The Old Hack got a reaction from CritterKeeper in Things That Are Just Annoying
Thank you. Both for the kind compliment and for being considerate of my all too limited reserve of patience and of my well-being as a whole.

(Please note that there is no Politics thread; this post is specifically about how the debates are being run, please refrain from *any* specifics about individuals, and only address the format of the debate itself in any replies to this post. ;-)
Next time there's a debate, they really need to give the moderator a kill switch for each candidate's microphone. Any time a candidate starts dodging a question or talking off-topic the moderator can hit their kill switch and instruct them to contain their remarks to the topic at hand. Any time a candidate interrupts their opponent and tries to talk over them, their mic will be turned off and their opponent will get at minimum of twice the time they were interrupted added to their time to speak unopposed before their offender's microphone is turned back on.
I'd really like to see how many times being cut off it would take before people started to respect the rules of the debate and stop being rude.

They need someone like Hack moderating the debates, I say someone like Hack and not Hack himself because I like Hack and wouldn't want him suffering through that.

How can he show himself to be responsible with priceless and irreplacable repositories of knowledge if he no longer possesses any with which to demonstrate responsibility? Is this a Catch-22?

The Old Hack reacted to CritterKeeper in The Best EGS Faces
Lo, these many years ago, I did something similar with tracing paper and copies of Elfquest. Wendy Pini is awesome with faces, both expressions and making each character's face distinct in shape. I suspect I learned more from tracing them than I would from digitally clipping images, but I didn't become a draw-er myself so maybe I didn't learn enough. ;-)

Ellen needs a way to contact her second life counterpart. Too bad Nioi didn't leave contact info.
Opening an internet connection to an alien earth would be like discovering an Alexandrian library from a previously unknown culture.

Now that I think about it, that probably includes a lot of stuff the DGB is in charge of covering up. Aliens are out in the open there, so she likely knows a lot of the same kind of trivia about the major nearby alien worlds as we'd know about the major foreign countries.
One other thing that occurred to me back in Family Tree when she caught the Charlie's Angels reference and seemed excited about watching it with Nanase was how often that must *not* happen for her. She's almost more out of touch with geek culture than Grace ever was - the world she by her own admission recalls more clearly diverges from ours with the open presence of aliens centuries in the past - there's no way anything remotely like the science fiction at the root of that is at all similar. For that matter it's before most of the touchstones of our wider culture exist - it predates the actual Classical period of classical music for example, and is pushing on predating the invention of the *novel* as a literary form. She must come out with allusions and famous quotes all the time that nobody understands, from great cultural works she can't even share because they don't exist here.

A festival with its entire foundation based on drinking beer? You couldn't keep it isolated to a single nationality if you tried.

No no, the whole bit about Rhoda's spell and frolicking in cupcake frosting was the lojinks, now we're starting into the midjinks.

There is a significant chance of Jinks for the EGSNP viewing area. But initial reports of Jinks have yet to be verified by the National Jinks Center.
So we remain under a Jinks Watch. Only the National Jinks Center on Jinks Island, Antarctica can issue an Official Hijinks Warning.

Alert! Jinks have been spotted. Current level of jinkness is upper low to middle, with hijinks expected soon.

When Voltaire brought it up, he said something like, "Well, Elliot is still alive, so plan B is still on the table." To me, the "so" implies that plan B, aka plan CM, requires Elliot to be alive.
Oooh....that is an *evil* thought! (This is the point where an old writing group of mine would have chimed in with a collective, "Yay, evil!" because we'd found that the best ideas were almost always evil ideas....)
In Elliot's case, the danger is definitely that he perhaps can't live with them.

Sadly, most people get more formal training for their paid jobs than they do for (what should be) their most important job.
Edward Veres has done some things wrong in the process of raising Tedd. But I still would not call him a bad parent

A massive burst of gamma rays is still not good for your health. Marvel notwithstanding, it doesn't normally turn you into a superhero.

At least they would be over very, very quickly. So would the problems of most everybody on the continental land mass you happened to be on at the time.

I dunno, I think the aftereffects on weather patterns with all that dust being hurled up, not to mention the massive burst of radioactivity, would be pretty fierce. Admittedly that would take somewhat longer.

You know, Voltaire is quite literally being a bully here, he's targeted Elliot for reasons unknown but might due to his ego, manipulated others into doing harm to Elliot, and is now attempting verbal abuse to provoke him into acting, Elliot's dealt with bullies picking on others for years and that's always been his go to response for dealing with them.
I guess there's no loophole that allows verbal abuse to be considered an attack and therefore Elliot would have justification to fight Voltaire or even cause the other immortals to take notice and force Voltaire to reset.

I am so sorry. Please give my heartfelt sympathies to Mrs. Prof. The thing about blows like this one is: even if you see it coming, the blow of a hammer still strikes like a hammer.
Take good care of yourself and her, and my thoughts go out to you.

Nah, it's not that bad. While a 60 kg (global average) person would wipe out Texas, I doubt Canada would feel a thing. An 80.7 kg person (average North American) could pretty much remove Spain and Portugal from the maps, but I'm confident that Romania would probably be fine. Lousy tourists.
