "They" could refer to anyone, given that we don't actually know how old Raven is. My guess is an ancestor of Susan and Diane's somewhere back, but I'm really pumped to learn more now.

This is easily plausible. Sorry for the double post. Formatting got weird and I can't figure out how to delete posts on this forum.

It wasn't so much a transfer of power as it was merely a shifting of prominence in who was worshiped. It was not in-universe, in other words. You won't find any stories of Tyr handing over the reins of power to Odin. Indeed, many of the myths that survive to today have recast him as Odin's son. What you would find, anthropologically, is the people of the region gradually shifting the focus of their worship from Tyr to Odin, and then later to Thor. This happened in Greece as well. Demeter and especially Hestia are much older than Zeus (perhaps why in the consolidated Olympian myths they are his older sisters), and even Athena and Poseidon were considered paramount deities in their own respective regions before the cult of Zeus came along and everything was more or less homogenized. Athena was even made into Zeus's daughter specifically to reduce her importance. The Romans did it, too. The original Capitoline Triad (the three most important deities, named for their temple on Capitoline Hill) was made of Jupiter, Mars, and Quirinus. Many folks haven't even heard of the latter. He and Mars were later supplanted by Juno and Minerva, to form the Capitoline Triad most people would be familiar with today. The Egyptians did it multiple times. Atum, Heka, Amun, Ra, Amun-Ra, Atun, Amun-Ra again...

There is some evidence to suggest that in times of antiquity, the prime deity of the Norse pantheon was actually Tyr, and he was slowly supplanted by Odin over time. Odin was himself in the process of being replaced by Thor when Christianization began to take place.

Sarah was actually behind Ellen for a very long time, and even slipped behind Nanase for a bit once. It's only recently - as in, the last couple of years - that she's retaken her #4 spot. 2014 was a banner year for her, what with the Card Tournament arc and all, but Ellen came back strong in '15 and they've been going back and forth ever since. Also, you'll note, Ellen herself only passed Sarah literally a week before. I don't know. I've considered doing that, but when one considers things like Question Mark, which was an NP story line later added to the main archive and thus included in the count, things can get hairy pretty quickly.

Diane's reaction (in both panels) to being turned into Nanase is adorable. Looks like Charlotte was right about that massive woman-crush.
