  1. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Here’s some chibi-style heroes to recognize MaroonDrops’ winning entry in the Generated Fan Art category! MaroonDrops won the Traditional category last year, and was thus ineligible to win in the same category for a second year in a row, but that didn’t stop her from creating a winning entry in the Generated category! I could be wrong, but she may be the first person to win both categories back-to-back…! I also want to give a shout-out to the runner up, TheSlugCar, who always enters at least one category each year. This year, they turned the staff of C.R.A.S.H. into South Park characters! I don’t think that they’ll intimidate any supervillains in that form… except maybe crab people…! Many thanks to MaroonDrops, TheSlugCar, and everyone else who entered my contest or wished me well on my birthday! :-)
  2. http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com For the second non-consecutive time, the winner is Ken Bailey! It was a tough competition this year, with pieces from lots of talented webcomic artists (whose work you should totally check out!). Many thanks to all our contestants: Ken Bailey, Anna Frohling, Michael VanSlyke, Ave Messer, Corey Kramer, Shaney, and David Fleming! Also, a special shout-out to MaroonDrops, who sent in fan art based on Enticia's backstory for my birthday, knowing full well that it wouldn't be a valid entry for the contest (since she won in this category last year, and the rules say you can't win in the same category two years in a row). Next week: the winner of the Generated Fan Art category!
  3. 5/9/20 - Wolf Whistle

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Like most teenagers, Enticia thinks she has everything all figured out… until she doesn’t. Jackknife is absolutely a jerk, wolf-whistling is most definitely rude, and Enticia’s completely in the right to be angry at both. But whether Enticia’s powers are manipulating people’s minds, hearts, or both, it’s not exactly an appropriate reaction. And sometimes when people make excuses to justify their actions, it can be a slippery slope to excusing worse actions. Thankfully, Enticia’s managed to make some unlikely allies – perhaps even friends – to help her put things into perspective. Wolf Blitz has shown up in the comic at least twice, but this is the first time we see him without “heart eyes”. He’s even got his paws on a Heroball, which Dino-Mo said he used to play in the Gym-Nauseum storyline. Interface makes his debut in today’s strip! I think that I had Wade from Kim Possible and KidVid from the Burger King Kids’ Club in the back of my mind when I created this guy. He can hook up to computers and other devices to take control of them or download their information into his brain. His suit can also display information via printout, the display on his visor, or even a hologram. He’s about as good a hacker as Belt Boy and B.O.N.N.I.E., but his arsenal of tools is significantly more limited. The third panel references Belt Boy offering a mechanical hand to Enticia after beating her on the X-Platform in the Ally Need Is Love storyline. The picture of Cannon shows him listening to Enticia after failing to break up Belt Boy and Titanium Maiden’s date in The Dating Scheme. Titanium Maiden is wearing her gym clothes from Gym-Nauseum, standing sternly as she did when she defended Belt Boy’s trust in Enticia. Dino-Mo also wears her outfit from that same storyline, in which she gave Enticia a major reality check. It’s almost my birthday, folks! You only have until the 19th to draw fan art or make a fan avatar of my characters! Don’t forget; the full rules are on my website!
  4. http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Now presenting MaroonDrops' wallpaper request from last year: A C.R.A.S.H. Yearbook Page! Once again, it's taken me months to get a desktop wallpaper prize done, but as always, I hope it was worth the wait! If you go to my Downloads page, there's two versions of this wallpaper: one with signatures and one without. I wanted to make sure this yearbook page captured all my characters' personalities through their poses, their superlatives, and their signatures. If I ever get my comic published, I might reuse this image as a cast page at the front of the book. Belt Boy, as usual, overdoes things, with his signature "using a fan to make his cape blow in the wind" pose and writing/drawing WAY too much around his photo. B.O.N.N.I.E. snuck her way into the photo, too, not that BB minds. Cannon's using his classic finger guns, minus the wink. This pose shows off his bravado and womanizing, while subtly hinting at his "power" (or more accurately, his namesake weapon). Whoever owns this yearbook seems to have scribbled Cannon's phone number out. Dino-Mo's next, rather than Titanium Maiden; this IS a yearbook, after all, so it's alphabetical order. Dino-Mo's showing off her power (and how she got the second of her two superlatives), but she plays it cool better than Belt Boy or Cannon. Dodge tends to be outgoing without being aggressive (whenever he's not playing dodgeball, at least), so I gave him a simple pose where he's subtly showing off his biceps, but not being a stereotypical, showboating jock. Enticia's a major flirt, so rather than use a pen, I figure she'd sign her yearbooks with a kiss. Even her lips in the picture are pouting just a little bit - usually, I draw my characters' mouths off to the side a bit (a la 1990's Sonic the Hedgehog), rather than centered. Gelatin Boy embarrasses himself a lot, so I decided to draw him mid-sneeze - at the "ah-" before the "-choo!" His shadow has a slight orange tinge, since he's translucent gelatin. His larger shadow shows he's a bit closer to the camera than everyone else (Making up for the fact that I drew him bigger than everyone by mistake). Jackknife, of course, is holding the sneeze powder he used on Gelatin Boy, and also flexing to show his muscles and his arm blade. Of course, seeing as several other heroes drew on his face, and the yearbook's owner didn't ask for his signature, no one's impressed. Also, I drew him smaller so I had room for his arm, and moved his shadow to show that he's close to the wall behind him. If I knew how to use a blur tool more effectively, I'd have used it for Sugar Rush's photo, so I'll chalk it up to superheroes having invented cameras built to photograph speedsters. The heart for her and Dodge seems appropriate for Valentine's weekend (a happy coincidence). I love when Titanium Maiden pulls off that heart pose (Based on Spanish Olympic weightlifter Valentin), so I just had to put that in here. The adorable amazon signed her name and colored her heart with a pink pen - in hindsight, I regret not making it a glitter pen. Finally, Unk, as the most chill person in the comic, has the most "normal" pose out of everyone. If it weren't for his ripped shirt, you'd think it was just a normal school photo. I'm particularly proud of the backgrounds in this photo; I wanted everyone to have their picture in front of one of those traditional blue-gray, slate-looking backgrounds that EVERYONE uses for school pictures. Of course, since it's almost 3 months until my birthday, I'm holding my annual birthday contest! ALL valid entries get some art from me, and you might even get to decide what my next desktop wallpaper would be! I've attached a quick rundown picture to this post; full rules are on my site!
  5. 1/4/2020 - 20s Expectations

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com The three main takeaways I've seen. I'm hoping for the Mode 7 Ninja Turtles level. Starting 2020 off with a filler, due to continued holiday craziness. This comic was a bit of a rush job, as I fell asleep before it was done, but I decided to value promptness over perfection this time. Wish I'd drawn TM's bent leg better (so it was more obvious her foot was behind her and not look like she was missing a leg) & made BB's board light up more. I had to look at quite a few photos and sketches of 1920s outfits to find the look I wanted for TM, and add a few touches to add her own personal style to the look. I decided to give her a purple dress; in hindsight (2020!), it makes her look like Anne Onymous from The Wotch. Belt Boy's look is a futuristic mashup of his outfit and a Ninja Turtles design, since it's based on the Neon Night Riders level from the SNES game Turtles in Time, which took place in 2020. Just like Back to the Future, this game lied to us about having hoverboards by now. Cannon's plague doctor look is essentially a regular plague doctor with his color scheme and goggles... and an important message. Seriously, people, I don't care what side effects you believe vaccines have - THEY PREVENT DEATH. Trust science on this one. Hoping to have a new comic by next week. Until then, have a fun and safe new year/decade!
  6. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com! Thanksgiving is upon us! Ah, yes... that time honored tradition... Also known as National Gluttony Day, it is probably best described in the words of the great 20th century philosopher, Garfield the cat: "the day people celebrate food by eating as much of it as possible." That's exactly what it is, not some junk about being thankful for what you have or perpetuating a skewed myth about history that romanticizes the relationship between early colonists and native peoples. It's just the food thing. Yup. Let’s put slightly depressing jokes aside and get to something more pleasant: some of the hidden details in this filler. I wanted this fridge to look like a retro, 1950s-era fridge; I’ve always wanted a kitchen with a 1950s diner theme, albeit one with candy apple red rather than grayish green in the color scheme. I’m known to call the fridge the “Frigidator” and I’m not sure why; either I just decided to pronounce “refrigerator” in a silly way on a whim, or I picked it up from another member of my family… but either way I decided to turn it into this fridge’s brand name. My family has had smiley face fridge magnets before; I gave them an emoji-like appearance for this filler. The alphabet magnets shown are a gold B (for Belt Boy), a green C (for Cannon or for Caped Cod), and – at the bottom – a pink T (for Titanium Maiden). The “Hang In There” magnet shows a tiny sloth, if you can tell. I was going to draw a monkey instead of the usual cat, but I figured a gray sloth would stand out better than a brown monkey against the brown tree branch. The shopping list includes some Thanksgiving foods. The message at the top right is supposed to be on the inside of a greeting card. Max/Belt Boy’s hand turkey is well-drawn, but not well-colored; his artistic skills are mainly limited to design, as he’s had to draw up blueprints many a time. Caped Cod drew very well considering he was holding the crayon with fins. Hope you liked this filler! Due to all the craziness around Thanksgiving, there will be a filler right after Thanksgiving as well, but I have a little something special planned, so keep your eyes open for something fun next week...! Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving! P.S.: Also, please consider donating to a food bank with cash or with fresh nonperishables (If you're just cleaning out your pantry and donating a can that's rusty or a few years old, you deserve to step on a Lego brick).
  7. 10/26/19 - #Halloween2019

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Miss Sunflower makes rocket boots look easy... But to be fair, she's not quite so... *ahem* top-heavy. Sugar Rush is dressed as Akko from Little Witch Academia, an anime series that's part Harry Potter (focusing on a predestined kid and their two best friends at a magic school) and part Kiki's Delivery Service (anime witch girl whose magic serves as a metaphor for art and creativity). I thought this outfit was a good fit for her, as both Akko and Sugar Rush are both super-excitable and a little impulsive. Her comment about zombies making everything better is inspired by a friend of mine on whom Sugar Rush is based; said friend is a huge fan of zombies. Dino-Mo is dressed as the title character from the Shantae series of video games. I tend to use her and Enticia's Halloween costumes to show support for POC in media, and this year is no exception. Granted, Shantae - a belly-dancing, hair-whipping, shape-shifting genie who fights pirates and monsters - likely has her origins in the nation of Turkey (based on analysis of her belly-dancing style), and Dino-Mo's nationality is half-Mexican, half-Native American, but I felt that this game series deserves some recognition, and I don't have any characters from Turkey. Drawing this costume was a bit tricky; I've never shown this much of Dino-Mo's skin before, as she tends to prefer t-shirts, so I had to decide how to draw her chest and musculature. Titanium Maiden always dresses up as a redheaded character each year, but this Halloween she's dressed up as two! In the first panel, she's dressed up as the shy Sakura from Zombie Land Saga - a bizarre, funny anime that I don't want to give too many details about. It's one of those shows that defies the genres it's associated with, so I don't want to give you any notions about what it's supposed to be, because it's so much better than it sounds as a concept on paper. It's a short anime at only one season (for now) made of 12 episodes, so I recommend giving it a look. There's a bit of language and a small bit of body horror/violence, but it's mostly comedic, with one episode about midway through that makes everyone cry. Just trust me, and watch it. After the Steven Universe movie and the initial series ending, I couldn't resist dressing Enticia as the beautiful and stoic Garnet. If you've been sleeping on this series, watch it NOW. This show has deep characters that evolve and change over the course of the series, and their growth feels natural as the series delves into the mysteries and lore of this world, exploring darker and darker themes. Heck, the first episode has Steven upset over his favorite ice cream being discontinued, then five seasons later he's on trial for his mother's war crimes. I said it before, and I'll say it again: Just trust me, and watch it. Belt Boy dresses as a superhero every Halloween; it may be a BIT of a stretch, but I think that K.O. from OK, K.O.! Let's Be Heroes counts as a superhero, in that he's a hero with superpowers (he just happens to be in a world where almost everyone's a hero and has powers). Another great Cartoon Network series, OK, K.O.! is - much like my comic - a love letter to 80s/90s cartoons and video games (even featuring cameos from Captain Planet, the students from Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School, and Sonic the Hedgehog!). I was originally going to show this series some love by having Cannon dress up as a helmeted side character, Sparko, but I decided against it, as it felt like whitewashing a POC character. So, I wound up dressing Belt Boy as K.O. instead. Titanium Maiden's original costume is that of David Fleming's Ms. Rocket. David's my giftee in the Collective of Heroes Halloween art exchange! I had sketched TM as his comic's title character, Ms. Rocket, as thanks for his birthday fan art submission earlier this year. I loved the pose I drew her in, and couldn't get I this filler's visual gag out of my head, so I decided to put it into this year's Halloween filler. If you want to check out his comic, The Adventures of Ms. Rocket (Which has a girl with rocket boots as she begins her career as a superheroine), visit my Links page. And if you want to see his submission to my birthday fan art contest, visit my newly updated Fan Art page! Have a happy and safe Halloween everyone!
  8. http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com I'm happy to say that the site's major updates are complete! The newest fan art pieces have been added to the Fanart gallery (although I may give the format an overhaul in the near future!), and - as I announced last week - all filler sketches and new comics I created over the summer have been retroactively added to the website. But as you can see from the filler this week, I have more stuff planned! After years of the comic being SOLELY a labor of love, I'm working on doing some art prints to sell at local conventions! I've got my eye on Lehigh Valley Comic Convention - a bimonthly convention that I haven't been to in ages due to a lack of personal funds and projects to unveil. But that's changing soon, and these art prints will be the start of it! I'm also looking at selling some small 'zines, getting some of my art print designs put on shirts, and down the line, I'd like to self-publish the first HoC book (Most likely through Lulu); I've got a rough copy, but I'm revising and re-revising it, still. Oh well... patience is a virtue!
  9. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com The site's being updated again! Strips and fillers I previously posted to social media are now retroactively on the website! After nearly two months of no computer and another two of having a computer, but no changes to the website... after hemming and hawing and lots of drawing... I finally got the programs I need to update my website! I needed a replacement for Dreamweaver and wound up getting ExpressionWeb 4. It took some getting used to, but it was pretty intuitive. Tonight, I downloaded Filezilla and had to figure out my old settings and passwords and junk to get it to connect to my site (Which I'm glad I figured out without needing to bother my techno-savvy friend Chris!). I found myself going back and making some tweaks to several links and file names to get all the new pages to work properly. So yeah... it was a lot of work. At the moment, I have put every filler and story strip from July 22nd up through this filler onto the website, and updated the Plotline Archive page accordingly. I plan on making updates to the Fan Art page next. BB and TM look great in their construction gear. Cannon figured it would be redundant to wear a helmet when he's already got one, but seems he forgot that construction gear also makes you more visible to other workers! I definitely like this filler; I may use it again the next time my site needs some sprucing up...!
  10. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Hey, folks! I'm still working on getting my website updated, AND I won't have a new update next week while I'm in San Antonio, so here's this week's comic AND some delicious recipes for Heroes of C.R.A.S.H. milkshakes! Not much to say about today's comic, except that some of the dialogue about feelings was inspired by a book I had as a child about sticking up for yourself. It's important to recognize that feelings aren't good or bad in and of themselves; they just need to be dealt with in a healthy way. I'd previously thought of trying to turn HoC into either an ice cream flavor or some sort of cereal (After all, my comic is based on Saturday morning cartoons, and what goes better with them than cereal?). But when Jessi Sheron, creator of the webcomic The Sea in You (Check my Links page!), started the #MakeYourComicADrink hashtag on Twitter, I thought of what to do with my comic. I had considered some sort of float, soda combination, or hot chocolate mix, but then Jessi suggested I do a milkshake. Brilliant! I could take my ideas for HoC ice cream flavors, and make them milkshakes, which are WAY easier to make! So here's three recipes based on my main three heroes! I have some ideas for other recipes for my other heroes as well, but these three seem like an ideal place to start. Give them a try and let me know how you like them! #webcomic #webcomics #comic #comics #superhero #superheroes #superheroine #superheroines #milkshake #milkshakes
  11. http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com I was pleased to get quite a few great entries for my annual Birthday Fan Art Contest this year! I have to admit; I was a little suprised to see the winning entry on the last day of the contest, and from a newcomer, no less! But his entry not only showcased some great art, but it captured Belt Boy's personality. Belt Boy would TOTALLY post a villain capture to social media with puns, emojis, and hashtags! Thanks again, MaroonDrops; for winning my contest, you get to choose the next desktop wallpaper that I draw! Congratulations! I also want to thank the other entrants this year. Due to some continued technical difficulties (my computer tends to freeze off and on during the summer months), I'm still working on the sketch prizes for the runners-up. I've got two down, two to go, so please be patient, folks! Enough about that, though; time to show off the other entries! David Fleming, creator of the totally awesome webcomic Ms. Rocket, drew this picture of Titanium Maiden striking a pose, proving that if anyone knows how to draw a buff, reheaded superheroine with a ponytail, it's him (He's had practice in that very specific category, after all!). Shaney, creator of the webcomic Heroes of the World Beyond (Or HOTWAB for short), drew Belt Boy and his faithful flying fish friend, Caped Cod. I don't see many drawings of BB's piscatory pal, so this was nice to see. Previous winner CD Rudd, creator of the webcomic SailorSun Dot Org, drew his characters and mine attending some sort of gala event. Wouldn't be the first time he's drawn my heroes in formalwear, since they cameoed in the big wedding scene that concluded his comic. And of course, it wouldn't be the annual birthday contest without an entry from longtime fan YouWillNeverKnow, who created some iconic movie posters based on my heroes' costumes. Has any other artist graced my Fan Art page as often? Guess I will never know! Unless I go to the Fan Art page and count, of course. But I don't want to. If you liked these pictures, be sure to visit David, Shaney, and CD Rudd's webcomics! All three of them are in webcomic communities alongside The Heroes Of C.R.A.S.H.; Ms. Rocket and HOTWAB are part of the Collective of Heroes, and SailorSun is part of the 910CMX community.
  12. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Sorry, folks, but I don’t have a new strip today. My computer has been running low on disk space, and it won’t let me even SAVE a new comic. I tried deleting a bunch of things after doing some backups, but it didn’t make much of a dent. I also couldn’t expand my C drive either. So I’m going to try to buy an external hard drive in the next few days (I have one for backups, but I’m looking to get one that would remain attached to my computer to expand the disk space). The only reason I didn’t get one sooner is because I also had to get some car repairs done this week. Hoo boy, when it rains…! I’m hoping to get things fixed before I need to post the results for my annual Birthday Fan Art Contest. With any luck, I may even be able to fix things in the next week. If, for any reason, I’m unable to fix things, I will post the winning contest entries on social media (along with all runners-up) and contact their artists, personally. So if you’re still planning on entering, please do so! To be honest, some fan art would certainly cheer me up about now!
  13. Comic 5/4/19 - Blueberried Secrets

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Starting off with a good old-fashioned recap! It's been a while since I started a storyline with a recap (or started a new storyline at all). The events of our last adventure set up this one so well, I felt that a recap was needed. Plus, the Collective of Heroes is doing a promotion for Free Comic Book Day, and a recap might be helpful for any new readers. But mostly I did this recap because I'd heard there was going to be lightning storms this week and I wanted something that could be drawn relatively quickly (of course, the storms never came). I like the gradient in the background and the layout of the panels. In addition to padding out the image a bit, the gradient gives the strip a foreboding atmosphere while the panels emphasize the two sides to this story. Don't forget to submit an entry to my contest by my birthday on May 19th! EVERY valid entry gets something in return, so read the full rules on my site!
  14. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com The title card for the latest storyline! Since it's merely a title card, there's not too much I can say, as I don't want to spoil anything. All I will say is that I was originally going to call it Confessions Parts 1 and 2, named after the Usher songs of the same name (which I'm only aware of because of Weird Al's Confessions Part 3). Also, don't forget that my birthday is next month, and I want some fan art! I've gotten two submissions to my contest, both in the Traditional category. If you want to send me something, you have until May 19th. Don't forget; EVERYONE who sends me a valid entry gets some art in return!
  15. 4/20/19 - Tying Up Some Loose Ends

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Looks like everyone's being taken care of... right? I'm sure someone will take care of Miss Sunflower soon enough. After all the trouble she caused, she deserves to have an itchy nose for a while. Dodge tried lecturing Gelatin Boy about being too dependant in the Gym Nauseum storyline, and he tried leaving him alone in this story. Looks like he's finally ready to have an actual dialogue with his friend to solve the problem. B.O.N.N.I.E. was originally going to have a different reaction in panel 3, but it didn't look quite right with her being drawn so tiny and with straight lines. I decided to do a little nod to Scott Pilgrim and allow the digital damsel to make a shocked face made from a semicolon and lowercase "o". Seems appropriate for an A.I. on a screen, no? Don't forget, you have less than a month to enter my #birthday #fanart#contest! I want some fan art for my birthday; all you need to do is draw one (or more) of my characters or make a video game avatar based on them. All valid entries get a prize - it may be a sketch, or it may be something better...! Check out TheHeroesOfCRASH.com and click on the button on the main page for the full rules!
  16. Comic 3/23/19 - In Over Her Head

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Enticia gets some surprising support, Ken Bailey sends some fan art that's NOT for my contest, and I restate the rules for anyone who WILL enter. Also, my internet's back! Whew, that's a lot to unpack in a Twitter-friendly blurb... Let's take it from the top. Due to some local internet outages, I was not able to update my site until I got it back this afternoon. Thankfully, I was able to post a picture of the latest comic (Taken from my camera's phone), as well as the other pictures below. Remember, folks, if my site hasn't updated, and I didn't announce it beforehand, check my Twitter, Tumblr, or Facebook posts; I'll usually be able to fill you in there. In this week's strip, Enticia recognizes what she's learned from her friends and from Dino-Mo. When Enticia says that Cannon made her realize her relationships have been hollow, she's referring to their discussion WAY back in strip 232. Belt Boy and TM have gained her trust slowly, but listening to her backstory throughout the Even a Rose Has its Thorns story certainly helped. Dino-Mo, of course, told Enticia off in the Gym-Nauseum storyline. I do like getting experimental with the format of my comics, and I like how I set up the three-part panel in the upper-right, turning the connections between word balloons into panel gutters. That was actually pretty fun! In other news (But not NEW news if you've been keeping up with my Facebook group!), I got some fan art that is NOT a submission for my annual Birthday Fan Art Contest that's currently going on right now. Why? Because the fan art in question happens to be from Ken Baily, who won last year with his awesome picture of Titanium Maiden alongside his own creation, EnergyGirl. However, the rules state that someone can't win in the same category for two years in a row, so unless he did something in the Generated Fan Art category, anything he submitted would be ineligible. But knowing that, he still decided to draw TM and E-Girl again for funsies, and because it IS for my (and my comic's) birthday. Thanks again, Ken! If YOU want to enter my contest, check out my website for the full rules! Ken got to pick the next HoC desktop wallpaper, and you could do the same this year! Even if you don't win, all valid entries get some art in return, making it a bit like an art trade as well as a contest. Good luck!
  17. 3/16/19 - Truth and Consequences

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Enticia declares that she's ready to face the music. I have to admit, outside of my main three, Enticia may be my favorite character. Quite a few of my characters have been based on aspects of myself and people I know, but Enticia's been sort of her own entity. She's grown and evolved as a character in ways I never predicted, whether it's on-screen or behind the scenes. Today's strip certainly marks a turning point for Enticia, but it hardly marks the end of her personal character development arc. I have big plans for Enticia in the future...! I typically prefer my comics to have a bit more comedy than drama. If my strip were a cartoon, we'd be coming to the "learning a lesson" part of the episode near the end, so it's a smidgeon more drama-heavy as of late. Still, it's not devoid of comedy; I think that having Unk carrying a grumbling, hog-tied Jackknife over is shoulder is pretty funny-looking. A side note: "Mr. Hellinger's Hardware" mentioned in the first panel gets its name from Hechinger - a hardware store chain that had a store near me when I was a kid - but with the "Heck" syllable changed into its more cussword-sounding form. This is about as close to swearing as my strip will ever get. Also, I was originally going to call the store "Mr. Hellinger's Tools 'n' Stuff", but it didn't fit as neatly in the word balloon, and I hate to miss an opportunity to use alliteration. DON'T FORGET: There's still two months left in my contest! Everyone who submits a valid entry will win some art in return, so get to drawing! Or avatar-building!
  18. 3/9/19 - Not-So-Visual Gag

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Belt Boy thanks his friends (and Jackknife). Unfortunately, he's still a little down. While he's willing to dust himself off and try again, that doesn't change the fact that he feels like he let his friends down. My comic may be based on Saturday Morning Cartoons, where most character's struggles can be solved in a half hour, but don't expect my characters' problems to have a quick fix. I was going to do a different pun with the title... I was thinking of combining Jackknife's name with the phrase "Gag me with a spoon", but "Gag me with a knife" sounds disturbing. Yeesh. Anyway, just as Belt Boy has thanked his friends, I'll be more than happy to thank you for entering my contest by giving you some free art! Check out my website for the full rules in order to submit a valid entry. Good luck!
  19. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Cannon helps Belt Boy and volunteers for the lesser of two annoyances. It might seem strange that Cannon would rather deal with B.O.N.N.I.E.'s emotions than his own. Cannon's perfectly fine about being brutally honest with others, and he's usually not shy about expressing himself, but it's way harder for him to be honest and expressive when it leaves him vulnerable. In fact, that's such a key component of his personality, I made it part of his character design: a thin, gangly frame protected by bulky armor. Belt Boy and Cannon do have a little bit of a bromance; I tried to sell that a bit more in the previous comic's last panel and moreso in this comic's first panel. Despite what he says, we know that it's Cannon who's jealous of TM, and not the other way around. Have you entered my #contest yet, by the way?
  20. http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Our characters hint at some long-awaited backstory finally being explained! While looking up my comic on the "TV Tropes" website, it described the event(s) that led to Cannon losing his hand and a large part of his arm as a "Noodle Incident", referring to a Calvin and Hobbes running gag where some backstory is brought up, but never explained. Well, I'm letting you know that the circumstances around Cannon's hand WILL be explained... in due time. You'll just need to be patient. Cannon REALLY doesn't like talking about what happened, which is why Belt Boy finds it all the more meaningful that Cannon was willing to talk about his hand to help him. Still reminding you that my contest is still going on, and ALL valid entries will win some art! I've gotten one entry already (a definite first; usually, I have people waiting until the last minute!), but there's still nearly three months to go, so there's plenty of time for more entries! Check out my website for the full rules, but here's a brief rundown:
  21. 2/16/19 - Belt Boy's Loose Lips

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Belt Boy lets some sensitive info slip. Also, my annual fanart contest begins! Belt Boy's slipping back into breakdown mode again, and his background in panel 3 shows it. That dark cloud is supposed to be reminiscent of the background from his dream at the beginning of this storyline. There's more I want to say about this scene, but I don't want to reveal too much just yet. All I will say is that the thing that Belt Boy has inadvertently foreshadowed is something I've been planning to mention for years...! My birthday's coming up in just three months, and what I'd really, REALLY like is some fan art and fan avatars! My annual birthday contest has begun once again, and there's two ways to submit entries: 1. If you're good at art, then you can draw/paint/sculpt my characters and e-mail it to me at heroesofcrash-at-yahoo-dot-com with the subject "Traditional Fan Art Contest". 2. If you're not good at art (or don't have all the supplies you need), you can create a custom character or avatar in a video game or on a website, so that it looks like one of my characters. You can then send an image to that same e-mail with the subject "Generated Fan Art Contest" EVERYONE who submits a valid entry will get some art in return; the Traditional category winner will decide my next desktop wallpaper, the Generated category winner gets a filler based on their art, and all runners-up will get a surprise sketch! You can check out the FULL rules on my website at http://www.theheroesofcrash.com/ContestRulesAnStuffPage.htm for more details. Make sure that you submit your entry by May 19th, and have fun!
  22. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Ken Bailey - creator of The Mighty EnergyGirl and winner of my Birthday Fan Art contest last year - requested that I draw my characters playing with model trains. Belt Boy's gone overboard... or rather, "off the tracks". This one was hard to figure out, partly because I wanted the joke to have a good delivery, and partly because I was considering using a character I have yet to reveal in my comic...! One gag I had planned involved Titanium Maiden schlepping a giant remote control for Belt Boy's giant model train, but then I remembered that most model trains I've seen have control panels; it's CARS that have remotes. Gelatin Boy and Cannon struck me as the two cast members most likely to play with model trains; GB's the kind of geek who would have fun, nerdy hobbies, while it's been established that Cannon was fascinated by Belt Boy's gadgets from a young age. If you like this picture, you can make it your own desktop wallpaper! Just go to my main page and click on the Downloadables button to see all the wallpapers I have available! Hmm... this reminds me... isn't it time for THIS year's fan art contest to start soon...?
  23. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Belt Boy goes from feeling down to feeling the love. I know it’s a bit sappy, but gosh darn it, I’m a romantic sap at heart. Besides, these two make for an adorable couple! It’s fun doing “mood backgrounds” like I did for panels 2 and 4 here. I find that I’m doing them a bit more often, and I like how it breaks the monotony a bit. I also like that I’m taking a moment to slow things down and let Belt Boy and Titanium Maiden show that they have chemistry; there will be more of that to come, soon enough! Not much to say from the technical side of things, ‘cept that I posted today’s strip a few hours earlier than usual. I’m visiting my sister in NYC this weekend! Should be loads of fun! See you guys later!
  24. 1/12/19 - All for Knot

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Necros has escaped, but at least someone's getting the PUNishment he deserves...! Looks like Belt Boy was about to get the last lick in, but Necros pulled a "Ninja Vanish". Longtime fans and archive-bingers may remember that Necros used that smoke bomb to escape from his first encounter with heroes of C.R.A.S.H. (Yay! Title drop!). The first panel was the most fun to draw, and my favorite in this week's strip. A simple pose, but still dramatic. Belt Boy's patented Wrapper Ropes of Righteousness were easy to sketch; I used different thicknesses of pencil tools, gradually growing larger and larger, to make sure that the thickness of the ropes were consistent. My least favorite panel to draw was that last one; Unk is a pretty big character for such a small panel, and drawing him turning at the waist proved a challenge. I was originally only going to have Unk and Jackknife in the panel, but I felt as though it looked too empty. I was going to add in Sugar Rush, but I decided Gelatin Boy deserved a laugh (or at least a stifled chuckle) at Jackknife's expense. Adding the three of them to panel 2 in silhouette form was also a last-minute choice to fill up some empty space.
  25. http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Necros gets a taste of his own medicine as our heroes fight him together! He may be tough, but he's outnumbered, and he's left them an opening. But will that be enough to take him down? Stay tuned, faithful readers! Instead of traditional onomatopoeia as sound effects for each attack, I opted to name each attack instead, kind of like the text that pops up in Fairly Oddparents cartoons (which is appropriate, as the show did inspire my comic... even if Hartman seems to have gone a bit off the deep end since then). I had fun playing with the lettering; it was less like writing and more like drawing, with each "font" drawing inspiration from the attacking hero or the attack itself Dino-Mo's "Tail Slam" has pointy letters, reminiscent of a bent dinosaur tail; the letters and background have reptilian-inspired colors. "Dodgeball Barrage" is written on dodgeballs with a yellow background, evoking Dodge's color scheme. Enticia has muted pinks and elegant letters (almost rose-colored, like her civilian namesake) for her "Platform Kick"; more blacks and grays to match her shoes wouldn't contrast with her and Necros well enough. "Cannon Fire" is quick and to the point, with no frills, like Cannon himself and his rapid-fire blasts, with (what else?) a green and purple color scheme. Sugar Rush's volley of "Fury Punches" are accompanied by fist-shaped letters, with muted reds to stand apart a little from her bright red gloves. Jackknife's "Scythe Slash" has letters as pointy as his weapon and green as his outfit, plus they arc in the direction of his attack. Unk's "UNK-ppercut" highlights the awful play on words, which admittedly says more about my style than his, but at least keeps his color scheme. I was initially going to have Unk put the squeeze on Necros again, but I wanted to add a different attack to his repertoire. I also didn't want to have too much of Unk show up in the panel; it would break up the pattern of each panel focusing on Necros and the attack itself. And finally, Titanium Maiden's "Titanium Clothesline" has metal lettering (suggesting titanium, of course), which contrasts nicely with her signature shade of pink in the background. That's a total of eight attacks; the only characters who aren't attacking in this strip are Gelatin Boy (Whose sweat already helped in the previous strip, and who lacks any actual "attacks" anyway) and Belt Boy. Whether or not he plans to take any action remains to be seen, for now...! By the way, I'm always happy to hear feedback from my readers; which panel was your favorite in today's strip? Leave me a comment! I also appreciate it when you share my comic, so please share this post!
