NP Comic for Thursday, Nov 9, 2023 The change in magic with less power but greater flexibility appears to have greater ramifications than they were aware of. They can combine spells. Nanase doesn't quite get to tell us what her new spell was. The limitations of AI shown in a harsh light. Fox is now programmed for a task, and has no sense about when it is appropriate. (Imagine if she had the strength, and did not understand not to fold the human with the clothes. Sky Net, here we come.) Also, Kevin is aware of his obsolescence, but is oddly capable of meta reasoning about it. I wonder if he can modify his curriculum to take changes into account or if it is hard coded. He is apparently able to understand that it has changed.

NP Comic for Thursday, Nov 2, 2023 Having magic gave mousey, short Rhoda confidence (well, magic, and a girlfriend). Magic has so far made Ashley more neurotic. Maybe when she gets some power, that will change.

https://www.egscomics.com/egsnp/fox-021 Kevin, why must you be a reliable and interesting source of magical knowledge? I was almost ready to simply ignore you whenever you appeared on panel. . . . . . I probably shouldn't be surprised that there is more than one way to achieve similar magical results. I suppose that the next step is to have Nanase make a "Model Fox" in a manner similar to Kevin's construction, then blend those techniques with her summon spell. And the interplay between Ashley and Kevin makes me think of Kevin as a tutor for a Middle School History class, but he only has the University text book available. Every time he lets a controversial tidbit slip, like ritual summons, the British Raj or Japanese internment, it distracts Ashley from the basic rote facts she's supposed to be learning, like the names of all the American states, the names of all the British monarchs or "is this your card?"

NP Comic for Thursday, Oct 19, 2023 Kevin once again displays what for a human would be hubris, but for a stick is at least hubris++. "I am superior to you in every way. Tell me what is on that flat surface." "Oh, you can't see it, can you? Well, they are making rude drawings of you showing how inept you are." I think that now that he is practically a major character, Kevin needs a proper name. It should probably be Kevin Arthur, since Arthur Arthur created him and treats him as a son. I like Kevin the Kindling for its alliteration. Bonus points for expressing appropriate hostility. Does EGS meet the criteria to qualify as a stick person comic? I think it is only marginally one. I bet he's riot at parties. "The party was going great, then Tedd brought out Kevin." I suppose you could play pranks on him, though. Paint him while he's asleep. "Hey, Kevin. Guess what color you are." I think I would glue two craft eyes on him. Make him look even sillier. Then paint a top hat and give it a cardboard brim. "That's more Kevin comments than you can shake a stick at." "No, it's not." <grab> <shake> Kevin: "Hey, put me down." "OK. You are a crotchety buffoon who is full of himself. This aspect of your personality seems superfluous to your training purpose, and I am left wondering why you are like that. Are you a reflection of Arthur's own personality? If so, you are all the rough parts, aggregated; he is more understanding than you are. It is a shame you cannot experience the life your students lead, it would mellow and mature you. In a meta sense, you do not seem to add to the comic. My impression is that Tedd is a better trainer than you are. Your so called 'training' has been mostly put-downs as far as we've seen. What do you even bring to the table?" "Table? What table?" "Exactly" I think Melvin's cursed genie cat does a better job.

NP Comic for Tuesday, Sep 26, 2023 Nanase is least cool when she's looking for approval as cool. My impression is that prior to the magic change, making out with a caster and her double would have been somewhat like a twin fantasy, but knowing it was a double might sour the deal. After the change, both the caster and the double would seem mentally challenged; this does not sound appealing. Ashley is imagining something like the first scenario in her head canon. So, did Nanase use Fox in sessions with Ellen or not? Would it enhance the situation from either point of view? Nanase might think, "Am I not enough for you on my own?" Ellen might think it is a way of Nanase distancing herself. Or it could have just happened off scene, that seems to be the EGS default. It is noteworthy that Ashley imagined Elliot as male. I think every time they've made out in the comic, they've both been female.

NP Comic for Tuesday, Sep 19, 2023 Kevin is loosing whatever passes for his mind. Delusions of grandeur clearly labelled. Nice touch. If you cut up Kevin with a table saw, would you have four mini-Kevins, or would they no longer work? Hmm, I think we need to apply the scientific method.

Comic for Monday, Sep 11, 2023 Kevin is giving Tedd a lesson from Dan's real life, I guess?

Sketchbook Comic for Monday, Sep 11, 2023 The faces don't normally seem dissimilar, but there must be subtle cues, because there all look like Elliot transformed.

Comic for Thursday, Sep 7, 2023 Thus Sprach Kevin (queue music). I see him as more like the monolith than like Zoroaster, though. Except the monolith kept it's mouth shut. So to speak.

Sketchbook Comic for Monday, Sep 4, 2023 Grace is cute as a goth. I suppose the large breasts are because cows have big udders, but breasts are not shaped like udders nor placed like udders. This probably ties into why I'm not a fan of furries in general. At least she's not a lizard with breasts or a naga. The horns are more problematic. They look quite dangerous - to Ashley. They would be connected to the skull, but not adequately braced, and seem like they would be prone to fracture her skull if she stumbled against something or took a blow to the head.

Comic for Monday, Sep 4, 2023 "Oh, he's back." - Snarky, dismissive, lack of contextual framework - 'Tedd lives here, I'm in his basement' "'Thanks for asking.' See? I was helpful." - Emotionally needy, missing the point, lacking confidence. Basically, an A.I. that is questioning its own existence (Sarah spots that Kevin is misconstruing the events. My only quibble is she is assuming he is capable of learning. I'd say TBD, prove it Kevin, show some actual progress, even if in a wrong direction.) "Speaking of lessons . . . Boyfriend! Please use magic so Ashley can practice observing a person casting spells." - Lacking the rudiments of polity. Ask Elliot his name, dipstick. "It's unlikely you'll be able to copy any yet, but it's possible, so pay super extra close attention!" - Pointless discouraging remark, badly structured request for Ashley to watch Elliot (already implied in previous statement). Note that all three people present in the last panel have shading indicating embarrassment, yet they have nothing to be embarrassed about. They are embarrassed for Kevin, for how inept he is. Kevin is his own self-parody. His flaws make little sense. In some cases he has too much knowledge for what he is; where did he acquire that knowledge when he has limited exposure and is made with a specific purpose in mind. His ability to misuse the word 'super' in a way that still makes sense defies credulity. Arthur tasked Kevin with training Ashley. Arthur actually tasked Ashley with raising his created incorrigible stick kid. (Kevin gave Ashley an order, so that would be an order of the stick, right?) Tedd, please refrain from unnecessary interaction with the stick. He's a defective A.I., and each conversation is new opportunity for error. God help them if they need to come up with a joint lesson plan. More importantly, why are Tedd's eyes glowing in the first panel?

Comic for Wednesday, Aug 30, 2023 It is logical that Kevin, being entirely non-biological, and going dormant when he isn't training someone thinks that is the only reason to exist. From the point of view of software design, he is lacking in user friendly interface features. Kevin is too early a version of what he is, at best the beta version. It is not good that Tedd is taking Kevin's criticism to heart. It show too much vulnerability for the position he's been thrust into. Kevin's P.O.V. is unhealthy, and Sarah is correct. He probably needs more context, if he's able to absorb it. I'd start with "Magic is a tool, a means to other goals, not an all consuming purpose in itself. That is not true for you because you were created with the purpose of training others in magic, but Kevin, you are also a tool, a means to an end." Maybe this arc will deal with Tedd's tendency to fixate at the expense of his other needs.

Comic for Monday, Aug 28, 2023 'Enormous'? I would have said 'Obnoxious'. I see him as the Scrappy of the comic. And, like Scrappy, he doesn't serve a purpose. It would have made more sense if Ashley had found an enchanted training spell book or a magic training iPad. He defies any form of logic. How does he see and hear? How does he think? How does he speak? Why, in the context of his single purpose, does he have emotions? What do those emotions reflect? He does not seem to have a personal ethos that matches Arthur. So where do the differences come from? My conclusion is that he is strictly comedy relief. When does he get 'face' time in the comic? When he says something dumb. So, caveat, when they do the movie version of EGS, Kevin will be the villain pulling the strings behind the evil. "Hey, Kevin, can you help us start a fire?" "Certainly. I know several trivial cantrips for creating fire." "Actually, if you'd just stick one of your ends in this pencil sharpener, we just need some tinder." Years later, Kevin is a magic training toothpick. "Practice good oral hygiene, kids. Clean your teeth."

https://www.egscomics.com/comic/layers-040 Regarding the last part of the commentary, Ashley's situation actually reminds me of the average Doctor Who companion (at least during the classic series; I'm not very familiar with the modern series).

Sketchbook Comic for Friday, Apr 7, 2023 So, arms linked; Susan is not avoiding body contact. This could be rabbit forming. I did not recognize Ashley, thought it was Elliot in one of his girly forms. The title spelled it out.

Sketchbook Comic for Friday, February 17, 2023
Darth Fluffy posted a topic in EGS Sketchbook Discussion
Sketchbook Comic for Friday, February 17, 2023 Elliot is transforming into a more or less duplicate of Ashley, but the transition appears to still be in process. His hair is defying gravity. (Gravity does not appreciate the sentiment.) Also, details are off, which could be because he is still transforming. His face shape is face shape is rounder, his boobs are bigger, and his hips are wider; overall he looks a bit bigger. The thing at his knee level looks like a skirt or pants dropping, which seems odd; in the comics so far, they typically resize, and his hips look like they'd still hold up a skirt or pants. Part of the transition? Ashley likes how she looks. -
Dan accidentally released this Milestone for patrons earlier than usual; it can be found at: https://www.patreon.com/posts/whoops-ashley-76836142 Tomorrow night it should be available on the main site; I'm guessing the URL will be https://www.egscomics.com/sketchbook/2023-001 I don't have too much to say about this one other than that the art's pretty but the contents don't do much for me.
