mlooney is right, CritterKeeper. Both Loudmouth and Baker have tipped left ears. This is my right ear, though, and it'd be a hole in the upper-middle of my ear. I don't think that would have a meaning unless I put one of Justin's earrings in it, and no, I'm not calling out the gay signal (to use The Dan's words). Mrs. Prof can attest.

Given that he told me, I suspect he knows.

I've been in the mood for fun books lately, stuff that makes me laugh and generally has a happy ending. Most recently, that was Donna Andrew's Meg Langslow mysteries. Meg is a blacksmith and a very organized person with a family that gets odder (or just reveals more oddness) with every book. Each book has a different setting or hobby. First one, Murder With Peacocks, she's Maid of Honor at three weddings in one summer. A fan-run sci-fi con, a computer gaming company, a giant yard sale, a Revolutionary War reenactment, X-treme Croquet (which is a real thing), and the tourist-dependent town's efforts at Christmas and Halloween have been favorites. Every book is good for several laughs, and you can really get to know and root for the ongoing characters. I just finished re-reading the whole series, and she seems to come out with a couple of new ones per year so I'm expecting another Christmas by the end of the year. She also wrote a mystery series as part of a challenge, at the 1996 Malice Domestic convention, to create a protagonist no one had ever used in a mystery before. She did one with an artificial intelligence program. Picture if Google, instead of having a bare-bones search engine, had created "librarian" programs who could help you with whatever research you were doing, each with a different personality and the ability to improve their own programming to be more useful (including improving their interactions with customers). That's Turing Hopper, named for the father of AI and for Admiral Grace Hopper, mother of computing. I haven't read that series in quite a while, but the books were on the shelf next to Meg's series so I checked them out, and am looking forward to seeing how well it's holding up given how much progress has happened since they were published.

I'll toss in a blatant family self-promo here, although the book as a whole is much more than that. It's called Lone Star Lawmen: The Second Century of the Texas Rangers. I recommend it because a part of it talks about a distant grandfather of mine, Louis G. Phares, who helped form the Texas Department of Public Safety from the Highway Department. It's not a happy story, since there's a lot of political messing with the process he used, and he wasn't exactly the friendliest person on earth, but hey - there's a good segment in the book about him. BTW, he was responsible for coordinating the capture of Bonnie and Clyde. Texas Ranger Frank Hamer may have carried out the raid, but it was with the organizational help of Chief Louis G. Phares.

Darn you! And I've held that title all but unchallenged in a streak every year since 2009, except for 2014 of course. But just you wait! I'LL BE BACK!

I am officially a catastrophe for 2017. Several of my prescriptions have had no copay within the past few days. I called Blue Cross's customer service line to find out what's going on. They told me that I'd met my catastrophic limit with a prescription that had been called in on October 3rd (post-hospital stay). Now I've got to figure out the best way to take advantage of this for the rest of the year.

Proposal: Federal rules should form a minimum standard. Individual states should have some freedom to make changes of their own Access to this system is blocked to anyone who has committed a violent felony for 10 years per violation, and they stack. Creation of an independent Federal Firearms licensing Authority, to be supported by licensing fees and government if necessary. It is a nonprofit corporation run in the public interest, but not under the command and control of the Executive Branch. Its exclusive function is to grant federal gun-related licenses and run federal background checks. All other government agencies are to cooperate with this agency are not allowed to duplicate its work and must defer to its authority keeps an encrypted database of background checks, current licenses and other information as needed to administer laws. Police and government must have a valid warrant or congressional subpoena to look at information and must have a separate one for each individual. Disclosing database information without a warrant is a felony, , fines, jail time, blah, blah, blah Government may not surveil this agency, interfere with its normal operation or compile lists that in any way duplicate this agency's. Felony, fines, jail time, blah, blah, blah for anybody involved. Individuals may request activity sheets which detail if government has been asking about them. Government may have specific queries temporarily sealed by court order. Rules for semi-automatic and slower-firing weapons at or under 10Kg unloaded weight. (Casual sport and self defense) May be purchased with a certificate of having passed a basic gun safety class within the previous two years, plus a background check, plus a minimum waiting period, no exceptions. The internet is everywhere people. There's no excuse. Weapons may not be modified in any way such that a trigger pull fires more than one round. Magazines for such weapons may not be sold with a higher capacity than 10 rounds. Ammunition may not be sold that has increased body armor penetration. Rules for weapons under 10KG in weight and accessories not covered above (Enthusiast) Illegal without a Restricted Weapons license. Can't use someone else's license, other commonsense stuff, violators get Felony, fines, jail time, blah, blah, blah Having a Restricted weapons license enables the purchase of Restricted weapons and accessories with valid confirmation of the license. No "yes" means no. Restricted items include but are not limited to Automatic weapons 10Kg or under Magazines with a capacity above 10 rounds round types not listed above. modifications to semiautomatic weapons 10KG or under to make them fire faster Purchaser is responsible for any damage or loss of life related to items purchased using the license. Private sale of Restricted stuff are identical to those of a new sale. The parties must use a 3rd party broker to run background checks, hold weapons for cooling off periods etc. Once the selling party releases control of the Restricted stuff, they are no longer responsible. Must renew license each year or certify that all Restricted items have been sold or destroyed. Rules for weapons over 10Kg unloaded weight (military grade) You need a damn good reason to want a working one of these. Exceptions include museums and very SERIOUS private collectors. Not going to go into detail here because it's really outside the scope of the current discussion. Just note there are some special cases I'm not covering. National Concealed Carry License Only covers carrying Self Defense grade weapons. Wearer is licensed with one weapon. Additional weapons are licensed individually Valid within the borders of the US, supersedes state carry laws. Issued after owner demonstrates ability to shoot well, good knowledge of state and federal laws that have jurisdiction within 50 miles of their residence, knowledge of safety and maintenance. State law may restrict concealed carry on transports such as (but not limited to) planes, busses and trains. A concealed carry does not mean the licensee can ignore reasonable "gun-free zone" rules or laws. Moratorium For the next 10 years, no law may be introduced, regulation changed or introduced or executive order enforced that impacts the 2nd Amendment or laws pertaining to it without a 60% consenting vote from both houses of Congress, or 50% congressional vote plus president's signature After 10 years the threshold drops to 55%, or 50% congressional vote plus president's signature. The idea is to give something to get something. Restrictions tighten for self defense uses but open up for enthusiasts. Gun owners concerned about being on lists know that at the very least, the lists aren't in easy reach of the government.

    Story Friday October 13 2017

In regards to marking Diane, I just don't think Pandora would do so in secret. Pandora wanted to talk to Adrian about it before she told anyone else, I would think she'd want to wait unto after she did that before she goes and introduces herself to Diane and Susan and that would be the best opportunity to offer to mark Diane. Pandora is trying to focus on not messing things up even further so marking relatives without their consent wouldn't be on her to do list. In regards to Adrian's relation to Susan and Diane, it just doesn't make sense for Adrian to not remember Susan if she was his daughter, and not question if Diane was his as well. You state that it could be possible he didn't notice any resemblance between him and Diane because Nanase didn't see any resemblance between Diane and Susan until it was pointed out, but again, if Adrian was Mr Pompoms then he should remember living with Susan for several years, I would think that Adrian would not forget that so easily. Also I just can't see Adrian living such a double life being Mr. Raven the teacher at MSHS and Mr. Pompoms the cheating cheater who cheats. I would also think that Pandora would have known about this as well and probably not approved. It would make a lot more sense if Adrian had a relationship with a woman several decades ago, got her pregnant but was convinced that it couldn't have been his, and that child grew up to be Susan and Diane's father. In regards to Dan's comment about it back then, he could still have been dropping hints, but not be entirely accurate about it, like the twist that Susan was related to Adrian would be true, but saying that Adrian's her father wouldn't necessarily be accurate.
