http://egscomics.com/egsnp/nanasecraft-28 Called it! Or at least, Sarah thought of the same idea I had (though even just within this comic she took longer to figure it out than I did). It remains to be seen if we're right. (Of course, Dan giving out cookies would suggest we are.) Actually, if this is all there is to it, I'm a little disappointed - that was a very simple and easy puzzle.
  2. Story, Wednesday Dec 19, 2018

http://egscomics.com/comic/tsos-17 [space for spoilers] For once, I noticed right away when Tedd changed sex! That's one victory over change-blindness! Out of curiosity, how many of you noticed right away? Anybody not notice until they got to the commentary (or until I said something)? (I'd make it a poll, but I suspect I wouldn't be able to include any spoiler precautions for one.)
  3. Story, Monday Dec 17, 2018

My thought was maybe at some point she telekinetically "jostled" something, but either her sense wasn't developed enough to tell it had moved, or she didn't have confidence in her sense yet. If she didn't see it move or otherwise sense it with any of her senses besides her telekinetic sense, she might either never have noticed, or noticed but assumed it was just her imagination.
  4. This Day In History

We can't just leave evidence lying around that the "savages" had (or worse have) their own civilizations, now can we?
  5. Story, Monday Dec 17, 2018

She disarmed that mugger which mean she had to grab and move the knife with her telekinesis and a knife is certainly bigger than dice. But I think that was the only time and she's stated that it's easier to just make herself fly. She was also in half squirrel form at the time of the mugging which again could mean that her abilities are limited to the form she's in. Her reaction when she stopped the goo suggests to me that as of that point she had no idea she could move (or stop) objects. However it is true that she had moved at least one object before, the mugger's knife - she just was so out of it she couldn't remember it later. This raises the possibility that she might have moved other things in the past without realizing she'd done anything (possibly other incidents like the mugger, or possibly moving something she wasn't looking at just a little bit).

Well, "shouldn't of" and "shouldn't've" sound almost exactly the same, so it's not really that much of a compromise. EDIT: He's edited it again. Now Tedd says he was yelled at rather than they had a fight.
  7. Story, Monday Dec 17, 2018

Figured since it's relevant to this comic, I'd post the tweets here rather than the "Word of Dan" thread.

Considering X-Men/Marvel and EGS are entirely different fictional multiverses / continuities, you can't really use power-scaling in one series to judge power-scaling in the other. And even if you could, I don't think the individual powers of mutants with similar power-sets always develop in the same order (and EGS magic users don't get spells in the same order on the rare occasion they have the same spells at all, though Uryuom powers might be different), so just because Jean Gray was really powerful before she developed a specific ability does not necessarily mean anyone else with that ability is equally powerful. (Of course Grace is powerful, just apparently not when it comes to telekinesis.) I don't know how the writers of X-Men conceptualized telekinesis, but it seems like Dan is picturing it like a hand (with a well developed sense of touch) grasping the object. That being the case, she probably could telekinetically "touch" an object long before she realized she could manipulate and move them. (I wouldn't be surprised if she's had this sense all her life, but she only realized she could move objects during the second Goo fight...)

Re: the talk about Adrian fighting Damien. It's possible (I think likely) that the same rules that prevent him from joining the military would also have prevented him from hunting Damien down. The only reason he was able to fight Abraham, and I assume the only reason he was able to fight the aberrations at the mall, is that he was defending people who were in immediate danger.

When I look at it, I find the blue of her skirt calming, and over-all the color scheme feels pleasant and well-balanced. The only problem is, this is supposed to be a moment in time in a story, not a piece of art that exists only to look good (or an advertisement or piece of home decor, other scenarios where having just the right colors is important); the "perfect balance" actually makes it feel a bit too artificial to me. ...And even beyond that consideration, I find the pink in the first version exciting. It screams "look at me!" while the third one is a far more low key color scheme. (Also I just like pink.)

It's not a milestone/pinup or a sketchbook (yet) so I guess I'll mention this here: Bonus color versions on Patreon. Personally, I like the first one best.

http://egscomics.com/egsnp/nanasecraft-26 While Nanase might not need Sarah's help to figure out the goal of the puzzle, if the weights are all of varying weights Nanase still might need her help to figure out how to get the scales even. Knowing Dan, though, I expect there to be a twist. My guess: adjusting the scale adjusts the height (and possibly intelligence or other attributes) of both of them in opposite ways, and the goal is actually to even out the attributes in question between Sarah and Nanase.

    Oops.
  14. NP Wednesday Dec 12, 2018

Come to think of it, I can think of one instance where I found characters being made less intelligent funny: that episode of ReBoot where Enzo accidentally turned Mainframe 8-bit. To this day, when someone is trying to help and making things worse, I often think of everyone's "help" in that episodes Game... ("We are helping to make you go faster!") Now I need to decide whether to feel guilty about finding that funny, or find a justification for why it's okay to laugh at it. Hmm, that would work for a justification...
  15. Story Friday, December 14, 2018

I may be forgetting something, but I think she can only fly in her Omega form. At the moment I looks like she isn't even transforming to her anthro squirrel form let alone Omega, just letting her antennae loose. I'm assuming she's going to just levitate the dice. As for what happens next, the most obvious thing would be for someone to catch her at it. However, that seems a bit too obvious; Dan likes to subvert the obvious expectations, so I'm guessing it's something else. That's what I consider the most likely. I don't know about why she insisted on doing it herself, but her bringing out her antennae may be a case of her being careless (consciously or otherwise) in order to increase the chances of being accidentally discovered by Sam. (Of course this would work better if she had reason to expect Sam to be around.) I've never stepped on a Lego, but I have stepped on smooth pebbles that were higher than everything around them. Just the fact that it is small and raised up enough from the ground/floor to cause most of your weight to rest on it can cause it to really hurt. Also, it doesn't matter what the object is made of if it's hard and too solid for your weight to crush/squish. I thought nobody expected them.
  16. http://egscomics.com/sketchbook/2018-045 Another colorized NP, because Dan was running late. It's kind of funny, the original purpose of this strip was partially to buy Dan some time while he worked out the next puzzle/trap in the crypt; now it's being used to buy some time again.

Definitely. Once upon a time, it was called the "Filler" section, after all.
  18. NP Wednesday Dec 12, 2018

I considered starting the thread to say that I was speechless, but I decided to go to bed instead. Now that I've had time to think about it, I can say that I'm not happy with it, though I can put up with it for a little while. Generally speaking, I dislike mental transformations, as I feel that it changes who the character is. However how big a change it is and how long it lasts affect how much I dislike it; Elliot's secret identity forms and spells with similar effects don't bother me at all, as it's just the mental equivalent of a costume - the characters remain themselves underneath, and can "take it off" whenever they want. Mental changes which reduces a character's intelligence on the other hand, I find quite creepy, even if it is temporary (and if it's not temporary it's not just creepy, it's tragic). Those factors do take a lot of the sting out of it. However, I still don't find it cute or fun, and it's actually a turn off for me. (That said, I could see how someone might find a character like this funny - I actually enjoy cloudcuckoolander characters, and there is some overlap between that character type and the bimbo type.)
  19. http://egscomics.com/sketchbook/2018-044 I kinda wish Dan had gone with his initial impulse and made the guys shirt-less -- or at least Justin. I also think Ashley's over-dressed. In my opinion, the ideal "outfit" for tiny insect-winged Fairies is naked, and the next-best option is a leaf-tunic with bare feet. (I also like the default bodysuit of the Fairy Doll spell, but that's a very unconventional fairy outfit, and since she doesn't have a tail Ashley does not appear to be using the fairy doll spell.)
  20. Sketchbook Tuesday Dec 11, 2018

Yeah, I would have been surprised if Dan had drawn her naked, and even more surprised if he'd then posted it on the main site. There definitely would have had to have been something blocking our view of certain body parts. And her outfit isn't "bad" (in fact I think it looks pretty good), it's just close enough to the typical fairy outfit that it make me want to see my idealized version of the typical fairy outfit. (Also, the default fairy doll gets a pass from me because I like body-covering but form-fitting outfits like catsuits and the like.) In the commentary, Dan suggests that this is part of a story Ashley wrote. In that scenario, presumably Ashley-the-fairy is Ashley's self-insert character. Of course that still leaves the question open: in the context of the internal story, was Fairy Ashley always a fairy? If not many of the possibilities you mentioned come back into play.

  22. This Day In History

That might be difficult, considering that the surface of Venus is hot enough to melt metal, and the gas giants don't have surfaces to speak of, and their gravity would be enough to flatten a person. It's easier to kill something you can see.
  23. Story Friday December 07, 2018

Aside from this allowing for the fakeout of Grace planning to "talk" (or smile) at Sam only to have him not show up, I'm pretty sure it's probably Dan's intention that Salty Crackers hosts card tournaments regularly (in fact I get the impression they have one every Friday). Luke has the power to sense magical auras; there's no indication he has any other magical sight powers. And I doubt what gender one is or whether one is trans has an effect on one's magical aura.
  24. This Day In History

I'm sure there would be some overlap there, but yeah probably not enough to count on an average freshman knowing about records. (Of course, as I believe I mentioned the last time this came up, you don't need to know what a common phrase references to know what it means in context. I suspect the phrase "broken record" is still popular enough that even those who don't know what a record is are familiar with it. In a similar vein, many people who were born in the last ten to twenty years may not have encountered a VHS tape or audio cassette, and have no idea that the term "rewind" once referred to actual winding, but still use the term...)
  25. Sketchbook Thursday Nov 29, 2018

Before I read the article hkmaly linked/quoted, I thought maybe they were referring to the color of tarnished bronze. It is kind of bluish, and if the term encompassed more than the exact color of tarnished bronze I could see it standing in for the term "blue".
