ChronosCat reacted to Amiable Dorsai in Comic for Monday, Feb 21, 2022
Both Tara and Andrea thought that "I am in search of Avalon" was a code phrase that they could use to get help (presumably from people in the know about the two-sided nature of the world). Was this just another of Volty's lies, or is there an underground network of some sort that has so far escaped Edward's attention?

The problem with using Zeno's method of explaining why you can't do something is that eventually you reach Planck length and you _do_ make it to your goal.

A fellow on another forum I read, recently participated in a furmeet in London. He says that as they were walking down the sidewalk to a nearby park, a bloke out smoking in front of a bar asked if it was a protest calling for "... um... more cuteness in the world?"
(The answer was, of course, "Yes... yes it is.")

Hm... I initially misread that. Running with it...
Squirrels are in fact omnivores. Their regular diet includes insects and small lizards. They'll raid birds' nests for eggs or baby birds when they think they can get away with it. But they don't have a special interest in horses.

There's also the fact that it looks really awkward to hold in such a way that your finger is over the trigger but not pressing it. (As someone who has used squirt guns and other toy guns before but never a real gun, this is the first thing that came to mind.)

Back when Arthur was making Kevin (probably 1970s-80s), the legal ages for drinking and smoking were still 18 in many states rather than 21. Ashley is 18, so therefore old enough that she might be doing those things according to that standard. Do note that Ashley’s friend Liz is a smoker.

Thank you for the kind words on Ant Farm Melee and Ereis Overture! I do appreciate it. No worries about not checking in - your own issues are more important, naturally. I'm just glad you're listening to it in the first place!

I interpreted him by as being incredulous that Grace would not be boastful—he was expecting her either to rise to his challenge or back down, rather than giving an answer that amounts to “It doesn’t really matter to me whether I can beat you or not”.

The floating timeline especially becomes an issue when characters’ origins are tied to specific historical events. For example, Marvel’s Captain America and Magneto, and DC’s Wonder Woman, have origins closely linked to World War Two.

ChronosCat got a reaction from The Old Hack in So, is JKR a transphobe?
You didn't miss much; as the series went on it got more dark and serious and lost a lot of what made the early books fun, and the final book was a mess in multiple ways (the most glaring for me on the first read being how bloated it was with plot threads that didn't go anywhere and scenes that seemed to exist mostly to make sure we felt just how tedious everything was for the characters; Harry also made a number of decisions I considered immoral but the text never called him out on it, which has bothered me more since I began to more critically examine the series).

ChronosCat reacted to The Old Hack in So, is JKR a transphobe?
I agree. Shakespeare was an obvious anti-Semite, for example. H. P. Lovecraft was extremely racist. And so forth. However, there is an important difference between them and JKR, namely that she is alive and politically active in our present day and time. She is a supporter of a hate group and continues to produce and help disperse transphobic propaganda. That makes her far more dangerous and an issue that needs to be continuously addressed and watched. Shakespeare, on the other hand, may safely remain in the field of literary analysis.

ChronosCat reacted to The Old Hack in So, is JKR a transphobe?
Forgive me for disagreeing, but I do not think anyone needs to justify either their rejection or acceptance of JKR's work. It is an individual decision and each person is free to make it on their own. I made the decision to reject JKR on the basis of my mental health; I decided to not keep reminders around of someone who considers me mentally deranged and a danger to society. Others may reject her on a different basis and still others might decide to keep her books because they are still good entertainment for them. None of these decisions are inherently right or wrong.
What is important is to openly acknowledge the problematic parts of her works and recognizing her blatant hostility towards trans men and women. If you remain aware of this, you can challenge these ideas when her books present them to you and not allow them a potentially easy foothold by just letting them pass. Defending JKR and saying "Oh, she didn't really mean to be transphobic" is basically trans erasure and supporting transphobia.
I am actually sad that I had to let these books go. I used to like them. But so be it. It is unfortunate that JKR has decided to dedicate a large part of her life to hate; she could be spending it in so many better and healthier ways.

ChronosCat reacted to Darth Fluffy in So, is JKR a transphobe?
Yes. On the Monday January 10 thread, Don Edwards posted this:
It does backpedal somewhat, but it is not an apology nor an admission of being wrong, and I wonder if it is mostly a reaction to the backlash.
I don't know JKR, but it seems like the people who know her were appalled; especially the young, now adult actors who worked in her setting for years.
Clearly Old Hack, who has a horse in this race, so to speak, is offended, and has done more research than I have. I'll defer to that.

You would have to be more specific about which monuments you mean. Tearing down Confederate monuments, in particular, have to do with discrediting an (allegedly) fictitious account of the South's motivation being other than slavery, and being more noble overall. How do the people doing this feel about the objects they are removing? Well, imagine how a statue of Gen. Sherman would be received in Atlanta. I'm not following that any great accomplishment of any individual is being disregarded by removing these.

ChronosCat got a reaction from The Old Hack in NP Comic Saturday January 15, 2022
When I first read the strip, my thought was "Why are we getting more of Grace's classmates talking about her, we've already had that when Justin overheard them!". Hence the speculation about stalling for time (though Dan hasn't done that for while, and I think he has this story already pretty planned out, so I'd be surprised if that was the case).
Now that you mention it, it could be to show what else they're saying (and not saying) about her. But if it was specifically supposed to emphasize that they aren't close to figuring out her secrets, it didn't really work for me as that point didn't even occur to me.
It was an honest question! I never use my time travel to get spoilers for series written by authors I trust (such as Dan).

That is my least favorite version of winter weather. That combines the worst of all the kinds of precipitation. Good luck and I hope you don't have to drive after it stops or that your city sand/salts quickly.

There is a distinct line between "I don't really care for that body shape" and "That body shape is wrong". You are well on the good side of the line.

The two critic girls look kind of like early Peanuts characters Violet and Patty (not Peppermint Patty). It would be in character for them.

I explained myself poorly and posted without thinking about the topic, and I apologize for that. I was speaking of bullies in general, not of Tony specifically; it is indeed valid to speculate how his bullying actions might have been born. As to what may be done about the bully, which action may be taken is uncertain to me; as I stated earlier it is a very complex matter far beyond my field of expertise. All I know is that the current general practice of simply ignoring the matter and allowing the children themselves to sort things out (or more likely, not) is suboptimal.

ChronosCat reacted to mlooney in Things That Make You Happy
While not 100% make me happy, I just got a piece of mail from the Social Security people that wasn't a "We want to review your status" message, just one telling me what my benefits for the year is. Also glad that I see that the Post Office is still forwarding my mail.

ChronosCat got a reaction from The Old Hack in Holy [censored], the forums are back?!
So I just finished re-reading the reaction threads over on Keenspot (a project I started not long after the initial move to the 910CMX forums; it was a low priority project, and a long one too) and feeling nostalgic I decided to take another look over here. I really wasn't expecting to see new posts, particularly as I checked back periodically through 2020 and I believe even early this year. Seeing the forums active again really was quite the pleasant shock; it's almost like an early Christmas present!
Hopefully the forums remain usable for years more; I've always liked this community, and I've yet to find a form of interaction online I like better than forums (I have a hard time comprehending how Reddit is supposed to work, and Discord is too "in-the-moment" for me; I like to be able to look back at a conversation and see how it's developed).
So, in conclusion, hello everybody; it's nice to be back.

Bishop strikes me as being the sort who can be a valuable agent, but needs to be kept on a leash and should not be allowed to have command authority over others.

I'd like this one to be canon, but we didn't get the canon cannon. Unless The Dan decides to do the "last strip in the arc gets the cannon" like he did for "For Reals".

I would really like it if The Dan dropped the Saturday NP and did sketchbooks, until he's caught up with them. He' month behind on them now.
