  3. What Are You Ingesting?

When I become President, this will be the glass ware for all state dinners.
  4. Story: Monday July 18, 2016

Not necessarily. It wouldn't be the first time an older relative decided that her grand godson's friend was a troublemaker, parasite, bad influence, or some other variety of ne'er do well. And don't forget, Elliot has introduced Tedd as "This Thing To My Left". I'm sure Pandora would have found out about that eventually.
  5. What Are You Ingesting?

in the 1970s, all the juice glasses in my house were former processed cheese spread jars. My personal favorite as an eight year old was the mild cheddar with pimentos. I think there was also one with nuts. As for what I'm ingesting now? A&W root beer. The label says "Since 1919" and I think that's how long the can has been sitting in my refrigerator.
  6. The Grammar Thread

"Be" is the most stubbornly irregular verb in English. "He is not" can be contracted as "He's not" or "He isn't". "You are not" can be contracted as "You're not" or "You aren't" But "am not" refuses to be contracted, so the only way to contract "I am not" is "I'm not". From a historical perspective, a lot of verbs that are quite regular now had, in previous centuries, been conjugated in many ways. Generally, the less often a verb is used, the more likely it will eventually be conjugated in a more regular manner. For example, there is some linguistic speculation that it will not be too much longer (just a few centuries) before the past tense of "catch" becomes "catched" instead of "caught". As "be" is among the most frequently used verbs, it resists the regularization of its conjugation with great inertia. If it seems like the process is taking too long, try reading a few passages from the King James Version as it was originally published in 1611. 400 years has made a lot of difference. Just think what will be straightened out in the next half millennium. He hath holpen his servant Israel Luke 1:54 KJV From the Magnificat Canticle Spell check hath not holpen me at all.
  7. Story Wednesday July 20, 2016

Sarah's conversation with Pandora was the same night Elliot and Ashley were at their uneventful mall date. So this is no more than a few hours after that. - we interrupt this chronological commentary for a brane storm - Dangerous Rarity Tedd will notice the magic activity (Pandora vs Disco Wizard in the Chimera Cortex) coming from Grace's room. Tedd will discover a way to notice the presence of immortals on the spirit plane by a human on the mortal plane.

I know that most somnambulism occurs when the subject is not in an active REM Dream state. But could a dream trigger a later sleepwalking episode? A sleepwalking Grace would be in all the usual potential trouble, and she can fly. What happens if she sleep flies and then blacks out completely at 1,000 feet?

I strongly suspect that someone on this forum has been helping Grace learn Danish. This does not bode well. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. Hamlet (1.4), Marcellus to Horatio

  14. The Grammar Thread

We had the advantage that most people could not actually read the Hieroglyphs. So as long as the inscription looked good, what was actually written didn't always matter. Are you familiar with the spurious journalistic advice "Don't let the facts get in the way of the story"? We had a similar regard for spelling. Sorry. That information is "Need to Know" only and you don't need to know about how General Tso stole our chicken rec... ... I said too much.
  15. What Are You Ingesting?

Is this one of those culinary situations where, if you really want to do it right, you need to skip volume measurements altogether and break out the scales?
  16. The Grammar Thread

There is one frequently occurring problem that tends to irritate me far beyond any reasonable degree. "Quite" appearing in the text where the author almost certainly meant to write "Quiet". I know that it is rather unusual to have an English word with three consecutive vowels. I know that spell checkers will not pick up that mistake because "Quite" is also a commonly used word. And I know that I have made that mistake myself quite a few times. Having said all that, I still find it annoying.
  17. Things You Only Noticed On Reread

Perhaps not formally banned. But if the director of mall security was ex-FBI and knew Agent Edward Verres... Howzabowt this? Years ago, Tedd had a habit of inappropriate, but not necessarily criminal, behavior in the mall. Particularly in a part of the mall with several stores specializing in intimate apparel and young women's fashions, but not much else to interest the techno teen crowd. Eventually, young Tedd is again caught behaving in an unbecoming manner. Dad's friend in mall security "arrests" Tedd, leads him to the security office, and reads him the riot act. Edward shows up looking distraught. Edward and the guard leave Tedd alone long enough to develop a healthy level of paranoia. When they come back in, they announce that they have reached an agreement which Tedd WILL abide by. He can go to the drug store next to the food court, because that's where he buys his oral hygiene supplies (remember, they accept coupons). But he may not go farther down that corridor. And he must use the exterior doors to enter and leave the Seers Robot at the end of that corridor. Also, security WILL be watching Tedd anytime he is anywhere in or near the mall. Of course none of this is legally enforceable. But if this was about the same time he started working on the Uryuom tech, he might have been young and naïve enough to fall for it. By his junior year of high school, he might have said "I'm banned from that end of the mall" so many times, he doesn't even think of statement's plausibility.
  18. Greg's New Girlfriend

There is no such thing as a "Joke Ship". You launched her. She will sail. I know of which I speak. Back when I was active in the Kim Possible FanFic community, I posted a story about Rufus and Shego. I thought it was an absurd joke. Rugo will not die.

IF magical insiders are not aware of Adrian's relationship to Pandora, then I don't think he is withholding that information because of how they would treat her. It would seem more likely that he might fear how the magic community would treat him if his parentage became general knowledge. I say IF because I honestly don't believe that he is hiding that fact. At least not from everyone. And if I may. There is a thread specifically for Discussions regarding Pacing, Scheduling and Fanservice at the top of the General Discussion forum.
  20. What's in the Lost and Found?

  21. Story: Monday July 18, 2016

I would guess Adrian never saw the darkest aspects of Pandora until he was well into adulthood. Unless, of course, she used that form and attitude as a tool for his training. But he is aware of just how dangerous she is now, and this was probably not a recent discovery on his part. So Adrian is aware that his mother is a potential threat to just about everyone. What can he do about it today? What could he have done about it in the distant past? What could he have done about it in the recent past? What will he be able to do about it in the foreseeable future? I'm thinking that in the earliest days, Adrian would have be unable to do anything significant to stop or control his mother. In later years, I'm guessing that "can they stop my mother" was a thought when he trained various individuals and teams. Perhaps he thought Noriko and Edward might have been pat of a team that actually could have faced Pandora. The thought may have occurred to him while considering training Noah and Grace, only to be quickly extinguished by the memory of Noriko and Edward.

Is it possible that game mechanics may not be the best way to tell tales of character growth and development?
  25. Story: Thursday, July 14, 2016

Essentially, Voltaire framed Abner. I could not say that Pandora would actually care about the life of Abner. And if she arranged for his death before she discovered that lil' Abner was just another victim of the Cheshire Fried Colonel, Pandora would not feel particularly guilty. Having said that. If she discovers that Abner was deliberately put in her path by Voltaire, Pandora just might guide and empower Abner to become a useful tool in her latest grudge match. (And how much empowering does an ordinary mortal need to become a useful tool in a battle against an immortal?) On a side note (C# below middle C), before posting this comment, I referred to Pandora as Eris twice. I really feel she has more in common with the party crasher who started the Trojan War than the human who was told "Don't do this" and then was left alone. Does anyone else feel that way?
