And how do you do that while still obeying rules against using your cell phone while driving?
  2. Monday, January 30, 2017

Yes. Early = 70-72 Mid = 72-77 Late = 77-79 Or something along those lines. Personally, I tend to see 1980 as being, practically speaking, more a part of the 70s than the 80s. But the terms can overlap; if you'd prefer to think of '77 as late, feel free.

As a veterinarian, I always advocate for giving the amusing names to your pets, and giving your kids names that won't get them teased in school. For example, we have clients with last name Brown who have dogs named "Charlie" and "Buster". I have a client with the last name Walker whose son was born in the mid-70s. He said they named him Luke, because they figured by the time he got to school, no one would remember that silly sci-fi movie.
  4. Story: Monday January 30, 2017

In Elliott's case, Magic thought that Elliott was supposed to get girlie spells, but that was only because of how he got magic. It didn't actually reflect either an affinity or a part of his personality, which left Magic trying harder and harder to please him, until finally Elliott changed enough that it did. (At which point Tedd believes Elliott will finally get some non-girlie spells that reflect other aspects if his personality.) If Catalina's suspicion becomes public, I could definitely see a lot of people trying to get her to kiss them.....
  5. Things that make you go WTF

I know several costumers who would love the yards and yards of silk fabric a parachute would entail!
  6. This picture, and especially the hover text / mouseover text, made me think of Dan and the lack of sketchbooks we've been seeing for months now. Jennie is right, I think for just about any artist, sometimes it's good to just do a sketch, not a strip or even a panel. I really miss seeing stuff like the collection of preliminary sketches for George.

I just love the way Kitty is holding her hands in that last panel. She looks so much like a cat, which, of course, suits her to no end. That's in quotation marks, do you have an attribution?
  8. What Are You Ingesting?

Could you check the ingredients for me? If they have nothing "partially hydrogenated" and no "high fructose corn syrup" then they may be a rebranding of the ones I was talking about, Aldi is famous for that sort of thing.
  9. What Are You Watching?

I recently listened to the Big Finish audio play Doctor Who - The War Doctor - "Only the Monstrous" After that, I went to the library and checked out ALIEN and I, Claudius to see some of his early work. I now have another reason to want to watch them, and am wondering how many requests the library has had for them in the past day or two.

Ah, but we're not talking about eliminating inertia, only gravity.

Oh, look, our very own continuity error! Considering how long EGS has been going, there are a surprisingly small number of them. Yes, or I could easily see Edward having to order a wand with the Create Spellbook spell in it. Hmm, can a wizard learn a spell from using a wand, or only by watching a person actually casting it? Can you ask as a guest? I think Dan has gone back and forth about allowing anonymous questions.... True, although once Tedd got into magitek, I can't see him passing up the chance to Look at a new spell, even if he didn't know there was anything special about doing so at the time. Are you sure you didn't create it years ago and then forget? I'm pretty sure I did that with a few email addresses and forums in the past, sometimes discovering the fact by getting a "There is already an account linked to that address!" message.
  12. Story Friday January 27, 2017

Just a semantics note, but one that's important to some. I'm told that some trans folks really dislike being called transgendered, because it makes it sound like it's something that was done to them, rather than being a part of who they are. Actually, from what I've seen of Tony, I suspect that Tedd actually being a girl would be one way to get Tony off Tedd's back. That's another option. I could also see him deciding between talking to his dad honestly and keeping everything to himself (and his friends). Or whether to back off and allow the current magical status quo to continue, or to push on until magic does change, in the hopes that the new version will be closer to his dreams. That was the distinction Tedd was making when he referred to changing his default form. That is the form that he will be in if all magical influence ceases (unless she uses the same spell to change back, probably what's meant by not exactly permanent). That's what makes it such an unusual spell, and why his thinking he can now make wands that would change other peoples' default forms was so frightening a thought. If he changes someone else's default form, then it will not wear off, ever, and any enchantment turning them back to their previous form *will* wear off. Tedd has an interesting option now....he can put himself in his "girlie" default form, and then zap herself with the TFG back to his usual male form. If she does that every day, then should magic suddenly change and Tedd be stuck in default form, it would be her choice which form to be stuck in. However, given how gender fluid they are, I really really hope Tedd doesn't end up stuck in either one. That would be at best a bittersweet ending, at worst a real downer, which doesn't really fit the spirit of EGS.

So far as I can recall, the only mention of a magic shop within canon was Jerry's comment about saving Susan a trip to Ye Olde Magic Shoppe. I'm pretty sure the Oblivious Wand Waving NPs were not canon. Despite being quite loud, we don't really know whether Susan's fairydolls could do any actual damage. Flashbang may be a good analogy. I suspect it might be arranged so that Tedd is around when Justin is given a spellbook. The Verres house is probably the most secure location Justin would be allowed in, so it makes sense to give him the spellbook there. If Justin gets any sort of warning at all, it would be easy enough to text Tedd, "Tedd! Your dad's giving me a really cool book, wanna See? ;-)" Then Tedd quietly emerges from his basement lair, just in time to watch as Edward makes the link. There's actually no reason to think that Tedd's dad would have any objection to giving him a spellbook in front of the whole gang, really. Whatever Tedd is, it's such a rarity that "none remember", so it wouldn't make sense for Mr. Verres to object to the others seeing it. We don't know either way, it was just an interesting scenario to contemplate. :-)
  14. Story Wednesday Jan 25 2017

That was kinda the point of the quote. Khan had been a villain on Earth before contact with aliens led to space travel. He was frozen for hundreds of years, and when he woke up he was almost immediately marooned on the surface of a planet. He'd only been in space a very brief time, and he still tended to fall into the sort of combat tactics useful on the two-dimensional surface of a planet. The very pattern of thinking that annoys you was what Spock was pointing out. The battle in question was, if I recall correctly, being fought just outside a nebula, and Khan was moving as if the surface of the nebula were the surface of a planet. But it's been a while so I'm not 100% on that. The nebula gives multiple other points besides the two ships.

Where would she get the spellbook from? Would she want Tedd's dad, and thus the DGB, to know about her abilities? What we really need is for an Immortal to hand out a big stack of spellbooks.....Rhoda, Justin, hopefully eventually Sarah and Catalina, maybe a special one for Tedd or maybe he doesn't need one.... Although, in my head canon, Justin discovers a book on his shelf disguised as an elaborate third-party supplement for a gaming system he's not all that fond of, and it turns out Pandora had already linked a spellbook to him and just didn't tell him. Whether he finds it by accident, or Ed tries to link a spellbook to him and discovers he's already got one, leading to a search for it, is up to the reader/writer. :-) I'm picturing her showing up at, say, school (college?) with genuine cat ears and tail. and her classmates all just assuming she got more elaborate fakes than her current sweatshirt.
  16. Story Wednesday Jan 25 2017

It's a pity Tara can't stick around. If she has any experience fighting humanoids in aerial combat, she could probably contribute quite a bit. It's a lot easier to make sure you're unobserved indoors, but the ceiling would be a limiting factor. They should do some training indoors and some outdoors, ideally, so they're ready for either situation. She has *got* to quote Spock, if she does...."His pattern indicates two-dimensional thinking!"
  17. Story Wednesday Jan 25 2017

Grace is obviously considering fighting vampires. I don't think it's definite that she's ever dealt with any so far, and the way that she's struggling with a hypothetical seems to imply that she hasn't encountered any yet. Her nightmare makes it clear that she's still struggling with the idea of having to hurt anyone, even a fire goo griffin that's eating Greg's arm. If anything, it's a relief to Grace to find out that at least one potential enemy is not going to turn out to have a family and a chance at redemption. (Technically, I suppose an aberration could have a family, but if so they would surely be better off without the aberration in their lives.)

Hmm, I guess I have no idea what a hockey puck is made of, so I don't know. Guess we'd better stick to crowbars.

You can make a ship weigh almost nothing, but you can't make its mass any less than it is. Moving it around is still going to take energy of some sort.o
  20. What Are You Watching?

Let me guess. She had amnesia, and only just remembered who she is and that she loves him. It's almost always amnesia, because that seems to be the only reason anyone has come up with for someone to disappear for years and then show up again, without making the character into the jerk of all jerks for not telling their loved ones they were alive. The only other plausible reason is that they were kidnapped and held against their will, and even the cheesiest shows seem to realize that being held captive for years might just change a person, likely not for the better, and most don't want to deal with that.
  21. NP: Monday, January 23, 2017

Actually, a hockey puck, dropped from orbit, could probably do a decent amount of damage. The trick would be aiming accurately enough.
  22. NP: Friday January 20, 2017

Pixies are like Kender but with powerful magic. Anyone who's read Dragonlance will be shuddering at the thought.

Um, that makes no sense to me. Whatever velocity you are trying to reach, it costs more to reach it if you are fighting both inertia and gravity than if you are fighting inertia alone. You can figure out what direction you need to be pointed in, and arrange the gravity blockers and your thrust to best achieve it. Treat it as if you're already in space, and you know that at a certain point, a rocket is going to turn on pointing a certain direction, with a certain amount of thrust, and figure out what you need to do to accomodate and/or counteract that. But you're not comparing that situation to not having to fight that rocket at all -- you're comparing to having it running, working against you, the whole trip! Picture a rocket launch from the surface of a planet, but with a separate rocket engine glued to the top of the rocket, pointing straight up. There's some mechanism which will always keep it pointing straight up. Will it take just as much fuel to reach orbit with that engine firing as it would without? Launching with gravity in effect is the same as having that engine constantly firing downward. Launching without gravity is turning that engine off. Yes, you still have to figure out how to get to orbital velocity, but that's just a matter of figuring out what direction and rate to fire engines to achieve it. Orbit is basically just constantly falling at an angle that matches the curve of the orbit. As was pointed out, it should be possible to overshoot the target height while gravity is blocked, then make use of gravity to gain acceleration to help achieve orbital velocity while burning even less fuel.
  24. Things that make you sad.

Yeah, I did it while the other two vets were still there, and when I got home my kitty gave me some good snuggles. I called my folks and my sister to let them know. It's weird not having to get his leash and harness on him and bring him to work. I'll have to figure out what to do with his beds, whether to reduce the number of litter boxes, donate leftover food, etc. On the plus side, I can go straight from work to stores, club meetings, CE, etc. without figuring out what to do with him first. I'm sure eventually another little pup will come into my life. Probably another kitty, too; she'll be even more alone now. But for now, I'll leave things as is, definitely st least until after my trip.
  25. Pinup: Monday January 23, 2017

Indeed, my hair is mostly dark brown, but it has orange-red highlights in sunshine, more of a very light brown in other lighting, and the grey is more visible in yet others. I can definitely believe Ashley having hair with the right sort of reflective properties for it to take on surrounding colors!
