  1. http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com For the second non-consecutive time, the winner is Ken Bailey! It was a tough competition this year, with pieces from lots of talented webcomic artists (whose work you should totally check out!). Many thanks to all our contestants: Ken Bailey, Anna Frohling, Michael VanSlyke, Ave Messer, Corey Kramer, Shaney, and David Fleming! Also, a special shout-out to MaroonDrops, who sent in fan art based on Enticia's backstory for my birthday, knowing full well that it wouldn't be a valid entry for the contest (since she won in this category last year, and the rules say you can't win in the same category two years in a row). Next week: the winner of the Generated Fan Art category!
  2. http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Now presenting MaroonDrops' wallpaper request from last year: A C.R.A.S.H. Yearbook Page! Once again, it's taken me months to get a desktop wallpaper prize done, but as always, I hope it was worth the wait! If you go to my Downloads page, there's two versions of this wallpaper: one with signatures and one without. I wanted to make sure this yearbook page captured all my characters' personalities through their poses, their superlatives, and their signatures. If I ever get my comic published, I might reuse this image as a cast page at the front of the book. Belt Boy, as usual, overdoes things, with his signature "using a fan to make his cape blow in the wind" pose and writing/drawing WAY too much around his photo. B.O.N.N.I.E. snuck her way into the photo, too, not that BB minds. Cannon's using his classic finger guns, minus the wink. This pose shows off his bravado and womanizing, while subtly hinting at his "power" (or more accurately, his namesake weapon). Whoever owns this yearbook seems to have scribbled Cannon's phone number out. Dino-Mo's next, rather than Titanium Maiden; this IS a yearbook, after all, so it's alphabetical order. Dino-Mo's showing off her power (and how she got the second of her two superlatives), but she plays it cool better than Belt Boy or Cannon. Dodge tends to be outgoing without being aggressive (whenever he's not playing dodgeball, at least), so I gave him a simple pose where he's subtly showing off his biceps, but not being a stereotypical, showboating jock. Enticia's a major flirt, so rather than use a pen, I figure she'd sign her yearbooks with a kiss. Even her lips in the picture are pouting just a little bit - usually, I draw my characters' mouths off to the side a bit (a la 1990's Sonic the Hedgehog), rather than centered. Gelatin Boy embarrasses himself a lot, so I decided to draw him mid-sneeze - at the "ah-" before the "-choo!" His shadow has a slight orange tinge, since he's translucent gelatin. His larger shadow shows he's a bit closer to the camera than everyone else (Making up for the fact that I drew him bigger than everyone by mistake). Jackknife, of course, is holding the sneeze powder he used on Gelatin Boy, and also flexing to show his muscles and his arm blade. Of course, seeing as several other heroes drew on his face, and the yearbook's owner didn't ask for his signature, no one's impressed. Also, I drew him smaller so I had room for his arm, and moved his shadow to show that he's close to the wall behind him. If I knew how to use a blur tool more effectively, I'd have used it for Sugar Rush's photo, so I'll chalk it up to superheroes having invented cameras built to photograph speedsters. The heart for her and Dodge seems appropriate for Valentine's weekend (a happy coincidence). I love when Titanium Maiden pulls off that heart pose (Based on Spanish Olympic weightlifter Valentin), so I just had to put that in here. The adorable amazon signed her name and colored her heart with a pink pen - in hindsight, I regret not making it a glitter pen. Finally, Unk, as the most chill person in the comic, has the most "normal" pose out of everyone. If it weren't for his ripped shirt, you'd think it was just a normal school photo. I'm particularly proud of the backgrounds in this photo; I wanted everyone to have their picture in front of one of those traditional blue-gray, slate-looking backgrounds that EVERYONE uses for school pictures. Of course, since it's almost 3 months until my birthday, I'm holding my annual birthday contest! ALL valid entries get some art from me, and you might even get to decide what my next desktop wallpaper would be! I've attached a quick rundown picture to this post; full rules are on my site!
  3. http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com I was pleased to get quite a few great entries for my annual Birthday Fan Art Contest this year! I have to admit; I was a little suprised to see the winning entry on the last day of the contest, and from a newcomer, no less! But his entry not only showcased some great art, but it captured Belt Boy's personality. Belt Boy would TOTALLY post a villain capture to social media with puns, emojis, and hashtags! Thanks again, MaroonDrops; for winning my contest, you get to choose the next desktop wallpaper that I draw! Congratulations! I also want to thank the other entrants this year. Due to some continued technical difficulties (my computer tends to freeze off and on during the summer months), I'm still working on the sketch prizes for the runners-up. I've got two down, two to go, so please be patient, folks! Enough about that, though; time to show off the other entries! David Fleming, creator of the totally awesome webcomic Ms. Rocket, drew this picture of Titanium Maiden striking a pose, proving that if anyone knows how to draw a buff, reheaded superheroine with a ponytail, it's him (He's had practice in that very specific category, after all!). Shaney, creator of the webcomic Heroes of the World Beyond (Or HOTWAB for short), drew Belt Boy and his faithful flying fish friend, Caped Cod. I don't see many drawings of BB's piscatory pal, so this was nice to see. Previous winner CD Rudd, creator of the webcomic SailorSun Dot Org, drew his characters and mine attending some sort of gala event. Wouldn't be the first time he's drawn my heroes in formalwear, since they cameoed in the big wedding scene that concluded his comic. And of course, it wouldn't be the annual birthday contest without an entry from longtime fan YouWillNeverKnow, who created some iconic movie posters based on my heroes' costumes. Has any other artist graced my Fan Art page as often? Guess I will never know! Unless I go to the Fan Art page and count, of course. But I don't want to. If you liked these pictures, be sure to visit David, Shaney, and CD Rudd's webcomics! All three of them are in webcomic communities alongside The Heroes Of C.R.A.S.H.; Ms. Rocket and HOTWAB are part of the Collective of Heroes, and SailorSun is part of the 910CMX community.
  4. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Sorry, folks, but I don’t have a new strip today. My computer has been running low on disk space, and it won’t let me even SAVE a new comic. I tried deleting a bunch of things after doing some backups, but it didn’t make much of a dent. I also couldn’t expand my C drive either. So I’m going to try to buy an external hard drive in the next few days (I have one for backups, but I’m looking to get one that would remain attached to my computer to expand the disk space). The only reason I didn’t get one sooner is because I also had to get some car repairs done this week. Hoo boy, when it rains…! I’m hoping to get things fixed before I need to post the results for my annual Birthday Fan Art Contest. With any luck, I may even be able to fix things in the next week. If, for any reason, I’m unable to fix things, I will post the winning contest entries on social media (along with all runners-up) and contact their artists, personally. So if you’re still planning on entering, please do so! To be honest, some fan art would certainly cheer me up about now!
  5. Comic 3/23/19 - In Over Her Head

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Enticia gets some surprising support, Ken Bailey sends some fan art that's NOT for my contest, and I restate the rules for anyone who WILL enter. Also, my internet's back! Whew, that's a lot to unpack in a Twitter-friendly blurb... Let's take it from the top. Due to some local internet outages, I was not able to update my site until I got it back this afternoon. Thankfully, I was able to post a picture of the latest comic (Taken from my camera's phone), as well as the other pictures below. Remember, folks, if my site hasn't updated, and I didn't announce it beforehand, check my Twitter, Tumblr, or Facebook posts; I'll usually be able to fill you in there. In this week's strip, Enticia recognizes what she's learned from her friends and from Dino-Mo. When Enticia says that Cannon made her realize her relationships have been hollow, she's referring to their discussion WAY back in strip 232. Belt Boy and TM have gained her trust slowly, but listening to her backstory throughout the Even a Rose Has its Thorns story certainly helped. Dino-Mo, of course, told Enticia off in the Gym-Nauseum storyline. I do like getting experimental with the format of my comics, and I like how I set up the three-part panel in the upper-right, turning the connections between word balloons into panel gutters. That was actually pretty fun! In other news (But not NEW news if you've been keeping up with my Facebook group!), I got some fan art that is NOT a submission for my annual Birthday Fan Art Contest that's currently going on right now. Why? Because the fan art in question happens to be from Ken Baily, who won last year with his awesome picture of Titanium Maiden alongside his own creation, EnergyGirl. However, the rules state that someone can't win in the same category for two years in a row, so unless he did something in the Generated Fan Art category, anything he submitted would be ineligible. But knowing that, he still decided to draw TM and E-Girl again for funsies, and because it IS for my (and my comic's) birthday. Thanks again, Ken! If YOU want to enter my contest, check out my website for the full rules! Ken got to pick the next HoC desktop wallpaper, and you could do the same this year! Even if you don't win, all valid entries get some art in return, making it a bit like an art trade as well as a contest. Good luck!
  6. 2/16/19 - Belt Boy's Loose Lips

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Belt Boy lets some sensitive info slip. Also, my annual fanart contest begins! Belt Boy's slipping back into breakdown mode again, and his background in panel 3 shows it. That dark cloud is supposed to be reminiscent of the background from his dream at the beginning of this storyline. There's more I want to say about this scene, but I don't want to reveal too much just yet. All I will say is that the thing that Belt Boy has inadvertently foreshadowed is something I've been planning to mention for years...! My birthday's coming up in just three months, and what I'd really, REALLY like is some fan art and fan avatars! My annual birthday contest has begun once again, and there's two ways to submit entries: 1. If you're good at art, then you can draw/paint/sculpt my characters and e-mail it to me at heroesofcrash-at-yahoo-dot-com with the subject "Traditional Fan Art Contest". 2. If you're not good at art (or don't have all the supplies you need), you can create a custom character or avatar in a video game or on a website, so that it looks like one of my characters. You can then send an image to that same e-mail with the subject "Generated Fan Art Contest" EVERYONE who submits a valid entry will get some art in return; the Traditional category winner will decide my next desktop wallpaper, the Generated category winner gets a filler based on their art, and all runners-up will get a surprise sketch! You can check out the FULL rules on my website at http://www.theheroesofcrash.com/ContestRulesAnStuffPage.htm for more details. Make sure that you submit your entry by May 19th, and have fun!
  7. 9/8/18 - Cipher Contest Conclusion!

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com I'm finally back from my long vacation! It was good to get away from it all, but I'm happy to be updating my site again. I want to thank everyone for their patience, and to congratulate Twitter user StarSumiaki on deciphering the most coded messages and winning my contest! Here's the deciphered letters for everyone else, with answers at the bottom. My comic will resume next week! I was planning on having more heroes' letters, but to be honest, I was also having lots of fun on my vacation, and I was having trouble thinking of other locations that posed good enough puzzles. I was thinking of having Dodge be in Santa Fe, and mentioning his dads having enjoyed songs about it from Rent and Newsies. Wasn't sure what to do for Dino-Mo. I was considering having Unk spend his vacation at my favorite childhood vacation spot, but quite frankly, it's gotten too crowded in recent years and I want to avoid giving it any publicity. In any event, I wound up just doing the seven heroes, and that wound up being more than enough anyway (Only two puzzles got solved at all). I initially was going to have Dexter showing off postcards, but I wound up having B.O.N.N.I.E. showing off digital messages, like status updates. It allowed me to use different-sized text boxes, and I like how it suggests B.O.N.N.I.E. ran a decryption program. It was also fun doing emoji versions of my heroes (Probably inspired by my having played Disney Emoji Blitz earlier in the day).
  8. I think my comic explains it well, but here's the basic summary: 1. I'm going on vacation for two weeks, so I won't be unable to update TheHeroesOfCRASH.com until I return. 2. I'm holding a contest in the meantime. 3. I will post coded messages from my characters on Twitter; crack the code and send a reply tweet telling me what city/state they're in. 4. Send me the correct answer first to get a point. The Twitter user with the most points gets a drawing. If you want to get into the details of how to crack the code, read the comic. Good luck! Oh, and also, check out my comic characters' cameos at Sailor Sun Dot Org! It's on my Links page!
  9. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Well, folks, here it is: the winning entry for my annual contest's Traditional Fan Art category! In this incredible drawing, Ken has drawn Titanium Maiden alongside his own muscle-bound heroine, the Mighty EnergyGirl (Or just "E-Girl" for short), and they seem to be dealing with an ornery offscreen onlooker! Given that TM's courage seems to be overriding her usual sense of self-consciousness, there's a good chance that the hidden heckler is probably Cannon. The Mighty Energygirl is not like most superheroes or superheroines; for one, she's a lot beefier than most (Save for Titanium Maiden and She-Hulk), and for another, she's a middle-aged housewife, and finally, she frequently outshines her husband, the reality-altering superhero known as CartoonistMan. While I don't have a link to his work (He doesn't have a traditionally-archived webcomic site), you can check out his art on Facebook, on the page entitled "The Mighty EnergyGirl" or in the group, "Fans of Mighty EnergyGirl and Femtastic". Thanks, Ken, for the amazing artwork! The runner-up is longtime fan YouWillNeverKnow, with some redesigns of Miss Sunflower and Sister Sledgehammer. Appearing less cybernetic and more demonic, Miss Sunflower looks so scary, you'll probably think twice about chuckling at her name! You can check out the picture below. As promised, Ken Bailey and YouWillNeverKnow's artwork will soon be added to the Fan Art page. As winner, Ken will get to choose what I draw for the next downloadable desktop wallpaper, and runner-up YWNK will receive a digital sketch. Next week, I'll be unveiling the winner of the Generated Fan Art category winner, so stay tuned!
  10. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com My comic is having its annual contest, and EVERYONE gets some art in return! Either make some art or a game avatar based on my characters to enter! You can read more details by clicking on one of the attached images, and you can view the full rules by clicking on the button on my main page. Give it a try! It's loads of fun! Diligent readers may recognize that one of the two images is my announcement filler from last year, but with a new, introductory, 2-panel filler comic preceding it. Due to some family emergencies (and Valentine's Day), I wasn't able to get much work done on my comic until Friday night. And even then, I had to contend with another family emergency that had me driving around for a few hours until 1am, and some computer issues. But being the faithful comic creator that I am, I managed to stay up all night to finish this filler. True, I may have stayed awake more than 24 hours, but I haven't reached a delirious state of exhaustion or anythKUMQUATHIPPOPOTAMUSBOOGIEOOGIEOOGIE! ... I may need to lie down...
  11. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com I did this contest reminder filler for this week for two reasons. First, it's been a busy and exhausting week at home after work, plus I was having some technical difficulties the other day that kept me from working on the comic as long as I was hoping, so I decided to throw out something a bit shorter. Second, I really want to remind people about this contest. There's little I would like more than fan art for my birthday. It doesn't cost you a cent to send me this present; just the time it takes to make a drawing, a sketch, or even a quick game avatar. And EVERYONE will get a sketch from me in return, or even one of the grand prizes! So check the full rules on my main page and send in your submissions!
  12. theheroesofcrash.com It's time for my annual fan art contest, but this time there's a twist! ALL entrants will receive a prize! Want the full rules? Well, here they are: How to Enter Step 1: Create some awesome fanart Step 2: Attach said awesome fanart to an e-mail with the subject "Birthday Fanart Contest - [Name of Category]" Step 3: Send that e-mail to heroesofcrash@yahoo.com Step 4: Tell all your friends how awesome The Heroes of C.R.A.S.H. is (Optional) Traditional Fanart Category Traditional Fanart means any fanart that you've painted/drawn/sculpted/etc. You could send drawings, sketches, paintings, pixel art, sculptures, or decorated cupcakes. Your medium could be pencil, pen, crayon, charcoal, clay, Play-Doh, Model Magic, jelly beans, metal, gelatin... whatever! What DOESN'T count for this category? Only something that falls under the... Generated Fanart Category Generated Fanart means that you've created a character using a video game (Such as a Mii or a wrestler from a WWE game) or some sort of online character creator (Like Hero Machine or Gaia Online). Essentially if someone else has created the artwork and you just choose to use the pre-made goggles, cape, helmet, tights, etc. and color them appropriately, then it's eligible for this category. This category requires very little in the way of artistic skills, so it's pretty easy to enter. Prizes 1. The winner of the Traditional Fanart category will have their fanart posted on the main page, and they get to choose the next HoC Desktop (As long as they keep it appropriate - no gratuitous sex/violence - and keep it HoC-related). 2. The winner of the Generated Fanart Category will also have their fanart posted on the website, and they will get a special filler drawn based on their submission. 3. Any contestants who follow the rules but don't win the main prizes will each win a surprise character sketch to be sent via e-mail (It could be a digital sketch of one of my characters, but I could just as well draw something based on your avatar, username, or - if you're another webcomic artist whose work I'm familiar with - one of your own characters...! You won't know unless you enter!) 4. All contestants' submissions deemed appropriate are guaranteed to be put on the Fanart Gallery page Submission Guidelines 1. All submissions MUST be received by May 19th! If you don't send it in time, you won't be eligible for prizes. Sorry! 2. Please e-mail all submissions as stated above in the "How to Enter" section. Do I need to repeat myself? 3. All submissions must be Heroes of C.R.A.S.H.-related. DUH! It's a FANART contest! 4. No adult material will be accepted. Keep it G-rated. PG at the most. PG-13 is majorly pushin' it. 5. Last year's winners are NOT eligible to win prizes in the same category in which they previously won (In other words, if you won the Traditional Fanart contest last year, you can only win the Generated Fanart contest this year, or vice-versa). 6. NOTE: Unless you specify otherwise, I will use your username/e-mail name when I credit you as the artist of your work on my Fanart Gallery page. If you prefer to go by any other name, please mention it in the body of your e-mail!
  13. It's hard to believe it, but this is the tenth anniversary of The Heroes of C.R.A.S.H. (Well, technically, it turned ten sometime in January or February, but I'm not sure what day my site actually went online, so I just celebrate it alongside my birthday. But I digress.)! It's been an amazing ten years. While I may not have made any money or gained the notoriety of many of my peers, I can say that it's been fun challenging my brain's creativity lobe to come up with loveable characters, cool stories, and funny jokes on a regular basis. As you can see from my filler, my art and characters have evolved quite a bit in that time. Who knows how they will look ten years from now...? Here's to finding out! I want to thank everyone who's supported me during this time: my family (especially my Mom, whom I got my artistic genes from), my girlfriend Melissa, my friends (Including my computer-fixer Chris and my #1 commenter Gill, who also inspired Cannon and Sugar Rush respectively), all the cool comic artists I've met and chatted with over the years (There's way too many to list - go see my Links page and read their amazing work!), the folks at the 910CMX forums for hosting my own forum (and subsequently helping me to start growing a readership!), many of my teachers (Particularly my patient Junior High and High School art teachers, Mrs. Eichelberger and Pam Grumbach... as well as one IMpatient 5th grade teacher who told me I was too creative. I not only showed her wrong, but I based Battle-Axe Beatrix on her. Heh heh heh...!), and the many cartoonists who inspired me (Once again, too many to list, but I do want to give extra kudos to Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, Tom Warburton, Butch Hartman, Chuck Jones, Charles Schulz, and Walt Disney). And of course, I couldn't have done it without Belt Boy, Cannon, and Titanium Maiden. Thanks for everything, guys! :-) Anyway, if you want to help me celebrate my comic's tenth anniversary AND my birthday, then you should enter my fan art contest or my fan avatar contest by May 19th! You don't have much time left, so do it A-S-A-Now! Oh, and to all my friends who follow me on social media, here's some bonus factoids about today's tribute: - In case it's not obvious, my characters on the left are drawn in a style meant to emulate that which I used when I first started the comic. Back then I drew with a mouse! I was going to use a mouse once again, but Manga Studio lacks the auto-smoothing capabilities of Flash, so I still used a stylus - Retro Belt Boy lacks a "mullet" in the back, TM's got different eyes, shoes, hair, and abs, and Cannon's got stripes on his shoes. And of course, they have thick, sloppy outlines and diamond-shaped muscles. - I wasn't sure how to fit Cannon in with Belt Boy and TM on the sides of the big number 10 without blocking them, and I wasn't sure how excited he'd get over this milestone... so I just had him sitting in front of the lettering and reading comics obnoxiously. - Cannon's having a greater interest in his comic books than the world around him is largely inspired by Jason Grey from the webcomic The Wotch. Cannon's comic cover resemble's Jason's shirt, which was also used as the logo of the 910CMX forums, which hosts my forum, of course!) - The background is gray, just like in the first HoC desktop and the 5th anniversary picture, albeit with a different gradient look to it. - I still want more fan art, folks! Okay, that may not qualify as a "bonus factoid", but it's still true. Send me your entries!
