HarJIT reacted to CritterKeeper in EGS Pin Up Fan Art 13 January, 2017
Am I the only one who wants to see the actual characters we know and love, and not some distorted figure that doesn't look like them anymore?

I thought the clotted cream reference would be the worse of the two.

You have my sympathies as well. Sometimes it is as life simply cannot get enough ordure dropped at you from a great height. If it is any help at all, our thoughts are with you and we will all be with you as you go through this. You are a poster I greatly value for your dry humour, your keen wit and your insights. You are an important reason that this forum is the place it is and so you may freely lean on us when you need to.
Be well, old friend, and take care.

HarJIT reacted to The Old Hack in EGS TvTropes pages
Some laws are like that. I was amazed by how comparatively lenient American laws on counterfeit money are in comparison to Danish laws. I learned this when I heard from a NJ news channel that someone had paid their bill at a Dairy Queen with a $200 bill. The bill prominently featured a picture of George W. Bush and the obverse featured a White House with two signs reading 'No More Scandals' and 'No More Taxes.' (This was back in 2002 or 2003, I think.) All these facts together meant that this did not rate as attempted counterfeiting because it was 'obvious' it was not legal tender. (To everybody except the poor sap behind the counter at the DQ, that is.)
In Denmark it counts as counterfeiting if you make something that even vaguely LOOKS like something that could conceivably be legal tender. If the text on it reads 'Kroner', there is a number and it is roughly shaped like a paper money bill, you can get nailed HARD for producing it and risk from six to twelve years of prison. Even if it is a 1337-kroner bill with nekkid women on it. It is still attempted counterfeiting.
I am not attempting to criticise either law. I am sure both governments had their reasons for formulating their respective laws the way they did. I am simply bemused by the variations and am morally certain that if you look at just a few more countries you will see even more extreme differences.

Sorry. Bad phrasing. "Wear off" would probably convey the idea better.
I should know better. Ever since moving to Florida, I tried (and failed) to catch a LOT of geckos that disturbed my mother. And I wound up with too many lost tails on the porch. That scene might be amusing to a cruel elementary school student, but not to anyone with empathy. And still mom kept asking me to do something about the geckos.

I tend to agree. If policing there must be, I'd much prefer a law that allows or proscribes behavior.
That would mean someone who is being polite and keeping to themselves is protected. If someone else throws open the bathroom stall door acting as some self-appointed bathroom police, I'd rather they be the ones charged with the crime, even if the individual in the stall is using the "wrong" bathroom.

As you are probably aware, this is a fan forum tribute to a comic anniversary. And as you know fan forum tributes always suck.
Always!
And of course our fan forum tribute will be no exception.
Yup!

HarJIT got a reaction from ProfessorTomoe in Forum interface fixes: Greasemonkey-wrapped custom stylesheet
I've noticed that some changes seem to have been made to how sidebars show up on profile pages. While this is positive in general, it does not play well with my existing fixes, causing all the text to completely camouflage. I have therefore redone my profile page fixing, as well as taking the opportunity to sort out the settings page while I was at it. Current version.

Dang, 106 is pretty good! I don't think we can hold this one against 2016.

HarJIT reacted to mlooney in Things That Make You Happy
My former employer, and let me stress former, called me today at about the height of the effects of second dose of NyQuil I had taken. This might have had some effect on my state of mind. I told him what I thought of him personally, what I thought of his business model, his massive amount of paranoia, his offered pay scale, his lack of understanding of both copyright and trademark law, his zero tolerance for any mistakes regardless of reason, and my general dislike of America small business that off shore IT functions. Then I started into his idea that a one man IT department/web developer can rapidly convert a web site to be "just like Amazon's". And by rapidly I mean under a week. "Just use their HTML". I then reminded him of intellectual property law. A short discussion about his hostile working environment being a major cause of my current mental state, of which I had doctor's reports to back me up with and the very limited amount of money I am allowed to make while on permanent disability, of which I hope to be pushing when Edge of Imperial Space is finished.
After all of this he still asked what it would take to get me to be a consultant for him.
I laughed like a madman and hung up the phone and added his number to my phone's auto reject list.
Damn that was a great feeling. Very cathartic.

HarJIT reacted to Don Edwards in Things That Are Just Annoying
A few years ago, on one election day, the voters of the state of Washington approved both recreational marijuana and gay marriage.
Prompting some wag to suggest they were endorsing the Old Testament edict (which had been misinterpreted for centuries) that a man who lies with another man should be stoned.

And the Grinch, with his grinch feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling. "How could it be so?
It came without ribbons! It came without tags!
It came without packages, boxes, or bags!"
He puzzled and puzzed till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before.
Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store.
Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more!

Well, in most situations, the author could be considered the biggest fan of the material. So...I don't see a problem with the author writing fanfiction...

HarJIT got a reaction from Matoyak in Grammatical Overhaul: The Wiki
The history sections on some pages (Tedd for example) are far too long, and kinda duplicate the individual arc pages. Merging them with the arc pages and then abridging is the way to go. My initial attempts at abridging didn't get very far though.
However, before copying/moving anything, consult https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copying_within_Wikipedia. While Shiveapedia is not Wikipedia, it uses the same BY-SA licensing and therefore what is said on that page does apply. In short, in the edit summary, put a link to the source page from which you are copying/moving, so people browsing the target page edit history can consult the source page edit history for the original authors of the content, thus fulfilling the attribution requirement.

I wrote the phrase well aware that Grace sometimes calls Tedd "Teddy".

HarJIT reacted to Red Regent in Things that make you sad.
TL;DR: I'm sad because there's too much politics in all the media I consume now.
I'm a media consumer, we all are, we have our likes and dislikes and so forth. Most of the content-creators I follow at least try to stay out of politics or if they have to deal with these issues at least approach them in a neutral perspective. The only problem is, is that with the build-up and fallout over the 2016 election (the US one) more and more of my favorite content creators have been making more and more politically charged content, which is sometimes fine, but more often than not I find myself disapproving of because they decide to paint and demonize their opponents in one way or another, or at worst create a review stating "Maybe we should consider our opponent's perspective." while still demonizing them in an act of blatant hypocrisy.
Guys, as a foreign (to most of you) guy who is sick and tired of non-stop coverage of the election from foreign and local news and have references to it in basically any other media he consumed, I find it unbelievably tiring to find all that in the one place I never wanted to see it.
