  1. This Day In History

In the 1970s a US President who was an All American Center and Defensive End for the National Champion Michigan Wolverines and a US Navy Officer in the Battle of the Philippine Sea had to be whisked away by Secret Service agents to escape a woman called "Squeaky".

Actually, we had a GREAT waterpark. What you now call the Second and Third Cataracts of The Nile were specifically designed to be white water rafting facilities. We probably would have enjoyed far more repeat customers if we also included helmets, life vests, and other safety gear with the ticket. As for the hippo rides? We tried. We REALLY tried! But the hippos simply refused to wait in long lines.

  4. Story, Wednesday January 30, 2019

We know that Nanase's mother knows far more about magic, Tedd, Adrian Raven, and what Edward Vere's department at the FBI actually does than she has ever admitted to Nanase. She could have minimized contact between Edward and Nanase, instead she let Nanase become Tedd's tutor. She could have kept Nanase out of contact with Adrian just by sending her to the school on the other side of town, instead she let Nanase into his class where Adrian would take an interest in Nanase, just like he did with her and Noriko. We don't know why Nanase's mother does not appear to be an active practitioner of magic. But for what ever reason, she is encouraging (or at least allowing) Nanase to pursue those fields without actually acknowledging the effort. My guess for a long time has been that Mrs Kitsune is attempting to leave her daughter a way out of magic into a "normal" life. And her understanding of "Normal" does not include lesbian relationships. So how much of Mrs Kitsune's negative reaction to homosexuality is her genuine belief, and how much is a show to allow her daughter to be "Normal"? ? Having said all that, it seems that Nanase has long passed the point where exaggerated morality plays would be the most effective teaching tool.
  5. OT14 as an actual tetrakaidecagon

It exists in time... But seriously, a tetrakaidekahedron (or tetradekahedron), is a solid with fourteen faces. Wouldn't the ideal representation be an object of fourteen vertices with edges and faces representing the relationship between said vertices? Of course, if it was a convex structure, there cold be connections between vertices that are not apparent from the exterior.

Quite true. The man was no idiot. But his ability to make statements that could so easily be misconstrued out of context made George XLI look like a genius by comparison and made Johnny Carson's final years on The Tonight Show so much easier to write.
  8. OT14 as an actual tetrakaidecagon

It reminds me of some designs for clockwork perpetual motion machines.

Croquet mallets are all wood. Golf clubs are a mix of wood and iron. On the other hand, in Croquet there are times you can knock your opponent's ball off the playing field. In Golf, you need to wait for your opponent to drive his own ball into the rough. My opponents don't need to wait very long for that...

  12. Story Monday January 28, 2019

Don't bother hiding your face, Grace. I graduated High School in 1985, and the most recent time I was embarrassed by something I did in High School was 03:30 AM today. It does not get easier.
  13. This Day In History

Being President of the United States is in many ways like being married to the country. Or being married to everyone in the country...

That sounds like Disney's mouse ears logo.
  15. This Day In History

26 January 1500 – Vicente Yáñez Pinzón becomes the first European to set foot on Brazil. Just in time for Carnival. 1564 – The Council of Trent establishes an official distinction between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. It can be very difficult to fight a war if you can't tell who is "US" and who is "THEM". Difficult, but not impossible. 1697 – Isaac Newton receives Jean Bernoulli's 6 month time-limit problem. The problem involved falling bodies on curved lines and had stumped other mathematicians for about two years. Newton begins working on the problem at 4:00 PM and has it solved before going to bed at 4:00 AM. 1700 – The 8.7–9.2 Mw Cascadia earthquake takes place off the west coast of North America. Geological evidence as well as First Nations and Native American legends indicate a large quake and tsunami in the late 1600s or early 1700s. We can only calculate the exact date by comparing Japanese tsunami records. This is why cultures need to develop literacy early on. 1788 – The British First Fleet, led by Arthur Phillip, sails into Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour) to establish Sydney, the first permanent European settlement on Australia. Commemorated as Australia Day. But how should such an event be commemorated? 1808 – The Rum Rebellion is the only successful (albeit short-lived) armed takeover of the government in Australia. The traditional twentieth anniversary gift, armed insurrection. 1863 – American Civil War: Despite having the best facial hair of any Union officer, General Ambrose Burnside is relieved of command of the Army of the Potomac after the disastrous Fredericksburg campaign. He is replaced by Joseph Hooker. Hooker's name would also live on after the war, but not to describe hairstyles. 1905 – Birth Maria von Trapp, Austrian-American singer and author. A singing Nun walks into the Anschluß… Someone should make a movie about this. 1950 – The Constitution of India comes into force, forming a republic. Rajendra Prasad is sworn in as its first President of India. Observed as Republic Day in India. Did India really pick the date just because the Australians looked like they were having a good time? 1962 – Ranger 3 is launched to study the Moon. The space probe later misses the moon by 22,000 miles. That is more than ten times the Moon's diameter of 2,159 miles. If the US space program was supposed to be a demonstration of our missile technology, accuracy like that should terrify everyone who is not the intended target of American ICBMs. 1965 – Hindi becomes the official language of India. Is it wise to allow the people to use their most widely spoken language for official business? The colonial powers have only been gone for fifteen years. 1980 – Israel and Egypt establish diplomatic relations. A respected and prominent Middle Eastern state that is primarily Muslim and significantly Arabian is willing to conduct business with Israel. This should allow the other states in the region to recognize... No? Not even a little? 1992 – Boris Yeltsin announces that Russia will stop targeting United States cities with nuclear weapons. It turns out that Russia would target the US through other means. 1998 – Lewinsky scandal: On American television, U.S. President Bill Clinton denies having had "sexual relations" with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The "investigation" was supposed to be about an insider trading land deal where everyone involved lost money back when Clinton was Governor of Arkansas. But no one seems to remember that part of the story.

  17. Story, Friday Jan 25, 2019

Consider how Grace reacted to WWII. And remember the fact that she and her siblings were raised as "Monsters" Sure, Pandora was the eccentric aunt to all her friends. But I wonder if some of her reaction is due to her feelings towards the aberrations? I would not find it surprising for Grace to feel some sort of empathy towards beings who would not or could not feel anything for her.
  18. Story Wednesday January 23, 2019

Too bad they don't know anyone who could arrange an FBI background check.

NFL coach and commentator John Madden frequently observed that weight was a universal constant. If someone lost weight, he would gain weight. As long as neither Nanase nor Sarah end up looking like John Madden, what ever "balancing" they need to do should be ok.
  20. This Day In History

23 January 393 – Roman Emperor Theodosius I proclaims his eight-year-old son Honorius co-emperor. We still respect the ideals of the Roman Republic and the Roman Senate. The office of Emperor is not hereditary. I'm declaring my eight year old son to be co-emperor because he is better qualified for the job than any of the available politicians. 971 – Using crossbows, Song dynasty troops soundly defeat a war elephant corps of the Southern Han at Shao. After Hannibal failed to defeat Rome with elephants, even after crossing the Alps, one would have thought word would have gotten out that pachyderm cavalry is not as effective as advertised. 1570 – James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray, regent for the infant King James VI of Scotland, is assassinated by firearm, the first recorded instance of such. Scotland, you are so rarely first in anything not involving bagpipes or thistles. Why did you have to be first in this sport? 1571 – The Royal Exchange opens in London. I was offered a trade of three Viscounts and a second round pick in the next Monty Python draft for an Earl, two Lairds, and a Spice Girl to be named later. The deal fell apart when I refused to give up any Python draft picks. 1795 – After an extraordinary charge across the frozen Zuiderzee, the French cavalry captured 14 Dutch ships and 850 guns, in a rare occurrence of a battle between ships and cavalry. Training cavalry for naval engagements would lead to the sport of Water Polo. 1909 – RMS Republic, a passenger ship of the White Star Line, becomes the first ship to use the CQD ▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄ distress signal after colliding with another ship, the SS Florida, off the Massachusetts coastline, an event that kills six people. The Republic sinks the next day. A bit of advice for White Star, it would probably be a good idea to make sure all your ships are familiar with radio distress signals. No particular reason. 1941 – Charles Lindbergh testifies before the U.S. Congress and recommends that the United States negotiate a neutrality pact with Adolf Hitler. The man who proved to the average American that America was not an isolated and unreachable island was himself the greatest advocate of American Isolationism. 1957 – American inventor Walter Frederick Morrison sells the rights to his flying disc to the Wham-O toy company, which later renames it the "Frisbee". Dogs and Hippies have never been closer. 2003 – From 80 AU away, a very weak signal from Pioneer 10 is detected for the last time, but no usable data can be extracted. With the radio no longer working, whoever finds the probe will have only the plaque to let them know who sent it. Little naked humans serving huge machines.
  21. This Day In History

22 January 1561 – Birth of Francis Bacon, English philosopher and politician, Attorney General for England and Wales. Now he can start writing Shakespeare's plays. 1584 – Parts of Switzerland adopt Gregorian calendar. Other parts would not convert until 1812. Is this an exercise in neutrality by keeping two calendars? Or is the Swiss calendar full of holes to emulate the Swiss Cheese? 1689 – The Convention Parliament convenes to determine whether James II and VII, the last Roman Catholic monarch of England, Ireland and Scotland, had vacated the thrones of England and Ireland when he fled to France in 1688. Short answer? Yes. 1879 – The Anglo-Zulu War. The Battle of Isandlwana results in a British defeat. Meanwhile, 71km away from Isandlwana, the Battle of Rorke's Drift results in a British victory and the 1964 Cinema classic, Zulu. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSEU5zHgcTc 1901 – Death of Queen Victoria after a reign of over 63 years. Edward VII is proclaimed King beginning an unstable period of four British Kings in just half a century. A steady presence on the throne would not be restored until Victoria's great-great-granddaughter ascended to the crown fifty one years later. 1934 – Birth of Bill Bixby, American actor and director. Don't make him angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry. 1946 – Creation of the Central Intelligence Group, forerunner of the Central Intelligence Agency. Additional commentary classified. 1957 – The New York City "Mad Bomber", George P. Metesky, is arrested in Waterbury, Connecticut and charged with planting more than 30 bombs. A bit of perspective, random violence will not "teach a lesson" to the bureaucrats and lawyers who deny to you what you claim you are due. Even if you scare away or hurt one, they reproduce like Tribbles and many more will fill any vacancy. 1959 – Birth of Linda Blair, American actress. Don't feed her Pea Soup. You wouldn't like her eating Pea Soup. 1968 – Operation Igloo White, a US electronic surveillance system to stop communist infiltration into South Vietnam begins installation. Because nothing is more covert than a white igloo in the jungles of South East Asia. 1973 – The Supreme Court of the United States delivers its decisions in Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, legalizing elective abortion in all fifty states. Ok, that's settled. Now we can get on with the other issues facing the nation. 1984 – Super Bowl XVIII. During the third quarter, a commercial is broadcast across America for the first time. This would also be the last time the manufacturer would pay to have this commercial aired https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zfqw8nhUwA
